A short flight in a full panel Mixed Reality setup using the Quest 3 Headset. See if you can read and use an iPad, checklist and necessary conrtols and instruments on a typical General Aviation VFR flight. The results my surprise you.

That felt real! Damn! One thing I think the flight simulator s/w guys can do for mixed reality is to recognise fiducials on the physical cockpit. The fiducials can be a few QR code stickers (or whatever) that you place on your physical cockpit and then the software and do its warp and alignment as required. This is not a new idea and is used a lot in 3D camera calibration. Another idea would be to have the render engine do shadow or lighting contrast adjustments based on the VR views and project that on to your physical view (hence casting shadows or lighting in your cockpit). That would make it so much more immersive!

Another great video Russ. Nice work on the chroma key boxes, they are much better than the ones you had in the first video. I think you have done a great job at showing what is available today without having to pay out a fortune for a great experience like using the Varjo XR 3. Yes, I agree, and I think it won't be long before the implementation of this type of MR will become more affordable and easier to use and have a greater resolution. Keep up the great work and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

And, did you try to use two VR glasses to fly with a copilot? Do you think it may be possible to fly with two pilots in one VR cockpit? Thanks a million. Appreciate all your efforts. Awesome work! I downloaded XWing based on your first video and set up the pass thru boxes similar to what you showed in this updated set-up. Mind you, I am using two touch screens mounted to Alpha and Bravo throttles and yokes with Knobster. I liked it, but I typically fly G1000 equipped bonanza and reading the screens through the passthru was difficult (as you mentioned). For now, I have put this effort on the back burner because XWing was not stable on my computer and the aircraft I want to practice on weren’t available. I have my fingers crossed that I can make this work on MSFS in the near future

The thing I like about your videos and what you are trying to acomplish is the fact that you are a real pilot and you have a good grasp of what real flying looks and feels like. It's not a "flying game" to you but a new way to get good quality flying experience and training. I call it "IRON SHARPENING IRON".. I still use my old MSFS 2002 Pro edition with my laptop..hooked up to a bigscreen and it works for me..I don't need all the prettyclouds and landscape that are shown in the MSFS 2020.. just the basic core elements.. ( six pack ..radio..atc..joystick or yoke and throttle with rudder pedals..big screen monotor..) Pure basic flying.. It's like driving a VW stick shift bug .and Imaging it's a Porche or Lambo... Or making your ladyfriend put on a Cheerleaders outfit of your favorit team and.... Well you know... (I better stop right there..) Great video!! Press on!! 🇺🇸

@rbarlow
@rbarlow 6 ай бұрын
Absolutely. I would build a panel and possibly even a single monitor/big screen TV and get that working and become familiar before I try diving into the more detailed stuff. Definitely consider buying a computer that will be VR compatible so you don’t have to upgrade. Once you master the simulator in the basics of building a Cockpit Time panel (or buying one) then you can move on to VR.. The honeycomb, alpha and bravo, or a good choice for a first set of controls. They have a lot of the basics, which is you need to fly a training flight from start up to shut down. If you weren’t a private pilot I wanting to do some realistic training I might say just start with VR and enjoy the view. But it’s not great for training at this point MR will be a solution in the future but right now unless you know what you were doing it would drive me crazy trying to get it working together. Good luck.

First of all great video. I have a question a little off topic but how do you manage 3 hour flights with the Quest 3? Does the battery last if plugged into your PC? My Quest 2 I have plugged into the PC and the max I can get is an hour and a half and it dies. Does the quest 3 die after an hour and a half even though it’s plugged in? I even checked when mine is plugged in and I have the lighting bolt through the battery indicating it’s charging yet it still dies after an hour and a half. Soooooooo how long can you fly with the quest 3 before it dies on you? I also do sim racing and my races are 3 hours long so I can’t use my quest 2. I have to just run on my triples which is fine but man you lose so much not being in VR. Ugh. I refuse to buy another VR that does after an hour and a half. To me that’s useless. In fact that would be a great video, how long does the quest 3 last while plugged into a PC? I would love to know. Thanks.

