Up here in yankeeville, obamaland the winter bee cluster moves up thru the stack like a typewriter and usually leaves the nest bracketed with honey on the outside edges. Thermal mass of the honey helps regulate the temp inside the nest. Usually in fall they pack the bottom box with pollen for next spring. The multi colored pollen frames are neat.

. For that structure you have the hives under for shade, instead of having to move the hives out from under it for the winter, (or removing the shading structure itself) you should build some kind of base that the hives sit atop that is on gliding rollers and be able to just roll the entire batch of hives back and forth from shade to direct sun. I realize that we're talking about a significant amount of weight, but i'm sure there is some method that would make rolling that much weight fairly easy. .....just a thought.
@West_Kagle5 жыл бұрын
. Added thought..... Perhaps make the covering structure the rolling bit. It's much lighter than the combined weight of the hives.

Im in Mississippi and getting my 1st nuc this spring. Im excited and more concerned about raising a healthy strong colony this 2019 and not so worried about honey until maybe 2020 2021. I planted aboit 40 fruit trees over the past 3 years and hope for pollination assistance. Is it ok to have my hives without shade down here
@jonathanswoboda5 жыл бұрын
The cluster will move even if its cold, up in Canada we have really cold weather for weeks. They can move up fairly easily, easier than sideways, heat rises so even if its -20C they can follow the heat up the hive. I tend to run 2 deeps and a medium for this reason.

Well I can appreciate your theory but here is some notable facts from my past winter. 7 of the hives I manage had queen excluders above a single hive body temperatures were in the 20 - 32°f for some time each super had at least 8 frames of honey. End results. All hives survived. Supers were empty by late feburary. I would expect that honey bees feed the same in winter as they would in summer and If there is brood that is where bees will cluster (better term) congregate, the food resources will be delivered to where it is needed. On the second day of 21°f we opened a hive that had a glass panel installed so we could look in from the top, guess what, those bees were a lot more active than we thought they would be.

We have been trying to figure out at the meeting what size is the whole on most cutouts and if so does a smaller hole have it where the guard bees we'll keep the Beatles out and if so should we replicate that on our hives
@628DirtRooster5 жыл бұрын
Those wild hives typically have much smaller entrances than my Langstroth hives. That being said they still have all the same problems with beetles as managed hives. However, in my opinion the larger entrance in a Lang is necessary especially in the summer for ventilation. The feral colonies are usually built in places (walls of houses) where it is much easier to regulate temperatures. A managed bee box has to endure going from blazing sun to cool evenings in 12 hours with only 3/4 inch wood as their protection and feral colonies aren't typically subject to those big changes every day.
@CHARLESBW4535 жыл бұрын

Well I have always been a excluder free advocate, but this season it all went wrong, I built the colony up to three full deeps, beleiving that 2 deeps for the brood, and one me to rob, well the third deep was full of brood when i went to collect, so being a smart ass i added another deep, a month later finding the 4th deep full of brood added a fifth. I am so over this so I went back 2 boxes and reluctantly added an excluder. it was like this with all 5 hives that i have. Keep smiling lol

LOL Sometimes they like to punk us.
@julieenslow59155 жыл бұрын
Great video. Sometimes when you ramble on (on the way to making your point) you drop lots of little nuggets. Now the point of this was amazing - I had no idea they would abandon their queen in winter. It makes no sense as if they survive without a queen they would all die, the colony would not survive. They are winter bees - come spring they are done. They would live only long enough to nurse the new brood the queen produces. No queen, no brood. But your point was so valuable - do not leave queen excluders on in winter! only exception: put on top of the top box as in that arrangement the queen would not be excluded.
@628DirtRooster5 жыл бұрын
In nature they wouldn't abandon the queen but in a managed situation us humans can throw a wrench in the gears some times and cause them to do what they wouldn't normally. :)

Hey Dirt Rooster. I've heard that they bees produce honey faster and more of it during a flow without a excluder. Yet I have also heard that if one does use an excluder, if they place a top entrance on the hive it acts as if there is not excluder and they bees produce more honey and faster during a Flow. Could you share you thoughts on this? Thanks you
@628DirtRooster3 жыл бұрын
They can, in theory, produce a little faster but I don't find a huge difference. There are too many other things that do more to get you to your goal that a bypass entrance. Screened vented tops help significantly in dry climates. Making sure foundations are freshly waxed also makes a huge difference.
