I feel like Citizen is the Lexus of watches, a premium brand with better reliability than literally any other manufacturer.

@@profound369 I don't know where you are but In the UK they sell lots of other brands at most watch stores like Seiko, Tag Heur, Casio, Lorus, Swatch and usually a few others too.

Citizen is a reliable watches with reasonable prices.

Actually, as a citizen watch owner and small collection owner, mainly of citizen watches, I find it really annoying that the myth about the eco drive system not needing a new battery (capacitor) is being perpetuated by people like you. Yes, it does!! It is a rechargable battery, but still a battery and subject to failure. However, these rechargable batteries last for at least 20 years as opposed to non rechargeable batteries. They also cost a lot more. I have one of the first citizen skyhawk watches, which is now some 25 to 30 years old and I have only recently had a new capacitor fitted. Being radio controlled it is accurate to about 1sec. a day and water resistant to 200m without any tiresome screw down crown. It has a multitude of other features (complications) as well and cost me £350 all those years ago. If you want to pay many thousands of pounds/dollars, what have you, for a lesser useful watch then you've got too much money. If you want a piece of jewelry then go out and buy yourself a few diamond encrusted bangles, rings and ear rings, ducky! Yeah, I know what you're thinking. I'm jealous and you're right, I am, but I'd still put a citizen eco drive, radio controlled watch on my wrist. Wear it and forget it, until you want to know the time or day or month or year.

​@@polong99perhaps for your lifestyle, picture a factory worker that needs to know time but isn't allowed a phone on the factory floor for safety reasons. Or a individual participating in a mud run. Imagine a rifleman on patrol checking time for small unit coordination. These are just three of potentially endless examples where lifestyle requires accurate and durable time keeping where a phone isn't optional where a quartz watch is required.

Watch is faster

I wear a watvh as assessory with a function. Well made automatic gives me a smile when I look at them . If i am not wearing automatic. I go for the casio F91. Looks retro and easier to wear than all Quatz wstches. Quartz are so bland for me.

I have a casio wave cepter as well. Hard to fault it. I like the way the seconds hand is in sync. with my citizen radio controlled watches. I can't discern any lag at all between them. It's quite enjoyable to watch!

I'd argue the differences in timekeeping ability are almost irrelevant in a time where everyone has a smartphone that's linked to an atomic clock. Adjust your crappy Vostok/Seiko/China watch once a week, and they are more than precise enough for all intents and purposes.

Grand Seiko makes a high accuracy hand-made quartz movement with the same craftsmanship they put into their mechanicals. Servicable, while accurate to within 10 seconds a year, more EMF resistant and tougher than any mechanical, with hand-polishing that beats the polishing on a Rolex, it's truly the best of both worlds. Sure, it's pricey for a quartz, but still less than their mechanicals.

You need a better understanding of how an escapement works. When the pallet fork jewels lock (i.e. your erroneous hand brake analogy) the escape wheel, ZERO energy is being used or "wasted".

Justin C Hsu I agree with the quartz comment about being high end. There is really high end quartz Movement from Seiko and grand Seiko that would knock the socks off of nearly anything. And honestly, I’m considering the Spring Drive Grand Seiko in the future. And that pro master diver is amazing, I’m taking it to Hawaii in a month and I’m gonna be doing some free diving

IMHO citizen dive watches are just as good if not better quality than Seiko dive watches. I honestly see Citizen as the revolutionaries that Seiko was when they came out with the quartz watches.

I keep hearing about Citizen Eco-Drive. I tried looking for one that looks decent and is sized for normal humans and couldn't find one. Believe me, I've looked... Or maybe you're referring to their dive watches, which are probably ok, but dive watches aren't my style.

The Grand Seiko Dive watch is available in both an automatic and spring drive movement. Both movements are hand made in Japan by master watchmakers. The automatic movement ranks with some of the best swiss in-house movements. The spring drive is unique, but I think the automatic movement version is a better fit for the unique requirements of diving in remote areas.

Just a curiosity question. What is the Movado purchased before the grand Seiko?

@allthingsrandom8137 Kind of concurrently. The grand Seiko is a very limited edition. There were only 100 of them that were made. While waiting for it to be shipped from Germany, which is where I found it, I was bored and one day I saw that Movado. I thought it was cool so I bought it. I'm an emergency physician and I wear scrubs to work. It looks good with the scrubs, has a chronograph which is helpful and people actually compliment it. I'm definitely not going to be wearing my sbgy026 to the ER.

Best part is, the Japanese even made mechanicals so much more affordable. No, my Seiko Turtle doesn't have the finesse of my Omega GMT, but, the Omega cost me literally 15 times as much but isn't even twice the watch. I'll not part with either, though.

You only have to unscrew the case back to replace the battery. Also, don't be fooled into thinking that a mechanical watch will work forever. They require servicing every 5-7 years.

There is a snobbery when it comes to quartz watches, I will admit that. I’ve been looking at the grand Seiko GMT quartz, and though the mechanics are extremely fine. But I know the quality behind it, so I’m probably going to get it anyway.

The ramen I'm having for lunch right now will be powering the automatic watch I'm wearing soon enough. LOL

I’m no snob regarding quartz watches. I just don’t like the jerky ticking of the seconds hand on quartz. Time is fluid and flowing. I do own a Bulova Precisionist quartz which has a smoother sweep than any mechanical I’m aware of. Too bad they haven’t used this movement in more stylish watches. My (2) favorite quartz watches are my Casio MRW200 H at $20 and my Citizen Promaster solar diver.

