WATCH CHRONICLER

5 жыл бұрын

In today's video, I would like to discuss 5 remarkable quartz watches which exploit this technology to provide remarkable feats of accuracy, innovation and watchmaking. These pieces provide a counterargument to the view that quartz watches are of inherently lesser quality than mechanical pieces.
Featured Watches:
- Longines Conquest V.H.P.
- Sinn UX
- Citizen Eco-Drive One
- Grand Seiko 9F
- F.P. Journe Élégante 48

i realy like quartz movements.. im almost allways wears one of my quartz or my digitalwatch.. i like the the no hassle approach of my quartzes. i like mechanical movements, the craftmansship is great.. but i like the accuracy of my quartzes - and also, on my work, there are a lot of electro-magnetic fields, so a quartz is a better choice for me

Nice video. Subscribed :) High end quartz really deserves some attention. Another quartz piece that deserves some extra attention (because it isn't really getting any), is the Citizen Chronomaster. It has finishing competing with that of the 9F Grand Seikos. The new movement they'll probably put in it this year, is rated at +-1s/year, and is solar driven. It needs to be solar driven, because no battery would hold up long enough with the frequency the oscilator runs at. Quite possibly the king of quartz watches. It has been a JDM release till now though, so that explains some of why it has been so absent in the online watch community.

I have the Longines VHP GMT, it has gained one second in nearly 18 months and the time/date is set using an app on my phone, therefore the perpetual calendar can be set to anywhere in the world and takes into account daylight saving. Love it!!!!! I an not a watch snob, l like quartz (grab-and-go) and autos , but must say the accuracy of well regulated automatic movements these days is very impressive.

I'm a mechanical watch lover, but I also see the benefit of having at least one quartz in the collection. I picked up a "like new" quartz Omega Seamaster SMP (the Bond watch from Goldeneye) and I absolutely love it. It has become my daily watch due to the fact that I can be pretty rough on my watches at times and find myself around magnetic fields. No issues so far and its keeping excellent accuracy (it's running about 3 seconds off in the last ~4 months, which is much better than listed accuracy). Again, I love my mechanical pieces and agree there is a bond that forms with them in a different way, but that doesnt diminish my love for my Seamaster.

I'll also add that I pay much more attention to the case finishing, bracelet construction, and dial. I know some put the movement first, but it's an afterthought to me. I still prefer mechanical, but if the case/bracelet/dial are up to a luxury standard I can certainly overlook the fact that its quartz. I also had a Tag Heuer Aquaracer quartz for a while but sold it about a year ago. It was an excellent timepiece for what I paid (around $700 on the secondhand market).

Rightfully so Armand! Quartz is not the ugly stepmother of the watch industry, but is as valuable as other time pieces. We are allowed to evolve beyond mechanical watches, if what we get is anything like the smashing beautifull F.P. Journe... This goes to show that not only beautifull watches can be the result of this, with haut horlogery finishings, but also interesting, usefull and practical technologies that I would wear proudly. Grand Seiko also deserves a lot of respect for raising the bar in quartz movements. I wonder if we see other brands follow suit...? Bravery vs proudness

If you want a watch that can wear up to 10 years with good looking, for dress up or down, formal or casual and absolutely without service or replace the new battery...the answer is Citizen eco drive aw1430-86a, 100m water resistant with date display , +5-7sec/a month, and under $150.

We can agree about the quartz greatness and it and these watches can and are, however we are micro-machinist so making watch movement and watch sized parts is our thing so this is why mechanical movements are the our Thing at this House. Quartz is practicall and technically amazing. But somehow I can't develop a sentiment towards them or a sense of companionship. They can go on without me because of the battery. But mechanical watches work only under my influence, because of me if you will. I gues I want a watch which is also my pet. You have to feed it with energy and take care of it. You have to think about it and maintain it's accuracy. It's imperfect and that somehow gives it life. The other thing is what I call "what if zombies ?" Mechanical will have no problem with them. Quartz needs new batteries, stops and in some convoluted way contributes to my brain being a meal. Solar watches and stuff like Seiko Kinetic kind of mitigate that so this argument is only half right. If only Sinn UX was solar... that would be "shut up and take my money". A man can dream...

Having owned a Grand Seiko 9F quartz watch I can attest to it's remarkable accuracy. Although I'm very much a mechanical watch lover I can also appreciate having at least one quartz watch in a collection. Something I just saw on Worn and Wound is Quartz Chronograph by Farer that has a split second as well as a fly-back feature. I've not seen both these functions on a chronograph before either in a quartz or mechanical movement. Pretty impressive!

Great video Armand I really like your take on quartz throughout. It definitely has its merits and I set my mechanical pieces to a Seiko Solar as it’s so accurate. My pick would be the Grand Seiko’s as everything about them screams quality, plus at this price point, having a great mechanical horoligicaly fabulous watch is not is not so good if it does not keep accurate time is it? A great many do not unfortunately which is why a GS is very high on my list of attainable grails.

