What an entrance. You can't fake it; they took the stage, and they're the best live band there is, - at any juncture in their career.Life ,- and death, - has kept Homme on his toes, and he has not grown complacent, and doesn't take anything for granted.An optimal line up ,with the rhythm section and Dean in support.

@@nateatchison161 Ah, I see the problem here. I didn't exactly mean that, I knew how QOTSA sounded back then. But more that kids these days don't have any good music taste. I thought Nate meant that kids today don't have any good musical taste, therefore, I showed up and disagreed with him. Have a great day, my friend.

Former sorta-neighbor of mine (JHomme & the rest of Kyuss, pre-Scott Reeder on bass). Saw them @ a house party in LA Quinta, CA; they were calling themselves SONS of Kyuss...after going by Katzenjammer before that. I was wearing a ripped up old Samhain t-shirt (I didn't know that much of their music, but the t-shirt was awesome). Out of nowhere, John Garcia (Kyuss vox) yells out: "HEY YOU! IN THE SAMHAIN SHIRT--THIS IS FOR YOU!" the combination of my relative ignorance of Samhain's catalog & the rough treatment the song got (these guys were like 17-19 @ that time) meant I had zero idea what song they played, but it was cool anyway. Scott Reeder ended up running an exotic pet store in Palm Springs for a few years, with his wife. I had about 100 reptiles, so I got all my supplies there, & occasionally Scott cut me a great deal if I took a truly ornery reptile off his hands. Really good people, Scott & his wife. I didn't know Josh like that...was just JHomme-adjacent. They never fail, QOTSA OR JH...never a single BAD album released, ever. This one starts off with the best QOTSA song since Like Clockwork: Obscenery is a frickin' BRILLIANT song with CRUSHING RIFFS @ 1:57 & 3:37-ish. The 1st one comes on the heels of a little string section break, then the riff grabs you by the throat & shoes the shite out of you during rhe entire bridge. I thought I'd end up having Negative Space or Carnavoyeur as my favorites in this album. Nope. I already like Obscenery, Straightjacket Fitting, & the sneaky-great What the People Say better than any of the 3 songs teased out before the official release (the 2 I mentioned as well as Emotion Sickness, of course, which has a crazy-great video). This is such a good album. Was worried that after 7 years they wouldn't have "it" anymore. So glad to be wrong. And all the David Bowie comparisons for JH?? Kinda warranted...JH is just a bit more forceful, sexy, & outstanding as a guitar player & writer of great riffs.

Thanks for the great insight, I enjoyed that. QOTSA are an absolute force, both on record and in a live setting, and they do it with authority and authenticity. Josh has got a great line-up with Troy, Dean, Mikey and Jon Theodore on drums. I enjoyed Joey Castillo’s input but Jon Theodore is also great, and brings an energy.
@ignoblesavage5559 Жыл бұрын
@@scowlerman THANK YOU--i happen to think that JT is a BEAST of a drummer, but with enough class and nuance that he doesn't do the whole Dave Grohl thing where he's bashing away full force almost at all times. i suspect DG demands that his drumming be placed forward in the mix. while i respect his drumming, he doesn't hold a technical candle to guys like JT, Thomas Pridgeon (took JT's place for The Mars Volta), Tomas Haake of Meshuggah, and especially the departed Sean Reinert of CYNIC & the band DEATH (for 1 all-time, genre-shattering, great album--Human). Reinert was at the forefront of technical death metal drumming & infusing lightning fast death metal with jazz time signatures & tempo/...and whose use of ghost notes on cymbals were unheard of in heavy music back then--early 90s). anyway, Jon Theodore absolutely can BLAST away with the heaviest-handed drummers in the world, but he knows when to pull back, use some subtlety so as to give a song real percussive dynamics. perfect for JHomme's writing style, since he loves to give us little easter eggs in his songs, going soft and pretty for awhile before blasting away, like in the opening song OBSCENERY, the riffs after the string section (around 1:38) and around 3:37 when he doubles down on the earlier bridge riffs--and JT accompanies those riffs explosively. gives so much power when he isn't ALWAYS being powerful, you know?
@ignoblesavage5559 Жыл бұрын
@@scowlerman and Mikey Shoes is a BADASS on the bass, even though he's a another multi-instrumentalist--check his work with Mini Mansions--plays everything BUT bass, and also sings really well. and Troy VL has been in lockstep with Josh for so long that it's becoming hard to tell their playing apart. check out the solo on track 2, the one that reminds you of the solo outro from Little Sister? that isn't JH, it's TVL. and Dean is the quiet member off to the side, doing all of JH's piano and other work live b/c JH sure can't play 2 or 3 instruments at once, right? this is just an all-time great band, and i love that even their harshest critics cannot say the words, "QOTSA made a bad record." the scale for rating their albums is different than that of most any other band i can think of. it's like they have to be graded on a curve, but reverse-style, handicapping them like a stud racehorse that has to take on extra weight to give the rest of the field a chance to compete.
