Similar thing happened to me in the twisties recently except the oncoming car wasn’t passing anyone. He was just in my lane coming straight towards me out of a blind curve. My reaction was the same as yours, Greg, although we weren’t going as fast. There was no shoulder so I just got as far to the right as possible and slowed way down. Fortunately, he saw me and got back in his lane. Then, today, someone cut across three lanes through a small gap between two cars, in the lane to my right, and cut me off. I was in the fast lane. Because of your advice, I was aware of them as soon as they changed lanes the first time and predicted they’d keep on coming. They never saw me until they looked in their rear view mirror. Fortunately, I saw them early and slowed down enough to not get hit. You are absolutely right… anything can happen at any time so always be prepared and practice. Thanks for all your videos and advice. By the way, I practice swerving at highway speeds when no one is around me. It’s already saved my life once when some hidden debris suddenly appeared in my lane when the truck ahead of me swerved, at the last second, to avoid hitting it himself.

On the vid above and if you ride the mountain twisties I recommend using just a single finger braking - more forgiving if you're a new rider and you still snatch grab the brake - plus once more experienced you will grow to love the one/single finger braking in the twisties.

Thank you for this! Your videos also have made me a better driver. Always anticipate and assume the worst. For me, sadly, riding isn’t riding. Riding is studying human behavior at high speeds. Great check for any of us on our bikes! I'm actually surprised of the driving habits that I see in the USA. But here in Japan adherence to the rules of the road is amazingly high. And general courtesy and giving way to the other vehicle, like letting someone go before you, is commonplace. But, there are the occasional nuts out there even here. I always have 2 fingers on my brake. When I first started riding this would give me forearm pain but my arm is used to it now. Streets are narrow here and anything can come in my way without much forewarning. Thank you ,motojitsu, for all you do for others!!

Good video!!! I was 9 when my old man put me on a 50cc bike for first time and the only thing he said after showing me the controls was: “you know people are stupid. So I spect you to spect them to do stupid things. Being right won’t bring you back to life. Now go practise and ride around the house every 15 min so I know you’re ok”. I practiced all kinds of things every night when the streets were empty for months until he thought I was ready to ride to school. But I will never forget those words. I don’t like being negative, but assuming everyone out there is always gonna do the right thing is asking for trouble imo.

so downright practical tips from our great riding mentor!❤ many times that happens in our country here in the Philippines thats why we coined the term "KAMOTE" for such kind of drivers..it really pays to have the habit of having your fingers covering on the brake lever then practicing to swerve by consciously counter steering to avoid collisions..i recently have proven that to be effective even if my pace is fast enough..❤

Car pulled out right in front of me as I was in the right lane going through green. Braked but didn't stop on time. By the time I could think any thoughts at all, the bike had already swerved around the car while I was braking. I didn't have time to decide to swerve, it just happened, and to be honest, I don't even know if it was luck or skill, because it was already over before I had time to think anything at all. So I guess that whatever you do on auto-pilot, that's what will happen.

@@46rrodriguez I've swerved before (and remember doing so) but that was in situations where there was more time (where I could choose brake or swerve). But this time, there was so little time that it was already over before I had time to think. It's as though the bike swerved on its own (at least, that's how it felt like). Obviously, I must have pressed the handlebars because bikes don't swerve on their own. I just don't remember doing that. I guess because of previous practice, it just happened on autopilot.

A few weeks ago, i watched a video of yours called "Bought your 1st motorcycle? Do this" and i decided to apply those tips you suggested. Just finished my motorcycle course last week and successfully passed my exam this past Wednesday. First thing i did once home... go practice my stops and turns in a small town nearby with my kawasaki versys-x 300. And this morning, i decided to practice my counter steering everywhere. Very wise + good tips you gave!! Thanks. In order to avoid having to face that challenge as in this video here (as i don't have yet any muscle memory), i have decided to take curves at a much slower speed until i know i can take them a the regular speed. For now, i do as when i was driving big trucks. I take curves according to the posted suggested speed limit yellow signs (made for trucks). Question : if i ever face this situation in a very near future, would releasing the throttle be enough if my speed is below what is posted !? Thanks :)

Had 2 fun interactions yesterday. Had to swerve twice in 1 ride because of a cyclist pulling wide into the road from somewhere where I couldn't see him coming and a car suddenly pulling out of a parked space with no indication. Was quite happy with myself as in both instances I swerved with full control of my bike and without the danger of swerving too wide into oncoming traffic.

This sort of thing happens every day in Bangkok. So let's say I train under real world conditions. Counter-steering, planning a safety cushion, constantly revise escape routes, and keep two fingers on the brake. Never be the first or last across an intersection. Don't get mad at other drivers doing crazy things - accept reality as it is. Bikes here frequently drive against the traffic - it's accepted practice. Red lights are often ignored. Eyes open, expect obstacles, practice correct braking techniques every opportunity.

i try to practice a lot of your drills at least 1 time a week for 1½ hours. and before i go out on a ride i spend 15-20 minutes practicing trailbreaking, emergency breaking, highspeed and low speed maneuvers but when it comes to emergency breaking above 60 mph i always feel nervous and like im gonna crash the bike. This fear makes me not break hard enough fast enough. i feel like om gonna lock up the front tire. How do i overcome this fear?

This is why I never ride close to the centerline, I stay on the outer 3rd of the lane - in general. I’ll take my chances with going off the side of the road as opposed to a head on collision. People drift over that center line when they’re texting .

Correct initial instruction on controlling a street bike is imperative. Braking ,Countersteering, looking and throttle control. In event of near death incidents, you may find you have no recollection of how you avoided an ambulance..as your mind will put your body into autopilot mode. So correct practices are imperative.

Always expect the unexpected from the other driver and be ready to react by taking the path of least resistance ! Stay Alert, Ride Safe ! Also have your clutch and break levers rotated on the handle bars so they are in a very natural position to reach and actuate so breaking will begin with a slight squeeze as well as the friction zone only require a slight squeeze to activate. The same with your rear brake pedal adjust and shift lever adjustments.

Riders do dumb $hit too. I left Brown Field Saturday and on 905 cruising easy the speed limit in the right lane, Mr. Crotch Rocket decides to pass me at +10 mph on my right side. Startled me since he was all of one foot seperation from me. Jerky boy.... well then near downtown on Hwy 5 traffic is backed up going north on 163 and another Jerky Boy in a car decides to change lanes, from a stopped to 50mph where I am. Oh, he left a few feet for me but without a bit of anticipation I would have been splat. Ironically my daydream just minutes earlier was how fortunate I am for having avoided any injury accidents in the 50 years of riding.

Hey, Erik here. A little background… I just got myself an R1300GS this year after many years off from riding. I was a pretty good rider in my days, or so I thought! I’ve been following you for a while and very much like your approach. Two thumps up on that as someone else would say! In any case, I have a thought for you. I would love it if you could offer a “course” on how to be a better rider in an on-line format. Example; course #1… list the step by step setup comes and what not and the still to follow, course#2 and on and on!!! I would totally sign-up and pay for something like this!! Thoughts?
