Quentin Tarantino tells Joe about his plans to close his cinema career chapter with his tenth and final film - possibly the third Kill Bill movie or Reservoir Dogs 2!

Here’s what will happen: he’ll do 10 films, take some time off, write a couple novels, maybe do a stage play and then down the road he will come up with an idea so great that he won’t be able to resist filming and they will market the crap out of it as “the return of Tarantino.” Mark my words.

Seemed obvious to me that that was what he was referring to. The bride and her daughter have been living their lives for 20 years, then they get thrust back into that life. He can end his career whenever he wants but his point doesn't apply to every director. I don't think that for example Kurosawa's later movies were worse than those that had made him famous. Ran for example is a masterpiece. Kubrick didn't loose any steam either. There were certainly more. Who knows maybe fifteen years later some idea for a movie will itch him so much that he will reconsider. If not, then not.
@thenorsepioneer73112 жыл бұрын
Their is a difference when the films are adapted. Most of Taratino's films have been original and that's harder to maintain because people become accustomed to your voice and style. Ran is based on King Lear and a lot of Kubricks later work was adapted also.

I think the overall pattern is correct, but there are some exceptions to "every artist loses it at some point". On musicians/albums, I mean, 2016 began with Bowie's Blackstar and ended with Cohen's You Want It Darker. Both truly great albums. Both right before they each respectively dropped dead. Were they absolute peak? Maybe not, but they were worthy of their legacies. And both had many decades, rise and fall, so many albums, but showed they each had fuel in the tank at the end.

There are artists that stay at the top of their game and improve into later age, not athletes or Rockstars necessarily but a director like Quentin? He might have a masterpiece or 2 left in him that makes Pulp Fiction look like amateur hour, even as great as it is, I love the old stuff but all his newer stuff is holding up and aging well for me too, I like them more every time I see them. I was thinking of Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood, and even Spielberg -- and how old those filmmakers are while they are still directing movies. But I think the big difference between those guys and Quentin Tarantino is that Quentin write his own original material so the creative juice may not be flowing . I don't blame QT wanting to go out while on top: he's not the type of guy to just direct a movie on someone else's material. But hopefully in 10 years or 15 years, QT might make a comeback. Great filmmaker.

The industry is in this feeding mentality right now, craddling fanboys with spin-offs, and its a very unheathly way of experiencing movies. Tarantino is saying "no" to those who want more. That's an artists decision and there's integrity to that.

I agree with your first point for sure, but I don't think QT is rejecting the idea of fanboy, spin-offs, and toxic social media campaigns. The artistic merit isn't in rejecting something else, the artistic merit is staying the master of his own ship.

@@MentalDeviant Exactly, but you're obviously not an ego-maniacal freak like Quentin Tarantino who has lived in the eye of the Hollywood bubble for three decades, and whose major purpose is to leave behind a self-perpetuating legacy grander than oneself. He is one of a handful of individuals in this position to do so, and because he has an astute understanding as to how these things play out, he's doing it for himself in an attempt to write as much of his own legacy as possible.
