Hi Eli, my name is Silas. I have a question. I wanna ask ur opinion about an online university in US (OOSA as u say it), known as University Of People. I am a Pakistani citizen and I work as a Salesman in Oman, I really wanna get a degree in computer science and the best way for me is to do the online program with UOPeople. So I wanna know if u have any info about this University.

Eli, We would like to start by thanking you for the recent video you posted about studying at University of the People. Videos such as yours help to spread the word to students around the world who could really benefit from UoPeople but may not have heard of us yet. There are two small points which we think people should know: 1. UoPeople is non-profit organization. The $100 exam processing fee is only in order to remain sustainable. For students who cannot afford these nominal fees, the University works very hard to offer many scholarship opportunities. 2. UoPeople is able to provide high quality academic education and keep costs down. By embracing collaborative learning, utilizing open educational resources and open source technology, as well as the assistance of some of its over 3,000 volunteers, many of them professors from world-class universities, UoPeople is able to disrupt the common assumption of “what you pay is what you get”. Again, thank you very much for profiling the University in your video channel and spreading the word about the opportunity to study online and tuition-free, towards an accredited degree! Warm regards, University of the People www.uopeople.edu

@Think and grow up 3 courses max, 2 is suggested. You will be required to peer review three other students assignments a week. On both the first assignment and the second assignment. It is a lot of writing in A.P.A. You will also have to take a quiz each week based on the reading, and join a general discussion with at least 3 rated comments. In addition there is a journal assignment with the teacher each week that is graded as well. When it comes to cost they are true to their word. There is absolutely no cost other than exam fees. Which is a $100 per class, per final exam. The school is an accredited online University, and mostly taught by Professors from UC Berkeley and NYU as a passion project for affordable education for all. Hope this helps!! 🥰

There are hundreds of thousands of people working in the Computer field without any degrees, so how can a Nationally accredited Degree in Computer Science from the University of the people, not be a plus on your resume? Will it open all doors? No, either will a degree from Penn State. So, if a guy with no degree can get in the door, than a degree from UoPeople should get you in that same door. Keep in mind you paid $4000.00 + 4 years of your time, so if after graduation it takes you 6 months to find a $60K salary, you're winning!

The reason why people ask about the decision they "already made" is because you can give them some new information that can change their mind or enforce their position. It does matter what you say about it.

Your correct,in reality, any one should have his own mind about anything even if he or she isn't certain about it. So because someone comes to you for advise doesn't mean, they should be completely blank about the subject, we all have our own personal perception about a thing.

Psychology is a funny thing though. Sometimes we seek confirmation from other people, just to comfort us because we doubt our decision. However; when presented with information that conflicts with what we already "know" we will fend off this information like an attack and become even more convinced of our initial decisions. That's a large part of why psychologists can't give very direct advice to their patients but need to lead them to figure things out for themselves.

I really don't get it, most of college is usually self guided anyway. You go to class, the instructor talks about things, you come home or dorm and study for a couple of hours. You are also expected to do the HW on your own anyway and half the classes never check HW so you're shit out of luck if you don't do Homework (especially for math or science classes). I was in a community college but I'm transferring and I will be getting my online Computer Science degree from the University of Illinois so I can work and help my family who is struggling financially.
@spyderpilotuser
@spyderpilotuser 8 жыл бұрын
+O Waz My college experience in computer science was not self-guided at all. My professors would teach concepts and then we would put those concepts to work as a class and see if we could write the code for the problem. We would also get homework to do to see if we could even further express that we know the concepts. I almost never had to look to the class book to see how to do something because the professors explained it so well in class.
@carla.m.9356

+O Waz I agree. I did math as an undergrad & it was nearly entirely self taught in the basement of my dorm, six nights a week until well after midnight. I met my advisor maybe three times during my entire undergraduate career. And I'm sure I paid more than $4K for *that*. I hope more and more places like UoP come about so that vast swathes of students leave traditional institutions that're just milking students into debt. Competition and evolution.

The accreditation is AUTHORIZED by the U.S. Department of Education. The students are taught also by professors from NYU, Princeton, Oxford, etc. Students have been hired by major companies like IBM, and others. This is an excellent opportunity for computer science because coders in other programs like boot camps are making 6 figures. This is a NORMAL accreditation because it is accepted by U.S. Dept. of Education.

