Question Everything: Why does the MBTA still use CharlieCards?

Since 2006 when the final token was used on the MBTA, the primary form of payment for a ride on the T has been the CharlieCard. WBZ-TV's Kristina Rex reports.

so we can buy more useless recharging stations that don't work or is slow to process? it's the 21st century even credits companies that are greedy as hell can get this right for their customers. but not the mbta

The company that received the contract to make the new payment system ditched Boston after receiving nearly $1 billion because NYC hired them to do the same thing.

Charlie is so iconic to the T! They shouldn't get rid of him, just have virtual Charlie Cards on your phone that you can tap to pay

Most people who are just visiting Boston for a few days are probably not going to want to download yet another app on their phone for something that they're only going to use for such a short period of time. This is especially true for seniors who may just have a 2G phone or who would just prefer to have a traditional paper card instead.

Even when the MBTA institutes Open Loop Payments, Charlie will likely still be staying around. As example, London's TfL introduced Contactless over a decade ago but they still have their transit smart card

Physical Cards > Tapping with Phone I am a traditionalist.

Using a phone as your ID is a MAJOR security risk, while with a Charlie Card all you risk is the value on the card if it is lost or stolen. Phones can be stolen, as can the IDs on them, and how such IDs connect to your Credit Cards etc.

Exactly, New York lets you pay with your bank card and Apple Pay. Why Boston?

Everything about U.S. infrastructure is antiquated when compared to other first world countries. Perhaps less tax payer funds spent on foreign countries and more spent on our own domestic needs.