@rbarlow
@rbarlow 6 ай бұрын
Noticed it too. There is some sort of dept sensor /auto focus and maybe since there are objects of different distance ( eg. Checklist and panel) it warps the image trying to smooth the transition between the two not knowing they are separate objects? Just a guess. Not very noticeable in the headset for some reason.

Russ, I noticed that even though in previous videos you showed that you are a fan of Reality XP's GTN 650/750 GPS's for use in X-Plane, that they are not in the Air Manager panel for this video. I assume this means that you have found the same thing I have - seems impossible to use then in VR outside of the VR space on the Air Manager panel screen. It seems only possible if you use two networked computers running X-PlANE - one non-VR with all the controls the Air Panel, and The RealityXP GTN, and another one in VR with the headset. This seems like too much effort to me. By any chance have you found an easier way to have the GTN in the Air Panel that is viewed by Reality Mixer while in VR?

Thx Russ for another interesting video. XR gives mixed feelings. Your panel is rounded off at the edges, yet the line of the pass through is square, which makes it, together with the obstructive colour, hardly to overlook. Furthermore, as you said at the end, how about cockpit builders of larger airliners? These set ups are a lot more complicated. How many pass through panels are possible? All in all, an interesting development.
@rbarlow
@rbarlow 6 ай бұрын
Initially the solution for the airliners could be as simple as placing physical green screens (I think pink works better) outside the windows of the simulator, and allow the video to be composited into the video image of a cockpit from the headset. In the end, there might be a way that instead of the green screen areas showing The pass-through video the pass-through video could allow the virtual world to be seen through similar areas. Think of a apartment with a large picture window. It seems to me it would be easier to use the passer video as the basis, and then composite through the opening of the window the outside world. Currently with reality mixer You would have to create a complete room, the only opening being where the window is, and that would allow pass-through video to surround the virtual world image, which would only be visible in the small window. Seems like it would be easy to switch the video feeds in the proposition and make it work either way by choice.

@tylerouellette7453
@tylerouellette7453 6 ай бұрын
I think there is a fairly simple solution to make this work smoother and without the Reality mixer software and just use virtual desktop. Depending on the simulator, one could possibly create an aircraft livery or mod that retextures the cockpit of the aircraft. Essentially, one could make the areas of the in game cockpit they want to pass through the chromakey color. This would negate any need to align the boxes, virtual cockpit, and real world together. You would probably only need to recenter the game window a couple times to get it to line up correctly. The assumptions made here come from my experience in flying, moding, and livery making in DCS: World. However, I would be surprised if the same principles could not be used in most flight simulators.
@jimmydesouza4375
@jimmydesouza4375 6 ай бұрын
If you have a problem of the headset unaligning once you take it off, have you tried just taping over the proximity sensor so as far as the headset knows you never take it off? It's a relatively common mod. Some headsets require a small amount of light to get to the proximity sensor though so you have to experiment with semi-transparent tape like painters tape.

Mr. Barlow, I have recently just begun to look into achieving my dream of being a pilot and the flight simulator seems to be an essential part of training and continuing experience. To that point, you talk about a lot of technical things that are quite foreign to me, and probably others. What you are showing in this video is at least a part of what i would like to someday create. So, my question is, without searching all over the web for information, what would be your suggestion for someone that would like to begin the process of learning how to build a very nice flight simulator like yours. I have subscribed to your channel and will be watching all you videos, but I thought if there was a path that an experienced person like yourself could offer up, I would greatly appreciate your feedback. Thank you for making these videos and they are very well done and have a ton of info. my problem is, much of it is Greek to me. - Dan
@rbarlow
@rbarlow 6 ай бұрын
You need to learn Greek😀. Seriously you might start with the Kindle book Flight Simulation for Beginners: A Guide to Get You Started a.co/d/554WBdw I know the author and write the forward for the book. It is a broad coverage of the subject to get you started. Like any subject it is a process and there is no quick fix. You may already have good knowledge of computers and that will help but if not you have to learn about that as well as about aviation. The flight simulator and a course of study like Sporty’s Pilot shop offers will pay dividends in reduced training costs when you get to actual flight training in an expensive airplane. www.sportys.com/eaa-virtual-flight-academy-simulator-software-package.html I’d probably start with X-Plane 12 since the flight model is more realistic and you don’t need perfect scenery to kern the basics. You can add Microsoft Flight Simulator later to enjoy lifelike scenery later in the cross country phase. Let me know if I can help further at barlow320 at the gmail domain which is s dot com

