So many things wrong with this video, including the mispronunciation of SUDANO, but that's okay. The timeline is wacky too, but that's also okay. As for smoking, her sister Jeannette died of lung cancer a few years before Donna, but Jeannette was a smoker. When Donna renewed her faith, she immediately stopped smoking, cold turkey. Smoking is bad for the voice anyway. She didn't like being photographed with a cigarette, but I can think of at least one time while going over the soundtracks for Live and More, Donna had a cigarette in hand, and even said, don't film this. She and her husband Bruce were in Manhattan on 9-11. They had a Fifth Avenue apartment in NY and were there on 9-11 and they were outside while the toxic air was still hovering around. She didn't inhale the gray concrete matter, which we have all seen footage when one of the towers collapsed and people are running and a big cloud is following them and then everything goes dark and the camera operator hides down low next to and possible partially under a parked car, and then you see people coming out of the darkness and they are completely covered in gray concrete dust, thick on their skin and clothes. That is not what happened to Donna. It is possible to be a "smoker", quit, and then years later come down with lung cancer. It is also possible to never have smoked before but exposed to second hand smoke via a relative or co-worker and later have lung cancer. Perhaps Donna believed it was 9-11 lung cancer, because some first responders were physically doing well, until one day, the cancer would make itself known, but it is such an aggressive cancer it would take them pretty quickly once they discovered there was something wrong. One day, Donna told Bruce she didn't feel right, so she went to see a doctor. She was gone in less than a year from that doctor visit, if I am remembering correctly. I do know that she performed LIVE and sang beautifully, but My Mother never smoked, but her Mother did, and my Mom was happy when she got married and moved out of her Mother's cigarette-smelling house. My Mom had a little tiny spot of cancer on one of her lungs. I believe they removed it with surgery and she's been great as far as cancer is concerned. Donna didn't really perform at "clubs" - at least not many and not often. She did tours. A lot of places have made theaters non-smoking, except in places where there are casinos, like Las Vegas, and people can walk around in a casino with a cigarette in one hand and a cocktail in the other. I remember very distinctly for one show, Donna told the audience that she can't ask them to not smoke, but if they chose not to, it would be appreciated for those who are seated right up against the stage, so close. She said that with the spotlights on that it makes the air dry on stage and if on top of that, smoking also dries out the air and it's hard on her voice. She reiterated that she isn't asking them not to smoke, she is simply saying the air on stage is dry, but I am not asking you not to smoke... Contractually, she couldn't ask people close to the stage NOT to smoke, but she could explain about the heat from the spotlights and then dry cigggy smoke... I didn't see anyone smoking anywhere in that theater, which doesn't mean people further from stage didn't smoke. I was at a table right next to the stage. Out of respect for her, the artist, the diva, the goddess with the strongest voice in the business (she could drown out anyone without much effort, if she chose to) So, it is impossible to know, really, how she got this cancer. A medical doctor who did a video said it was not 9-11 cancer, but without her records, he doesn't really know anyway. Because it was so aggressive and she was gone just a few months after her last performance, that suggests to me it could be 9-11 cancer, but I am not a doctor of any kind, so I don't really know either. If it was easier for her believe it was 9-11, then that's okay. She is gone now, so it doesn't matter as much. But, I have to say that my world is a little less bright without her in it. I miss her every day. The saddest part is that, for the rest of my life, I will never hear her sing live and in person again. But, when I die, I believe I will get to hear her sing - it won't be any of her hit songs, but it will be amazing, and her voice will be stronger than ever - so strong it can bend the universe. If only we could get her to bend the universe to help scientists create warp drives. Donna Summer's voice engaged, Warp Engines online and awaiting the order, Captain. Engage.
