@escapiststupor: Thank you for uploading this. The official website of the Queen Elisabeth Competition is a monstrosity! I remember watching this (on screen) when it was performed, and, I think every connoisseur and non-connoisseur (the latter if watching) knew "This is it!". It's only a competition, but he transformed his performance in a transcendental experience. You can also notice the orchestra, lead by the truly great Marin Alsop, is thoroughly enjoying the music. Just check some of the performers while playing: their relaxed body, dreamy eyes while performing! He was the "winner", but that didn't matter anymore. For the Belgian and Dutch fans: he's coming to Antwerp, Queen Elisabeth, playing Rach III, 2/2/2020!

hahahaha what a joke. The version of Giltburg was miles better. Vondracek only did his own interpretation which is very unintelligible for these orchestra. He only played some unrhythmic notes. Further he forced himself to play as loud as possible... I can't stand listening this all the time because I lost my focus for continuing listening.

@@benediktschlegel8233 In my opinion music is still very subjective. the fact that YOU don`t like the artistic freedom that is displayed in this performance does not mean it is played badly, it just means that YOU don`t like this performance. It is a fact that a lot of people (Including a couple of people in the orchestra which I know) like this performance a lot. another fact is that he won the competition, and I don`t know you so I can not say a thing about your knowledge about playing the piano in general, but I guess that the judges are more then competent to judge if he was the correct winner of the competition. Please let it go: instead of bragging about this performance, look for one that suites you and enjoy it...

@@koenbaens1428 that is a real joke. Maybe only some people of the orchestra liked these performance. I think the first horn player wasn't happy at all when Mr. Vondracek runned away in the beginning of that masterpiece. A competition and classical music in general is always a hard world. @@benediktschlegel8233 There is a difference in `I think` and `I know`. I know for a fact that a lot of people from the orchestra liked the performance, and you think dat the first horn player wasn`t happy, there is the difference: as long als you don`t ask the horn player, your statement is pure guessing and has no value at all. Next to that let me ask you a question: are you an active musician playing in a group on high level, playing with soloists? because i have the feeling that you have no idea what cohesion means in the context of a soloist. in my opinion (an the opinion from a lot of critics that where talking about this competition) something magical happens between the orchestra and the soloist. he might be coloring outside of the lines, but the orchestra is evenly expressive as he is at times. Let me be clear here, I am not trying to convince you that you should like this concerto. I just want you to understand why music is subjective and why a lot of people like this version. In the end there is only one thing that matters: DO YOU LIKE TO LISTEN TO IT? if not, move on look for other music that suits you...

In my opinion, Rachmaninoff would have been horrified by this performance, as I am. Rachmaninoff preferred his music to be played with emotional detachment. Vondráček is overly sentimental with this music, overly emotional. Just do some research on the performance philosophy of Rachmaninoff, and you will find that I am correct about this. When Rachmaninoff is over-sentimentalized the result is gushiness, which ruins the melodic line and destroys the overall architecture of the work in question. That is exactly what is happening in this performance. I don't mind pianists who take a new approach to this work. The problem is that *this* approach is in direct contradiction to the known performance preferences of the composer himself.

For me not good at all musically. I hear a lot of stupid and noisy accents. Further I hear a lot of irregularities and stupid tempo changes which results in bad a coordination with the orchestra. The main theme in the beginning of this piece has been the most important one. I don't recognise these theme in other places of the whole piece. It has no sense to listen the whole concerto if you aren't able to play the main theme rhythmically. It's very difficult to focus on listening when some phrases left the musical phases. Mr. Vondracek played too much for himself. Beautiful example is the main theme played by the horn in the beginning. The horn player had difficulties to play that theme because Vondracek was running away.

I disagree, Lukas put a whole new view on this concerto, mainly because of new tempo's. And ultimately I feel it makes a lot of sense. Did you know that the orchestra itself marked this concerto as a 'special' one? It's true they needed to keep up with Lukas but they also claimed there was a sort of energy coming from him and the piano that made them feel lifted and energetic.