After a little tweaking I got it to work and tied it to a button on my hotas to toggle it on/off. The problems I have is 1: like you said, the passthrough quality is still pretty low hence the need for a toggle, and 2: virtual desktop doesn’t seem to play well with DCS and so there’s a ton of lag and glitching to the point where it’s nearly unplayable. X-Plane 12 once it is installed doesn't require internet except to verify the license occasionally, Air Manager is the same way. You should check with a Quest 3 expert but once things are set up I think you router could be disconnected from the internet. I would think a 5G phone as a hotspot would be good enough if you are using a link cable to connect the headset to the PC. Sorry, that's the best I can do.

Your 172 panel that you appear to be actually touching and interating with...is this another touch screen, a piece of hardware or is it generated by the the flight sim?? It's the answer to my prayers in any event. I am a 2000 hour Commercial pilot who just can't afford the cost of flying. I still want to learn more about the G1000. Rented a Diamond a couple of times for my annual pilgridide tooing to study Oshkosh...it was glorious but very expensive! I am going to study your two videos a bit more. I understand the Chromakey but am still unclear on all the hardware and software used to create your masterpiece. Looking forward to learning more! David Winston Salem, NC

The forward panel and the controls are a physical cockpit panel I built and has LCD touchscreens running Air Manager which I interact with. This is what the Quest 3 cameras are passing through to Reality Mixer. You need a screen to manage the basic computer tasks and to launch the programs but after starting the headset this can be mirrored in a big floating window in the headset. As for the sim it can open completely in VR on the headset so you need no additional monitors for scenery. It is generated by the sim and shown in VR in the headset. With no big TV monitors you sim can be in a very small space. Also since the headset has a 16 foot cable you could have two cockpits…fighter and airplane set up and use the headset and computer on either setup. Really flexible.

OMG...this is great news. I have 3 - 40 inch monitors that I will not need. The Oculus 3 arrives Wednesday maybe.I am shopping for the touch screens for the 6 pack/G1000. They seem to have a bunch of different specs. Will they all have a small enough grid to handle all the smaller buttons etc? You are a true gentleman and a scholar!!!

I am learning fast!! Great seeing you in person on IvanSky's post at the Air Manager booth. It's happening! Well it's all gonna happen very fast and it's going to be because of you and your innovations. Thanks for being out there helping the rest of us get going with some sophisticated SIM!! Based on your recommendation, my new Oculus 3 just got here and it's vastly better the by Oculus 2...light years beyond! Just what you said it would be. David Winston Salem, NC

does xplane 12 need to be installed on the quest 3 headset for this mixed reality setup or can xplane 12 be run from a fast desktop with fast graphics card and then link the quest 3 into you desktop for showing the display if xplane 12 is running directly from the quest 3 sim card and cpu i dont think quest 3 has the processing power built in to run xplane 12 smoothly with latest payware mods FF visual xp installed etc

Pretty sure flight sims are all PCVR (tethered to a desktop computer) at present time.
@rbarlow
@rbarlow 6 ай бұрын
You can run the quest three as a standalone, or you can tether it via a link cable or via high-speed Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi six). The video Passthrough stays on the headset and is used to replace the color boxes that reality mixer generates. virtual desktop make that possible. When the quest is tethered, it can operate just like a VR headset and display video from the simulator running on the computer.

