Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden Limestone Plants Tour - Plant One On Me - Ep 135

4 жыл бұрынWe depart the Chatuchak Plant market in Bangkok, Thailand (Ep 133 and 134) and head to the Chiang Mai area in Northern Thailand to meet up with Dr. Piyakaset at the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden, a relatively new botanic garden that abuts a national forest and boasts a fine collection of native Thai plants from all over the country.
The main focus of this video, however, are the rare limestone plants in their Research Display Greenhouse, which isn't open to the public. This will give most viewers a firsthand look at around 70 plants that you may not typically see anywhere else.

Another great botanical garden tour with super knowledgable expert! I just want to shout out to Dr. Piyakaset for not just his expertise, for people from the USA and Europe, all these Latin names is a step up of your native language, but for us people speaking a set of completely different languages, for Dr. Piyakaset to be able to call these many Latin names really shows the depth of his passion and understanding over plants! And he just seems like a genuine nice and friendly person!

I love the segment in the limestone garden, demonstrating that there are many variations in orchid culture and blooming behaviors, not everything is by the book. Amazing how he has described some of the species.

This is practically a full documentary! Dr Piyakaset is a credit to the QSBG! His passion and knowledge...and so happy to see you have someone that talks to you with so much passion on plants! I live in the tropics but I never quite treasure the biodiversity and blessed greenery I hv around me until I watched your videos. I still struggle with keeping my plants alive but at least now I know there's a way....

Oh! the name of Dr. Piyakaset means to be the way he do . Love (= Piya) with Agriculture (= Kaset ) . Interesting name. ( I'm Thai ^ ^ )

Would you mind if I would correct you just a little bit? The word, Piya actually means beloved not love. For example Piya Maharaj = the beloved great king.

Kleinia, Stephania, Dischidia, Tacca, Ficus, ginger, fascinating Agapetes species, Euphorbias, Hoyas, Peperomias, Begonias, orchids, tons of caudices, ferns, mosses, liverworts and Impatiens galore. And the millipedes! It's like heaven! I'm skeptical the next installment in the series will match or exceed this tour. Dr. Piyakaset is an excellent tour guide and very pleasant to listen to. Hey summer , this tour was definitely a watch ..if you're into rare endemic regions then why not come someday to North East India here? we are totally different from the rest of India in terms of climatic conditions and people! owing to the Himalayan range acting as a rain catcher for us here leading to the wettest place in the world. here we have the 7th highst biodiversity in the world too! As always, loving what you're doing!

@@summerrayneoakes Great! You're totally welcome! You'll love the exotics in the world's largest river island here in NE, named Majuli..it's a lush lush place! There's this German woman who came like years ago as a tourist to Majuli and she totally fell in love with it. And now 7 years later she's a resident of Majuli. 😂😂😂couldn't get over the nature here. Mawllynlong with it's rain and the cloud forests with cliffs draped in ferns alone that you go though on your way to Dawki as you see ...there's so much to see!

It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to follow along as Dr. Piyakaset reveals a cornucopia of botanical treasures with such pride and enthusiasm. This research facility demonstrates the key role geology plays in phytogeography. ~ I’m going to have lots of fun researching the species and topics discussed herein, starting with Agapetes megacarpa. ~ I’m looking forward to further exploration of Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden with the generous Doctor.

Firstly, I literally cried watching this video. The conservational message is so important, and you convey it so beautifully. Your editing is impeccable. I wish every episode was 45 minutes long... Secondly, may I invite you to Finland? We're quite opposite of tropical here, but with three quarters of the land covered by forests, nature is a huge part of our culture and lives. With old-growth forests, marshland, nearly 190000 lakes with critically endangered endemic fresh water seals, the fells of Lapland; we have a multitude of interesting habitats within our taiga biome, all of which you would find fascinating, I'm sure. Lastly, thank you so much for your hard work.

My globulosa is also the SLOWEST grower. But when seeing it here, you see how prolific it is!

I know she needs much more humidity than she’s getting, and I’ve heard that particular species prefers a temperature drop at night, which I have experimented with. Now maybe I’m thinking I should play with adding limestone. Hmmmm.

hi Summer, this is the 3rd time I have watched this video all the way through, I've fallen in love with so many plants in this video! I would love to have the Peperomia dindygulensis, the Impatiens mirabilis, the Begonia silletensis and the varigated Begonia sp at 34:43. I didn't go to this garden the last time I was in Chiang Mai, but if I ever go back there, I will definitely go to this beautiful garden, thank you for the video.

Now I see this video, I be sad for my country, Myanmar, near neighbors of Thailand, my country has not nature garden this like, we have many species of natural motherhood plants. But no one interesting to keep them. So many motherhood plants outside to track other countries. One day I will found to keep national plants garden. (sorry for my English language)

south florida has lots of areas with limestone outcrops and you can see many plants growing right out of the rocks. i have a ficus bonsai growing on a 16" limestone rock just sitting in a saucer of water. it has multiple trunks with Arial roots and about a 4' canopy. i have had it for over 20 years.

the thai director is so knowledgeable. he couldn't name only a few species out of nearly a hundred throughout the 46 minute tour. amazing!

And I almost forgot... I used to have one of those Cycas species. I got it from Arid Lands Greenhouses years ago. It was easy to grow but really really really slow!

It looks like a world out of fantasy! It's interesting to hear that maybe plants are using limestones for like perch and does not really take nutrients from it. Great respect for this country to create this place.

I thought I'd be skipping through some of it but no I was pretty fascinated by the whole 46 minutes. As an American, I love Thailand, and SEA in general. In fact I was in Chiang Mai on Jan 2020, hiked up the mountains there. It is so beautiful.

Exquisite. The natural look is definitely the way to go. Organized and staged looks are nice but I much prefer the wild and meandering paths.