I am honestly very scared in deciding which major I want to be in. Originally I wanted to become a nurse because it is a decent pay, I get to interact with people and help out. However I am also really interested in computers and learning how to code. I would like to be capable of making games such as WoW and Guild Wars 2, maybe even console games. I'd also be interested in working for google (who isn't?) however I really don't know if I'd like to do programming my whole like, whereas I don't think I'd want to clean up a old mans shit all the time too. I'd like to hear some of your opinions/comments on this, want to get as much insight and opinions as possible.

I like the point you make about the context of learning methods in the classroom as opposed to monologue methodology online. I'm not sure if they make you pay another $100 if you don't pass the exam??? I have an Associate degree and would like to complete my Bachelor's degree and perhaps Masters someday, thereafter. I don't have a lot of time, since I'm sort of close to my retirement. I'm going on 52, still bright and love computers, but no more Financial Aid for me. I see about 7 to 9 more years until I settle and retire. I suppose I can use the College Tax Credit in my Income Tax and use that to pay most of the yearly fees at a Brick and Mortar College. I just don't want to attend an in class environment. I'm older and don't feel confident about being with 20 somethings. What would you do???
@Scarletpimpanel73
@Scarletpimpanel73 8 жыл бұрын
Having studied online and on campus I can say confidently that the content covered in both is the same - however what Eli says about context is spot on. I like self study and do really well with it however the amount I learn on campus simply from talking to other students after lectures or during breaks is significant. You don't get that online and that is something to really take into consideration. You'll cover the same topics and earn the same degree but there is a value add in gong to a campus if you can. It really comes down to what your options are. If you learn the material you're career won't be screwed or anything - most employers don't ask about degrees apart from maybe if you have one or not.

My advisor replies immediately to my emails and he assisted me to get the $60 registration fee. Hopefully I won't have to use any money during the whole program because of the scholarships. Would love to hear your opinion now, since the pandemic hit. Dr. Atieh's comment from below is a very true comment. The DOE does accept the University of the People, since it is DEAC accredited. People are, however, very ticklish about and are very unsure of what it is in the hiring departments of the Universities in my area. Very interesting fact....the University where I got my BA last month is now closing...totally regionally accredited. The University of the People is still here. The best comment made on this video is that it really is up to the individual to make what educational system that they can do work for them. I have talked with a person who got their BA and MBA from University of the People and loved the experience and has had no problem with it. Nowhere is perfect, for sure. I have to admit that I do really love the premise of this University!

It would be great to have an update on this, I'm studying at UOpeople right now and it's entirely based on conversation asking questions and having your thinking challenged. Every week you have to discuss with your course mates and you have questions or challenges for you from the course instructor, as well as an assessment. When I first heard about University of the People, I thought it was a dynamic idea. However, there is a problem: It only has national accreditation (as seen in the video), and not regional accreditation. Regional accreditation is the gold standard with universities and credits earned at UoP may not transfer to say, University of Iowa, UCLA or MIT (NYU will take the credits though because they are one of the sponsors of UoP). The founder and all of the companies and schools involved mean well, but it cannot be taken seriously until they get that gold standard, and that may not happen since they would have to charge tuition.

is this video still holding any weight? Im interested to know honestly... I've got brick and mortar education, plus online accreditation... honestly... my online accredited certificates benefit me more.... but i dont have a masters or phd, so i guess that makes things different? Brick and mortar is impressive depending on audience, as much as what university...

I'm looking at their transfer credit history, and it looks like they've accepted transfer courses from Harvard and MIT. Those schools tend to have very, VERY low dropout rates, so my guess is it's not Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates enrolling but graduating alumni. Excellent sign for who will be your classmates.

It is $4000 for the ENTIRE degree. I know for sure $4000 is cheap than any in state university's annual tuition. And remember An annual tuition is ONLY good for 9 months. You need to pay extra for the summer. So $4000 for the entire bachelor's degree is unbelievably cheap.

Agreed. His opening remark about how the person seeking advice "already has an answer" is narrow-minded of him. What if the person seeking advice has no background knowledge on American education and they need a Westerner to guide them through. Not everyone is living with the same dilemmas or thinking with the same mindset. Sometimes people need another's opinion to see their problem with fresh-eyes.

