I am 17 and have applied for Computer Science and ICT degrees in Universities in the UK.
I enjoy setting up servers, building computers, fixing computers and a but of programming but I enjoy the physical aspect of computing more...
Which one is the best for me?

Like software? Enjoy hardware? Can you program? Like low-voltage electrical? Be a Computer Engineering major. And yes, even for the smarties, engineering is indeed hell, especially EE and CompE.

Having finished university last summer, I can couldn't agree more with you Eli. To all those people wondering which path in technology to take, just pick a broad degree and then decide as you're studying which aspect you enjoy most.

Hafsa Mohamed What I found whilst applying to University is that there are just so many choices to choose from. So many it was overwhelming. Sure I enjoyed computers, but I had no idea which area of computers I actually enjoyed. So I looked through the courses and picked a course that included modules that were in other degrees. So I developed mobile apps, databases, websites, software (ish), games (ish). I finished University with a 1st class honours degree and I can honestly say I don't know half as much code as some other students at the time. I enjoyed being able to be a jack of all trades and master of none. One lecturer said to me, "imagine the whole computing field as being split into 3 sections. The first section involves those who build the actual computer and all it's parts. The second section involves those who use the computer to build the software. The final section involves those individuals who use the software to build actual products." The reason I say a broad degree is because it's just such a massive industry and I personally don't think it's feasible for someone to put all their eggs in one basket. Depending on what area of the computing field you choose you will have a varied amount of programming exposure. I start my first graduate job as a developer tomorrow, so I could let you know how much it compares to University. The term "programming" can be used in all areas. Programming in HTML or PHP, it's just the process of writing the code. Some degrees will involve more intensive programming than others. But you'll find out what you truly enjoy when you begin university. All the best mate :)

I'm 22 now and I understand what you mean by the "working for money" thing. I've learned based off my experiences that the quality of work that I output is complete and utter shit compared to when I'm fully engaged. It's a no-brainer really but it's hard to think with your brain when you have money on your mind.

In my University, I must pick between applied Calculus 1 or Calculus 1, (Obviously pick applied calculus) and statistics or applied statistics. And then I'm required to take Pre-Calculus 1, and discrete math-computing. I must do these to get my BS in ComSci.

In the UK when you apply it is assumed you already have the pre-requisites to get onto the course. You don't pick majors / minors; the title of the course is the degree you will have. E.g. You apply for Computer Science with a presumed ABB in let's say Maths and then two other subjects. If you achieve those grades in your final exams before university then you are accepted onto the degree program. We have 13 years and so skip the whole first year university thing you have in the US.

I want to build a big website that has multiple profiles for clients, chat boxes, email messaging boxes, and just a big website in general. I have some experience in HTML. I am willing to put money towards this website but not so much since I don't have $$$$, and I am not completely experienced with developing but I am learning. I don't know if I need a degree in technology, entrepreneurship or programming. By the way, programming scares me. I am not so great at math. Also, thank you very much for providing useful information. I subscribed to your videos. :)

I took calculus 1-3, differential equations, linear algebra, statistics, discrete mathematics, and vector calculus when studying computer Science, all to realize I barely ever use it. Edit: you're right Eli, these days there are many people doing CS because they found out "it pays well", which is causing ferocious competition in the job market for those of us who genuinely love it. In fact, to be honest, you don't even need a degree for many jobs and a lot of CS related jobs are very inviting to people of different backgrounds. For example, I've come across many job postings where the education required was a bachelors in CS, EE, ME, Accounting, or even Finance was acceptable. I doubt the reverse is ever true. But then again you never know.

Just to give you a heads up because you don't know the UK system, you need to get the prerequisites before you can even approach a bachelors degree in the uk, generally, A-levels that generally match the specific area in which you want to specialise in, Which are generally an extra two years on top education already completed. Hence the reason why, in some cases bachelors degrees in uk are three years Because of the already advanced schooling completed beforehand, which is generally mandatory.

so I blew off going to college when I should have to pursue a career as a skateboarder/ dope smoker... well when that didn't pan out my next best option was a hip hop producer/dope dealer. long story short a few years later I find myself in 115 degree heat on an oil rig with 2 baby's at home. now I'm 34 years old working at a rock and dirt yard miserable, broke and desperately trying to go about things the right way. I was even about to get a degree at ittech witch is apparently worthless. all jokes aside! I'm interested in electrical engineering and would like your opinion on were i should obtain a degree or training in this field if tech schools are scams.
@tezwoacz
@tezwoacz 7 жыл бұрын
they are not scams, they teach you about specific subject but don't give you overall understanding. If you want to go for IT start with certificates but never stop learning just get as much knowledge as possible in a field that you like.

2 years in; Business Administration: Computer Information Systems & studying for CCNA. Someone tell me if I'm doing life right. I also don't want to code and debug allday. I would take a networking/admin/system/business analyst 65k job and work my way up over a programming 75k+ job any fucking day. I like being social, up on my feet, and throwing cables around. So, someone tell if I'm doing life right so far.

+666NedFlanders Dam my comment is 7 months old. Anyways, I literally laughed out loud. You are extreme, but you do give a great point. I got the taste of being a systems analyst (intern), and I love it. This is probably the area I want to focus in, and I found it to be a very social and interactive for an IT related position. Studying cisco and other certs is still enjoyable and it will never hurt to be well rounded.

Frank Einstein At this time it is not as robust as I would like it to be. I have a couple of complete/worthwhile rails app with moderate styling. I am learning Angular so that I can add more interactivity to them and eventually create a third one. I have just started creating this last month and a half, while still rounding out my stack. What would be a good point to have your portfolio, in your opinion?

Would you ever suggest someone just bypass a degree and work just on certifications? It seems like degrees are holding less weight these days. Also did you use to box or fight when you were younger? You got some fighter ears going on man.

+Brian0wns If they actually know what they want to do. So many folks just want to "work on computers" and have no idea what that means... So if you did electronics in the military and then wanted to get your MCSE that makes sense. If you don't know the difference between Computer Science and IT then you should go to college... Want to build an app to improve logistics --- Self study/ certifications Want to do something related to app development --- go to college
