Super useful tip! I use an astronomy filter on my telescope (Optolong L extreme) that tints most of the highlights a red color. So converting to monochrome gives the photo a more natural look!

Who would have thought you can do this with Affinity Photo? Well done, Dave - yet another simple but stunning application.

very interesting . Using the vibrance adjustment layer and setting saturation to 0 works much better than setting the saturation in the HSL adjustment to 0.. Most people I know use this method. Have you tried what many people consider the purest form of monochrome from a color photo? I n this you take the inverse of a color picture using the invert adjustment layer and set the blend mode to color then set the opacity to 50% This is claimed to be the purest form of a black and white version as it perfectly matches the colors of the original and the inverse. I use this method but your vibrance adjustment layer and reducing the saturation is interesting.

I forgot to add that if the original is oversaturated you will see color in this approach you can then reduce that color in the original. THisis because the over saturation and setting the blend to color could not neutralize the oversaturation. I use this as a second way ( as opposed to my saturation mask macros which I have made available on the Affinity forum) to detect and correct oversaturation. I have a macro for this which I will put in forum.

Not see this one before -- thanks, Hans! A duplicated, inverse image at 50% gives grey as the 50% negative cancels the 50% positive. Adding the Colour blend is a neat touch as it now seems to use the inverse to bias this mid-point, using the Luminance of the original to ensure a positive result.

...just experimented with this. Invert adjustment (Colour blend, 50% opacity), skies and reds come out fairly dark which is just fine. Can also add HSL first to bump up saturation (interesting effect). Another HSL layer at end with saturation right down seems ok to kill any colour bleed-through. Are you ok if I do a video about this?

@@inaffinityforaffinityphoto3220 when you do this there could be some color remaining. The color that remains , if any, is oversaturated, that's why you place the HSL layer between the original and the invert adjustment. you can adjust the saturation by using th color picker ( this is important) in the HSL layer to remove the over saturation. IF you then eliminate the invert adjustment layer you have then corrected over saturation in the picture. IF you dont remove the invert adjustment layer then you have a pure form of black and white....be my guest to do a video. I got this idea from Blake Rudis.

where is quick and easy copy paste selection. Currently not available.

If you make a selection, just use Ctrl-C to copy (or look in the Edit menu). When you use Ctrl-V it will paste the selection as a new layer. The Edit menu also has a choice of other paste actions.

InAffinity for Affinity Photo Sorry I meant the iOS version. Affinity Photo on iOS is light years of Photoshop iOS. But for some reason its hard to design such a primary function in a intuitive and logic way. Please tell the iOS developers exactly what you said. Copy and paste a selection should be as easy on iOS as control C and Control V. Its that important and a primary function. The current options are not a solution to this problem and need to be adressed. Thank you.

@@MultiMam12345 No worries and it's not that obvious. Go to Photo persona then the three dots (commands) at the top of the page and then and Pasteboard. There'll you find all the copy /paste stuff.

InAffinity for Affinity Photo I know that. Please try it yourself. Or ask any of your colleages. You should have a meeting about this. Seriously;) Please try it. Do a basic copy and paste selection to a new layer operation and count how many actions it requires to get it done. You guys need to fix this. Trust me. This is not a beginners question. And i'm not the only one asking for this common sense in UX design. Thank you:)
