This guy is Spike Edney. He replaced Fred Mandel as a supporting keyboardist in Queen's live performances, but ended up becoming a frequent musician in other works related to the group's members. Spike was part of The Cross - a parallel band formed by Roger Taylor, where the drummer took on lead vocals -, in addition to accompanying Roger and Brian's solo shows. Edney is still the band's keyboardist to this day, having performed alongside Freddie Mercury, Paul Rodger and, currently, Adam Lambert.

He played at Live Aid with them. Piano on Crazy is obvious.

The guy you see is a gentleman by the name of spike edney. He’s sort of like Queens unofficial 5th member in the 80s. Freddie wanted more of a sound and more running around. He also plays with Queen to this day as Queen + Adam lambert. Also hammer to fall is much better at wembley live from the same tour in 86

Brian May's response to all the synth driven tunes. This was a welcome return to the rock realm for many of us. The backing vocal harmonies and guitar rhythms are nice.

Brian May wrote this one and I love the heavier rock feel of it. That would be Spike Edney, a multi-instrumentalist who was often referred to as the 5th member of Queen. When Freddie wanted to stay up front more and spend less time on piano, Queen hired someone to fill in.

Spike Edney also plays piano on stage occasionally. Hammer to Fall, written by Brian, is a song about the inevitability of death. Because of the mention of the "mushroom cloud" it has been misinterpreted to be about the Soviet Union and the missile race. Looking forward to the next one!😊

Spike's parked firmly on the piano bench in some songs (like the rock n' roll medley). Freddie scoots him over. John bangs on the piano keys with him. A good time had by all. He still tours with Queen +Adam Lambert.

I was 17 when this song hit and it’s from The Works Album right after the Hot Space album. This is when they turned the corner and started returning to their rock roots and classic Queen sound.

Hammer to Fall is heard playing on a car radio in a scene from Highlander. The songs Queen specifically wrote for the movie are on their A Kind of Magic album.

Hammer to Fall was hell for Freddie to sing in 1986. It's on this song you really can tell that his vocals isnt like in '81 for example.

This version is not that great, but the Wembley version is actually very good. Male voices change, they are only fully formed at the age of 40. Freddie was a heavy voiced tenor, his voice gained more and more weight over time. His passaggio changed, and became lower. He just had to learn to use his voice slightly differently, but he did not really have to time. And as he became sicker his voice lost power and weight again, so it didn't matter for him in the end.

The fifth person on stage is Philip (Spike) Edney who played keyboards and rhythm guitar. Spike toured with Queen in 1984 because Freddie preferred to perform in front of the band instead of playing the piano.

I think I read that Montreal 81 was the last time they played live as a four piece. After that Spike Edney became the fifth member usually playing keyboards but occasionally guitar which you see here.

A Kind of Magic album was an "unofficial" soundtrack to the movie Highlander--6 of the 9 tracks were featured in the movie.

Probably one of my favorite tracks from The Works album. I think on the Works tour and thereafter they had an additional touring musician.

D in not a natural key for Freddie to sing in. Apparently he often complained to Brian whenever he brought in a rocker in D to the studio.

Love Hammer To Fall .. the studio version is great with crisp & powerful vocals by Freddie! The song regained some popularity when it was featured in the pop cult series “Stranger Things Season 2: The Spy” ⚒️ Brian states the song is about the Grimm Reaper’s Death Hammer, kinda tongue-in-cheek! 😁

This was the 4th single from The Works album in the UK. I love it but actually preferred the Live Aid performance. Spike is a very talented musician.