"More accurate yes, better NO!" A watch tells time. That's it's most basic function. By default, the more accurate one is better. In this case quartz. Quartz also give more 'satisfaction' as they don't need baby sitting in keeping them in time or keeping them wound. Quartz just works. Quartz watches are generally lighter in weight and thinner, so more comfortable. The only people who deny that are watch collectors who call themselves "horologists". People bring up battery changes like spending 10-15 minutes every few years is exhausting.

I actually LIKE the fact that mechanicals are heavier, and I LIKE the daily hand winding and weekly synching the watch to the atomic clock. I really fu**ing LIKE doing these things!! For me all this is not a chore, it's a pleasure! For me, 5 seconds a day is all I NEED in terms of accuracy, I don't need 5 seconds a month because I synch my watch every week so it's always accurate!! You just don't get it, do you? I'm saying they are, by the basis that there isn't a single thing mechanicals are better at than quartz. It's simple fact. If you love mechanical watches, that's fine. But don't get overly defensive with the facts. I have mechanicals also, one that I've modded (bead blasted, domed sapphire, movement upgrade), but even with all that I still won't say that its better than my AWG-M100. The Casio is better in every (technical) way, it's just not a very flexible watch stylistically. However, at least we can both agree that smart watches are pretty lame.

accurate is purpose of time

Collecting mechanical watches is like collecting cassette tapes and vinyl records, while vinyl records actually have a legitimate excuse for sound quality. The Quartz Crisis during the late 70's to early 80's gutted the Swiss watch making industry and the only companies that survived rebranded themselves as luxury brands appealing to a small niche group of hobbyists. Ever since phones started telling time, watches have become relegated to functional piece of jewelry.

Who "serviced" your gshock? Your mechanical will require service too and it will cost a lot more.

I have just bought a Casio "Royale" AKA Casio AE-1200WH in silver for just £30 GBP at Argos ... For the money, it was a steal.. It looks a lot more expensive than what it cost.

First, it is strange that it gains only 5 seconds a day. Usually mechanical watches are less precise unless they are chronometers (Rolex sheeple and fanboys lie through their teeth; I mean your watch is as precise as a Rolex that often has precision problems--reality check--not from salivating Rolex fans who often buy fakes). Other than that I completely agree with you. Good points. I also prefer quartz watches. I got a Longines and Raymond Weil. One of them is 30 years old now. I wore it a lot and even abused it. Well, it still looks well and runs like new. I absolutely trust it. People think it is a gold watch but I keep explaining it to them that when you buy a more expensive watch, gold plating will last, like, your lifetime along with the watch! *Mechanical watches last only around 10 years. It doesn't matter if it is a 100 dollar mechanical watch or a 20 grand one.* They will break down even if you service them every 4 years. They are too fragile with too many components. Most mechanical watches don't keep precise time. And automatic mechanical watches will stop out of the blue unless you use a winder overnight. I even was late once because of that. It doesn't matter if it is a 100 or 50,000 dollar watch. It's not gonna be reliable without an overnight winder or a power reserve indicator. You can also get a manual wind watch. These are very rare but Patek and Vacheron offers such watches. Last but not least, I would trust a Casio G-Shock even more. It doesn't even have movements inside. There's nothing to break! Of course, the display (the liquid crystals) may start to falter over like 20 years but it's not like your watch is gonna stop or show wrong time. It's more like letters and digits might start to show deterioration. You still will be able to tell the precise time. Bottom line: mechanical watches last like 10 years but you can keep repairing any watch for eternity! It doesn't mean it is reliable. It means you can repair anything. You can also restore quartz watches. Never had to do that though while I had some bad experience when a mechanical watch failed so much so that you can either buy a new one or go through extensive repairs. My 30 year old quartz watch never had such problems. My brother has a quartz gold watch which is also 30 years old. It works just like new. There you go, folks. I also have a Casio too. It's like new too although it is, like, 10 years old. I was going easy on it so as not to scratch the plastic, and I rarely wore it as it is a bit big and thick. Yeah, it's all plastic (with a bit of steel) but I love it! And it is very cheap: less than 100 bucks!!! I sometimes wear my Casio and I love it just like I love my quartz Longines. It's just a bit big and thick.

One more thing: It is lies from fools and snobs who say that one day the battery will suddenly go flat and your quartz watch won't show you the time. Before going flat, the second hand starts to move in 5 seconds increments instead of 1 second increment. You will have a couple of weeks to replace it and you can do it anywhere. The quartz watch will still show the correct time. This holds for watches that are at least 100 dollars or more. As to an automatic watch, it will suddenly stop or show you very, very incorrect time (it will happen from time to time) unless you use an overnight winder or wind your watch every day. In the latter case you will damage the winding system in a few years' time or sooner!!! Why? That's because you never know how much power reserve you have on your automatic watches. I find it horrible. As to replacing batteries, it's usually once in three years! Some Casio watches last as long as 10 years as they have very large batteries inside!!!

A mechanical clock will always have something that Quartz clocks haven’t : A soul. I mean if you die, your clocks are yoing to stop too, they are linked to you. While quartz just keep working. So yeah, they’re cheaper and more accurate, so for most people who want a basic watch, they’re great but when you buy a mechanical watch (or better, receive one from a family member), you sort of have that very intimate relationship with it. I received a mechanical watch from my grandpa and making this watch live by wearing is a very special feeling that you’ll never have with a quartz watch, or at least not in the same way. So the shole charm with mechanical clocks in general is that YOU give them life.