Don't know if a panel with screens is worth the mixed vr hassle, cockpits can look quite good great in VR amd that way you can change aicrafts. But for every controll you touch and unrralisticly hypotheticall a panel with controlable instruments are something What's really something some5hing though is the pad, that's what I kiss most in VR, I can find my other conteols fine with my hands but usinf a touch device in VR... ouch. You used it with the quest, do think mixed vr for at least the tablet would work with an older PCvVR headset too? No idea about that and I don't have the merves and time right now for a. experiment or research that would be futile anyways.

At 13:41 you say “it only works with xplane and doesn’t work with openxr” I’m not totally sure what that means. Does it mean this setup can’t be made to work with MSFS?
@rbarlow
@rbarlow 5 ай бұрын
I thought that was true at the time. I should have said it only works with MSFS running under SteamVR. Set the Virtual Desktop OpenXR settings on the Streamer app on your computer to SteamVR. The additional SteamVR overhead seems like a waste but with a strong computer it works fine.

@@rbarlowi have this working with msfs and SteamVR and a rtx 2080 super. It’s acceptable but I’m thinking of a GPU upgrade at this point. I will say, i had a tough time getting this all to work until i uninstalled Bitdefender anti virus. As always, you do a great job.

In reality mixer is possible to create mask with round shapes or only squares?
@rbarlow
@rbarlow 6 ай бұрын
So far only rectangular prisms. I was thinking one could replace the areas in the sim with the chroma-key color to get the pass through video from Virtual desktop. RM developer is saying more different shapes in the future but to me OpenXR support is a bigger priority.

@@rbarlow Hi Russ, long time lurker for all your videos and posts on various forums. Two quick questions: 1) Have you tried to edit cockpit textures in MSFS with the passthrough color in order to negate the need for RM by simply using VD's passthrough feature? If so, how did it work and how did you do it? 2) Have you found any other way to avoid having to reset RM's passthrough boxes at every start up (other than the transparent tape mod someone else mentioned here)?

Imagine if only the physical controls could be mixed in and the displays/panels/indicators/gauges etc is driven by the game.

Anyone get this to work within MS2020? I have the quest3. When I use the steamvr as openxr runtime, the flightsim will not find the vr goggles. What is the correct settings to get this to work? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLqTdplzmLbQiHU.html

I dont think that this is the future of VR siming.Why? Well, it is good for GA certainly, since it is just moderately expensive to build a "real" cockpit of small GA plane, but if you fly airliner or military planes, this is a pretty much a no go. While you can build a rather expensive cockpit of a airliner or military plane, like many youtubers done before VR, with those expenses you can build a cockpit for just one airplane only. In VR cockpit you can switch your planes easy, so I think the future is some virtual hands system that is based on glows or bare hands (not controllers).
@rbarlow
@rbarlow 6 ай бұрын
I think I said future of flight sim for training….if you are just playing around the visual immersion is better in pure VR of course. With LCD panels and Air Manager you can represent more than a single aircraft in GA but your point about complex airliners is well taken. But those sims are already locked into a single type and the Mixed Reality will offer much better visuals that even the best curved screen projection system.

@@rbarlow Thanks as usual for your work. I would love to see a real flight in Asobo Longitude with the Panel set from Sling in Mixed reality. Ya know, entering flight plan on GTC controllers with knobster.etc. I have 2x21" Asus touchscreens with 3 wide 32" but VR would be interesting if the longitude works.

Sent mine back after 10 hours trying to get it to work. Wireless/Air-Link is the problem. And crackling sound with pixelated images when you look left and right. Such an effort just to start-up. GARBAGE VR headset. Stay well clear of META QUEST III. I'll save up more dosh and just get a better VR, and it will be wired to the PC.
