So grateful for your channel. Here is a multi-part question I'd like you to address in your next Q&A...thanks in advance. Like you, me, and probably lots of your viewers, past novelist Hermann Hesse seems to have also been a Westerner heavily influenced by Buddhism (and Eastern Philosophy in general). Are you familiar with Hermann Hesse? Have you ever read his book Siddhartha (or any of his other works)? If so, what is your impression?

I've been watching this monk, and he says mindfulness of breathing is misunderstood. He says vipassana and zen practice have it wrong a little by telling you to focus on the breath or abdomen. He says that the satthipitthana sutta is saying that we need to understand and be aware that I'm taking in a long or short breath. After hearing this my meditation has been better and I'm able to breath without labor but I have to have mindfulness of the here and now, then next I remember not to identify with the thoughts and then I some how end up actually meditating. I end up relaxed and tranquil, and everything is just different. What do you think of vipassana ? Do you think they have it wrong in some ways? Being in the moment and looking at the world as if it were empty brings me to a place where I'm able to breath and be aware of the breath because I'm not forcing anything. I've never been able to focus on my breath and find anything there, but when I focus on emptiness and non self, I am able to meditate following my breath. Is this wrong or should I continue ?

Buddhism and Christianity: The first step for a Buddhist is "right view". This means recognizing the 4 Noble Truths in every aspect. Accepting a Creator God means hoping for and clinging to an immortal and imperishable self.
@saintsword23
@saintsword23 Ай бұрын
The Buddha's condemnation of belief in a creator God in the Tittha Sutta (AN 3.61) is pretty spot on. He points out that such a belief leads its adherents to a lack of effort to liberate themselves ethically and as a contemplative...to overly rely on that creator to liberate them instead of making their own efforts. It leads to a sort of fatalism, as whatever the all-powerful creator God has done in the past is what will determine everything. And this is, indeed, exactly what we see in Abrahamic religions. It's not that one can't be a Christian and a Buddhist at the same time, at least from the Buddhist side it's not wholly incompatible, but the belief in a creator God will be a hindrance. Why make an effort to meditate and renounce material things if your belief in Jesus is supposed to liberate you anyways?
@MaramadeMahayana
@MaramadeMahayana Ай бұрын
I think its incompatible precisely because of the things you mentioned. You are not a Christian without faith in Jesus/God. You are not a Buddhist without "Right View." Faith in Jesus/God gives rise to belief in an immortal soul. Let's not kid ourselves. @@saintsword23

Here is a question about negative karma. If, for example, person C steals from person B, then person C will eventually have to repay its karmic debt by having a person D steal from him in the future (or perform another type of bad deed). At the same time person B, could not have been a victim of theft if he himself did not steal from a person A in the past (or performed another type of bad deed). Using the same logic recursively, this chain of bad deeds (ABCD) can be prolonged infinitely in both the past and the future. The conclusion seems that to make one bad deed possible, an infinite chain of bad deeds needs to be in place along time, which seems both absurd, cause it requires infinite time, and unfair, cause it require a infinite amount of sentient beings to suffer bad karma. I understand that I am heavily simplifying how karma works and that even Buddha discouraged to understand how it actually operates, but I think, I am still raising a valid point. What do you think? Thanks. P.S you can pronounce my name as you wish.

Have you read the japanese philosopher Keiji Nishitani? Here’s a taste of what he writes about in case you are interested; " All things that are in the world are linked together, one way or the other. Not a single thing comes into being without some relationship to every other thing. Scientific intellect thinks here in terms of natural laws of necessary causality; mythico-poetic imagination perceives an organic, living connection; philosophic reason contemplates an absolute One. But on a more essential level, a system of circuminsession has to be seen here, according to which, on the field of Śūnyatā, all things are in a process of becoming master and servant to one another. In this system, each thing is itself in not being itself, and is not itself in being itself. Its being is illusion in its truth and truth in its illusion. This may sound strange the first time one hears it, but in fact it enables us for the first time to conceive of a force by virtue of which all things are gathered together and brought into relationship with one another, a force which, since ancient times, has gone by the name of "nature" (physis). " From Religion and nothingness (1983)

Another question about negative karma: I heard that if one hurts a Buddha, he is doomed to a hellish rebirth. But how can this make sense? If a Buddha has no karma, it does not have the karma to be hurt in the first place. Am i missing something? Thank you.

