Queens of the Stone Age - Making of Songs For The Deaf
Songs for the Deaf is the third studio album by American rock band Queens of the Stone Age. Released on August 27, 2002, the album features Foo Fighters and former Nirvana member Dave Grohl on drums. Like their other albums, Songs for the Deaf has a large number of guest musicians, a signature of the band's releases. The album garnered critical acclaim, and the band earned its first gold record certification in the United States. One million copies of the album were sold in Europe, earning the band a platinum certification from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) in 2008. Songs for the Deaf is loosely considered a concept album, taking the listener on a drive through the California desert from Los Angeles to Joshua Tree while tuning into radio stations from towns along the way, such as Banning and Chino Hills. This was the last studio album to feature Nick Oliveri on bass.

That wouldnt have been hard as Kurt Cobain wrote all the drum parts for Nevermind, i'm sure Grohl was only involved in 1 or 2 songs from In Utero. (but yeah not including his Foo Fighters stuff, which maybe Hawkins wrote a lot too 'drum parts')

This is definitely one of my favorite records of all time. The greatness of Songs for the Deaf lies in making old and abandoned sounds appear in another light, synthetic and extravagant, combined with the genius of Homme, a perverse soul full of the slow flavor of the desert. The secret to this success was the perception of the melody in the penetrating territory of stoner/rock. What is most striking about Songs for the Deaf is the simple beauty of the songs, psychedelic but also rich in melody.

12:49 the combination of the blacked out faces and I think I lost my headache playing makes these videos look like some kind of found footage edit: the terrifying stilt people too.

@@Not_Andrew_Huberman Kicks in camerawomen faces aside, Josh Homme is actually one of the greatest musicians ands composers of the last 20-something years. He's been making epic music that no one else was all along and anyone who denies this is just straight hating and I'll always tell them to clean out the earwax and go back and have a better second listen. Matter of fact, only musician I might love more than Josh Homme is Prince. There's a reason for that.
@jovanreid6782

@@callumferguson1834 Josh Homme didn't even listen to Black Sabbath though. He gets that style of playing from starting out in Kyuss, a band full of guys influenced by Black Sabbath. Josh Homme himself though was a punk rocker, he knew nothing about Black Sabbath in his formative years. So no, you can't say he's ever blatantly ripping off Black Sabbath, and as far as The Stooges, that's just one of many bands Josh Homme is influenced by. Last time I checked it's quite okay in music to be influenced by your favorite music when learning from the greats and then doing your own thing with it.

I presume that were I to read up on the history of the band, I'd learn more about why Lanegan was almost non-existent in this video? Best lineup the band ever had ... and so brief.

It's reported that Lanegan has been clean for almost 20 years which is around the time of this album or a little after. So he probably wasn't feeling 100%.

I recently just listened to the audiobook of Sing Backwards and Weep, Mark Lanegan's memoir which he narrates himself. . . It pretty much entirely focuses on his life before Queens and his struggles with addiction. Really, really intense. Well worth checking out for any fans of his.