There's quartz and there's quartz. The high end quartz are well worth wearing because they bring certain advantages such as accuracy, ease of servicing, cheaper to buy and service, great everyday watches. I've learnt, after acquiring my favourite mechanicals, to appreciate aspects of quartz. What did it for me was my Seiko Flightmaster and a covid lockdown purchase of the Bulova Moonwatch.....I love them... I'm now looking at a Longine...and hopefully call it a day after that 😂

Interesting video and well done for raising the quartz question. IMO and from experience if people want a serious sports or dive watch (ie: one that is going to be uses as such) you're far better off with a high torque and compensated quartz movement. Keep those beautiful but fragile mechanical movements for "desk divers".

My general issue with quartz watches (and I have owned, and still own many) is that they are inherently disposable. If the LCD on your Casio breaks, do you go through the trouble of finding a competent watch repairer that can source a new LCD screen and replace it? Or do you just fork over $10 for a new watch? What if it's a $1000 steel G-Shock? What if the problem is more complicated than simple replacement, maybe the circuit board on the watch shorted out. Would it even be possible to repair? Were they ever meant to be repaired? How many watchmakers can fabricate their own silicone IC components to fix your vintage quartz movement? Don't get me wrong, I respect quartz. As a practical, cost effective tool that will have uses superior to any mechanical watch you can afford (I had one that can time up to 10 separate lap times and it's not a GPS watch, what?!). But once it breaks, outside of battery replacement, it goes in the wastebasket. And that will affect how I perceive value in quartz watches. In my own experience with Casio watches, I haven't had any last more than 4 years before becoming permanently broken. Considering their cost, I think it's rather great that they last that long. But I would think twice spending $100 or more on a watch that can't be fixed. Grand Seiko I think does quartz right, the 9F series of movements being designed to be repairable/serviceable in the way that mechanical watches inherently are (i say inherent because there doesn't appear to be any watch/clock that, with skill effort and proper resources, can't be fixed). Though it still ultimately isn't either but I'll just assume Seiko will be around forever. In the complete other direction, Sistem 51 by Swatch is novel, being the first mechanical watch produced without human hands. Downside is that no one can fix these besides Swatch, so once your warranty is out, it might as well go in the trash.

I liked your oxymorons of “enormously thin” and “immensely thin” for the Citizen. In the 80s I had a Gucci quartz that was “hugely thin” and a Seiko classic rectangular watch 5Y30-5060 reference that at 5.49mm was only “largely thin.” I wonder what’s the thickness in micrometers of “preposterously thin?” Actually I was wondering if anyone had ever made a watch so small that it had a cyclops over the entire dial? I guess it would look something like the Movado bubble watch my mother had in the 70s!

I wonder why the Swiss don't do solar powered quartz. It's so much better than normal quartz IMO. It is because they think it won't sell, because they aren't capable, or because they don't take quartz seriously? I'm guessing it's a combination of all those things, but mostly the last one. I might be uninformed, but the only swiss solar quartz I've seen is more of a smart-watch, the Tissot T-touch.

I have mainly quartz watches around 500€ (plus a few automatics) but I will never get it : how can you justify selling a quartz watch for more than 1000€? The quality and development of an in house movement justifies the high price but for a quartz watch the movement is extremely simple. This makes no sense to me.

There's only one high-end quartz worth owning, which im amazed is missing from this list, but the Rolex Oysterquartz. The movement took quartz to a new level with the Rolex quality build and the only integrated bracelet with genta style case. Absolute masterpiece. Check out the white gold Rolex 5100, its epic.

It's amusing as I grew up with electro-mechanical and quartz watches. Mechanicals are alien to me. I let the mech folks carry that flag. I really admire the F.P.Journe...

At the start of the video, the presenter makes a huge sweeping, and inaccurate statement - he states that quartz movements are made to a lesser quality than mechanical movements - which is rubbish. Both types can be produced to a greater or lesser quality, depending on many factors. I think it's fair to say that a high end mechanical movement will have more direct human influence in its manufacture then the "equivalent" high end quartz movement.....but this in of itself has no bearing on quality.

Came into the comment section to look for this comment The fact that the Swiss has managed to brainwash the world to equate mechanical movements to higher quality is quite fascinating really

If a watch is off by more than one second per day, it is seriously defective and should be tossed in the trash. OK, I’ll compromise a little. If it has a real pretty face I’ll let two seconds a day slide. Too harsh? - - - I obviously do not feel that way, since I would have thrown away all my mechanical watches. When I hear some mechanical watch snob make ridiculous statements about quartz watches, I wonder if they feel the same about other devices. Do they only use mechanical calculators? Rotary phones? Do they bother setting the correct time on their watches or do they figure that if they are ticking, that is close enough? Or if they do set their mechanical watches, to what time are they setting them? The snobs that disparage quartz watches and their owners come across as narrow-minded buffoons.

It is a no brainer. Quartz of course is preferable. I do get the mechanical - in fact I have a mechanical (Seiko SARK 055). I also own three fountain pens, but no manual motor vehicles. I also own a valve pre-amplifier - gorgeous! Time to move on guys.