Is it not possible that your questioner wants reaffirmation of his decision? Also, this from the UoPeople site, just to balance what you are saying...and yes, I am about to start volunteering for them in a short while: "...UoPeople asks students to cover the cost of processing exams at $100 per end-of course exam. This fee is a non-refundable Exam Processing Fee for each exam taken. For students who are unable to pay this amount, UoPeople has created a variety of scholarship funds dedicated to meeting the unique needs of our students. Students may apply for a UoPeople scholarship to cover up to the full cost of the Exam Processing Fees."

So my question was But a company will take you seriously on your interview once you show that your degree comes from university of the people? And pretty much you answer it Now i understand the world is indeed changing and many places are now taking serious this new ways of degrees, preparation etc And yes compare different great universities is not the meaning of your knowledge is the persons choice to really be prepared and focus on their future than a person who pretty much dont give a damn during time in college. But lets say that we have 2 candidates who are prepared “equally” meaning That both have the potential to example run a business from that same business degree and both are equally talented and focus to really work in their future. But that moment when you apply to that job whos gonna be taken seriously?

I've reached out to UoP several times via their website contact page, requesting a counselor or officer please contact me to clarify a few questions. I never ever got a reply back. I realize they're limited in man-power-hours, but potential students should be able to speak with university/program representatives before making the significant time (and still, financial) investments...

The only accreditation that matters is regional accreditation by one of the six regional accrediting agencies that are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, by other established universities and colleges that are regionally accredited, and most importantly, by prospective employers. If you're willing to spend $4,000, you'd be much better off considering alternatives like Udacity Nanodegrees that are built around practical, hands-on projects that you can show to a prospective employer and that can be completed in as little as 6 months. Also, there are regionally accredited universities that have online computer science degree programs that are affordable and that offer the same flexibility as University of the People. One of those is Fort Hays University, for example... They have a CS program with a minor in Business Administration that you could get for just a little more than $4,000 if you transfer credit in. They're located here: www.fhsu.edu/virtualcollege/degrees/bachelors/computer-science/

Hi Eli I do agree with some of your comments, however, if HP and Microsoft support this idea even with interships, plus they have people from top universities teaching and helping, plus some other things, I think uopeople is a good option. Besides, I also think that to give a better opinion it is necessary to go thru the process of taking at least a class and see what the quality is, so if none else says something else before, I´ll come back in two months and let you guys know...

Latonia Smith Thank you very much for your reply. I am still considering this program, and you are the only person attending the courses that I can reach at. My big concern is the instructors and the course materials. Where are the instructors normally from? I heard they are all volunteers, so I am concerned whether they teach well. And you know, IT industry is changing fast, I don't want to learn something out-of-date.
@LatoniaSmith777
@LatoniaSmith777 9 жыл бұрын
Mengxuan Lu You are very welcome. The instructors do volunteer their time and expertise, however we are lucky to have someone of their caliber teaching us. Many of the instructors come from schools like NYU, Yale etc. These are top notch professionals, who on top of their workload with their institutions take time to help us as well. As for the curriculum, I am only in my first term. So all that I know I got from the course catalog. But in reviewing it, it seems to be very up to date. I would think that it would have had to be up to date in order to qualify for the accreditation, which they recently obtained. Also they partnered with HP and Microsoft. I can't imagine them partnering with a school that was offering out of date material. But again, in the end, you have to decide what is a good fit for you. It was the right choice for me.

I don't know about the immigration process, but any accredited computer science program will be enough education to get a job, generally. When it comes to coding, they are mostly concerned with how much you know, rather than what degrees and certificates you have (although those still help a lot). If you can do the job, you can get the job. This program should be enough education to get a job.

$4,000 in testing fees is still a good deal. My 4-year private university charged me roughly $6,000 per credit class per semester and I ended up borrowing $50,000 in loans. I did the math on their non-AACSB MBA and it's a little over $2,000 in fees. Try finding an MBA anywhere in the world that costs less than that. You are right. It's not for everyone. But for the right kind of person, it's a good deal. Most state governments will accept these degrees, as they are nationally accredited by DEAC and recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. But, when it comes to private employers, well, private employers can choose to recognize or refuse to recognize any kind of education of their choosing. There are even some famous people in Silicon Valley who have openly said that they will refuse to hire anyone with an MBA, that they train their own business people and don't like people coming in with schooled ideas.
