Haha, he is actually dissing James Cameron. In every interview of those two together Cameron is always poking and dissing Tarantino so he probably doesn't like him so much. Tarantino basicly responded to the question with : "Change my movies to be more like his? Fuck no. It's a big CGI fest and it's one of those hollywood themeparkrides." And he is kind of quoting Scorsese the great artist and director when he talked about big corporate hollywood movies like Marvel.

Even if Tarantino hated Avatar, his nature is such that he wouldn't make his senior director, James Cameron look like a fool infront of the audience by saying something like "it wasn't intellectual enough for me" or something like that. Tarantino has way too much respect for Hollywood and also other film industries in the world. I haven't seen him diss someone, especially a legend of cinema. That's why perhaps a lot of non Bruce Lee fans too were surprised that Tarantino depicted Lee as some kind of a brat in OUATIH.

You completely misinterpreted this short video. Avatar was Tarantino's favorite movie of 2009. He LOVED it. The "Just because he did it in 3D" comment was like a fun jab between friends. Just to lighten the mood. Now if I didn't know any better, I would also have assumed that Tarantino hated it, because of the story and it's so family friendly compared to Cameron's other films. But he didn't.

You gotta respect Cameron 100%. Just a true artist, literally went to sea like any true sailor and cut his anchor and then came back to tell a story with a wealth of experience. Most “artists” today only know the inside of a trailer or studio.

That's not how you engage with people in civil society. Secondly, there's a difference between originality and influence. Cameron lacks both as large portions of his filmography are basically repackaged versions of other films Titanic (Romeo and Juliet), Avatar (Dance with Wolves), Aliens (sequel to Alien), Terminator (stolen from Harlan Ellison). No baby formula for me, but you seem to need some.

James Cameron is one of the few directors that can make CGI movies work and feel immersive. For many directors CGI becomes a tool to help them be lazy and cut cost. Ultimately it doesn't have to be one or the other. Quentin has his way of making films, and he does it really well, his way. And Cameron (or Nolan) has his way, and it works for him.

The hate CG gets is a little overblown. Of course practical is better (except for larger scale things, look at the effects at the beginning of the blob 1988 and then the ones at the climax of the film) but it’s really all about how you mesh them together and Cameron clearly understands that. He could’ve done something easier like filming with wires and having the actors pretending it’s water but that’s not good enough for Cameron. Same thing with mo-cap. Cameron is dedicated enough to revolutionize mo-cap tech not just so it looks pretty but so the actors can actually have range in their performance. Avatar is a movie that you really can’t make in live action so he goes all out and tries to make the best of what he has in a digital realm. I think of all the work his team does to progress the technology all goes to the quality of the film, the mo-cap is a huge step forward for capturing real emotions and instead of doing it with a computer Cameron decides to go with something that will help the actors. The famous George Lucas quote about effects being a tool for storytelling applies more to Cameron than to George since George spent a lot of time re-editing his films to add more unecessary stuff but Cameron’s vfx are all done to service a story.
