My girlfriends 2020 Escape Titanium AWD had shudder when driving. The dealership never even mentioned that they hadn't changed the tranny fluid. They only wanted to scare her into thinking that she would need to buy another car. Thanks to some forums and this video 45 minutes of work turned a 4500 problem into a 105 dollar fix.

Thanks, Brian. I just did this on our 2020 AWD Escape with 1.5 I3.Its definitely a pain, but not that difficult. The hardest part is getting the trans up to temp. I used ForScan with a harness made for it - $35 on Amazon. The issue for me was that I let the car idle, which tool a very long time to come to temp. BUT, before I was done, the car did the auto shut off, which puked out a couple quarts through the level plug! TIP- After adding the new fluid, close up the level plug and drive for about 20 min in sport mode. I got back reading 200 F and removed the driver front wheel (lowering the body back down to ride height) to more easily access the level plug

Perfect Brian! You must have read my mind. I have a 2020 Edge that just turned 30,000 miles. I'm in talks with a local shop to install a catch can. Been well below zero here. He said he'll do it when the temps get into the 40's. My idea with the trans, is to drain the trans fluid, measure it, and put the same amount you took out back in. That way you don't have to mess with the leveling plug as most of don't have a lift. Doesn't seem there would be much loss of fluid from vapor.

@@FordTechMakuloco Thanks for your input Brian. But like you pointed out, the trans vent wasn't covered in fluid. If it was, then I'd be concerned and use the leveling plug. But most of us DIYer's have front ramps only, so when we drive it up on the ramps, the trans is not level, and wouldn't get an accurate reading Got an estimate from a Ford dealer before seeing your vid. The dealership wants $150.00 for fluid change. I'm not tight, but that's too much.

Thank you! I have the oil and put this off too long!! 2020 Escape AWD 2.0L 75K, bought at 50K. Already changed PTU and rear diff. Unfortunately, the AWD control module failed. I replaced it, but Ford dealer still wanted $400 to pair it with the diff module. OK. Job done. I do not have a lift so not sure I was completely level. Removed front left tire for visibility into the leveling port. Heated up the oil in the oven to 150F to save some time. Used Forscan to monitor the temp (185F=85C). Put aluminum foil over the hose and cross member. The oil smelled completely spent. Same color as you found. Might do it again in 20k given the big initial interval.

I changed the transmission fluid and filter at 75.000k Surprised at how dirty it was. Filter and pan were quite dirty. I used a Utube video to walk me through it. Now it shifts like a dream! BTW, I bought a 90.00 suction pump. Easy to use, you need a compressor however. Small one would work. Fluid stinks and is expensive, I used Ford this time, pretty use Amsoil in the future.

The only issue I see here is for those of us who don’t have a lift doing this job is almost impossible, especially if you have to deal with the leveling plug when the vehicles on ramps. Why can’t you just measure the amount of fluid that comes out and put the same amount back in?

I know most everything in the transmission is aluminum, but I'm sure there are some parts made from iron. Figured since you've got to split the transmission to change the filter every little bit would help.

We have a 2020 Escape with the 1.5L Ecoboost. We bought it used a couple of years ago, with roughly 20k miles on it. It's the SEL model, very comfortable, drives really good, and gets good fuel mileage. However, the Ford dealer we bought this from has not mentioned anything about the trans fluid needing to be changed, and we just had the engine oil changed at about 35K miles. Glad I caught this video. We are in our mid to late 60's, and do not want to have to buy another car anytime soon. Of course, after we bought the car, is when I heard about the problems with the early Ecoboost engines ingesting coolant. I did ask the service manager at the dealership, and he said they haven't had any problems with the newer models. Are we sitting on a ticking time bomb???

Hey guyinnc, I am an all-Ford man. I used to be a Ford technician before the military. If you don't have an extended warranty and plan to keep this car. I recommend a warranty. I have one for my wife's 2015 Edge and it only has 63000 miles on it. I know it's like an extra car payment for 30 months, but if anything major goes wrong, you're covered with a $150 deductible. I have one through Endurance. The Ford ESP warranty is extremely expensive, and they can only be bought when the car is under the factory warranty. If the engine gives you trouble, get it fixed and trade it in on an older pre 2019 V-6 3.5L. They last forever if you take care of them and service it properly. My last Edge 3.5L V-6 had 234,000 miles on it and ran just fine with no problems.

thanks, probably a good idea. Funny though, I contacted the service manager at the dealership we bought the car from, and he's telling me that the trans in ours is supposed to be like a sealed unit from Ford and it shouldn't need fluid replacement unless there is a problem. But he can change/flush it for us for about $350 if we want. Maybe I should forward him the link to this video.@@kevinleukhardt9560

I worked for a co that owned a fleet of F350s. We followed the mfg recommended trans service and kept having trans fail. After several years and a bunch of trans failures we hit upon the practice of filter & flush every 30K & the trams started to last the near 300K we ran these trucks. SO, thats the secret, ignore what the manual says, 30K. !

Hi Brian. I have a 2019 Edge 2.0L AWD with 51k miles. My dealer (Folsom Ford) told me that the scheduled maintenance for the transmission is at 90K. I thought that way too long to wait, so I really appreciate your video. Why is Ford saying that this ATF will last till 90K? Seems that they are intentionally wanting us to ruin our transmission to go to them to get a new one when they do break. Seems odd to me.

Apart from a few notorious vehicles that eventually get lemon lawed and recalled, just about any vehicle can exhibit reliability with regular maintenance and occasional repairs. The real question is how frequent breakdowns are (and every vehicle will breakdown at some point) and how much its going to cost to fix and maintain.

great video, thank you! your attention to detail and clear explanations are fantastic!! much gratitude! I do have a question....in my situation with '20 Edge SEL, the new fluid leaks out of my funnel, when filling. I realize that it is probably me, doing something wrong....I could not pour directly in through the funnel like shown here....there is something down in the rubber fill port on top, that is restricting flow. I had to resort to hand pumping all 5 quarts, which was slow and messy. any thoughts appreciated....

Great video! Does this transmission share its fluid with the front differential or is it a separate component with its own liquid?

Brian, Love the content as it's saved me a ton of money over the years and allowed me to do all kinds of repairs and service by myself. Have a question about this 8F35 transmission and a TSB about it. My wife's 2019 Edge has started shuddering and bucking when accelerating up to about 30-40mph. I found a TSB about that very thing and was wondering if this is something that I have to go to our dealership about or if independent shops can do the work. It requires updating the PCM and solenoid numbers to new software. Have you had any experience with it?

If there's one thing that bothers me, its universal ATFs. I can understand using a different brand engine oil as they are all for the most part formulated to handle all the OEs, but universal ATFs give me the shivers. There are so many different OE specs and requirements to them, and some are even to the point where if you use anything but the OE fluid you will have shifting or shudder concerns (GM 8 speed HP fluid for example). ATF is the one thing that I 100% use the OE fluid on or OE spec fluid that is NOT a universal fits all fluid.

@ ford tech Makuloco, on news about aftermarket parts today, channel Tom Coolen which is kick a mechanic in Canada has been cutting up parts open such as ball joints etc. and finding plastic instead of what i believe was bronze in the parts ??? Three main capital corporations now own most of our once American auto parts main one being Apollo capital on 5th ave, NYC. which now owns Moog and Fel pro. My question is he has also opened ford oem parts from newer vehicles and found the same, are ford truck ball joints made by Dana/Spicer ? and have you noticed any problems by new oem parts ?