Dear Pannobhasa, With respect, I'm not sure that the Buddha or early Buddhism would agree that existence or samsara is meaningless. I think he would claim that it is a very profound and serious state of being that is, ultimately, insubstantial After all, he devoted his post enlightenment life to helping beings escape the effectively "real" condition or experience of samsara.

I've gotten into heated debates with those fools on reddit. A waste of time. In fact im banned from r/buddhism, and that was before I switched to Theravada 😂. Most of buddhism in reddit = Mahayana, and the most watered down version. I once got -20 down votes because I said "sex is unethical" 😂. They love getting into discussions promoting homosexuality, transexuals, etc. etc. I was very confused until Venerable Paññobhasa explained this emerging phenomenon of Rainbow Buddhism. That's the outer form, the inner form is cultural Marxism (I also learned from Ven P.) A shame because I thought Buddhism was spreading worldwide, but whatever is spreading they don't seem too keen on restraint and renunciation. Its all about love for all sentient being and enjoying pleasures in the present moment "mindfully". One fool had no use for the 8 precepts because some esteemed Tibetan Lama Rinpoche "boddhisattva", was able to watch Star Trek with the view of bodhichitta and emptiness 😂. They basically say you can become enlightened just the way you are, no work needed, just imagine you are a Buddha (because you already are), the non-duality of purity and defilements, they are the same, simply don't be attached. Clever and delusional people.

All the different schools are relevant and if you read the different schools there is no contradiction. The Mahayana is the natural progression and is most relevant for our modern era. Just like Judaism naturally progressed into Christianity, Buddhism naturally progressed into the Mahayana. We need the Mahayana and the help of the Buddhas as we are living in a time where mankind is more deluded then ever, and the chances of attaining enlightenment on our own without the help of the Mahayana is rare. ☯️☸️☯️
@pannobhasa
@pannobhasa Ай бұрын
Are you joking? OF COURSE there are MANY contradictions. For example the oldest texts say strive to get enlightened in this very life, and do not wish for any future existence, whereas Mahayana says nope, put off enlightenment indefinitely and/or pray to a cosmic Buddha never mentioned in the oldest texts in order to be reborn in his Pure Land. Some Mahayana texts even declare that sentient beings have a soul, or so I have been told by a serious Mahayana Buddhist.

You can of course continue to lie to yourself and claim that Mahayana still has something to do with Buddhism. Mahayana is much more of a kind of substitute Christianity with its overemphasis on "compassion". The word "compassion" does not appear that often in the Pali Canon. On the other hand, it has a lot of overlap with Hinduism. Where do Tibetan monks actually still go on alms rounds? It's just ridiculous, sorry.
@noself7889
@noself7889 27 күн бұрын
@@pannobhasa Actually Mahayanists do strive for enlightenment but it is done for the benefit of all sentient beings and not just oneself. There is no contradiction in the teachings just a progression of understanding and doctrine. There have been many Buddhas throughout history that have brought new ideas and doctrines into Buddhism. There are also different levels of enlightenment. The Buddha taught enough to get one to the base level of enlightenment. The Great vehicle expanded on this knowledge.
@pannobhasa
@pannobhasa 27 күн бұрын
@@noself7889 "All sentient beings" are an illusion, and don't really exist; and if one believes that they DO really exist, then that becomes DElusion. Also, there will always be an infinite number of unenlightened and suffering beings, though as was already pointed out they don't really exist. With regard to Buddhas throughout history, there have been a total of ONE. All the others, in Theravada and Mahayana, like Kassapa Buddha, Dipankara Buddha, or Amitabha Buddha, are mythology, not history. With regard to different levels of enlightenment, either you are fully enlightened or you are not. For later Buddhists to cook up higher levels of enlightenment is just making stuff up. The Buddha taught how to become enlightened, that is, how to realize the Absolute. The so-called Great Vehicle is a broad spectrum of the ridiculous to the sublime, and in some cases teaches the exact opposite of what the only historical Buddha taught to his disciples.
