Great video Don . My lawn tractor battery seems to last so long I barely remember when I bought it. What I do is remove mine And I live very close to Canada and we have long winters here. I remove my battery on one tractor and one car I have for the winter and keep them on the work bench in the garage out of the way. And put a small charger on them until they are fully charged , some people use a trickle charger and leave it on all winter but I just put the charger on once a month it seems to work just fine. And for me this helps my batteries last many years.

Dony you’re the best small engines teacher on KZfaq. I put a battery tender on all my tractors at least once a month. After I take the tender off I measure the voltage on the battery, after a few days I measure it again and if it drops to 12.5vdc. or less I know the battery is on its way out. With proper care for I usually get around six years to a battery unless it’s defective from the start. Thanks again for doing what you do, the younger people need mentors like you.

We leave them in the machines over the winter season (stored in a dry outhouse) I do give them a charge every few weeks, temperatures during winter here in Trøndelag in Norway can go down to -10 to -20'c and sometimes even a bit lower.

I bought one of these testers on eBay for $23 AUD including postage and handling from a seller whose located at Sydney in Australia which isn't that far from where I live. That reading prior to when you turn the switch on is the voltage reading & I knew that it was already toast when I saw that it read 10 volts when the battery has been charged, it's likely due to a bad cell. The instructions in mine tells me to load test it for 10 seconds. It has been invaluable for testing my cars battery so it has saved me from returning a good battery to the auto parts store when the starter motor solenoid had a loose connection in my car. I would like to get a smaller one to test smaller CCA rated batteries because I have a 270 CCA which shows up as being weak but the specific gravity tests green which is fully charged after it has been charged !

If the battery has been around a while (as this one is from Feb 2018), it's a good idea to pry off the vent caps and see if there is enough acid solution in the cells, prior to charging. If the plates are not totally submerged, top up with water until they are..and then charge the battery. You might be able to save it.

I also have one of these old school high current battery load testers. A Harbor Freight one from south of the 49th parallel. Besides our cars I also use it on the smaller SLA batteries on our genie and UPS. Being small batteries even new they test bad but I log the new reading periodically retest. Not rigorous a test but works for me. To maximize life both are on battery maintainers. One note of caution. I once had one of our car batteries fail shortly after I did the load test. I assume a failed cell (know what they say). One of the newer high tech impedance testers may have picked up the pending failure but as I do not own one will never know.

If you will look on your battery it will have a cold cranking amp rating on it. That is what you need to go by on your load tester, thats what the numbers are on the tester and that should be what it should show when you test it. It should be somewhere close to the cca rating on the battery.

Interesting but a cheaper multimeter will achieve the same information. Measure off load voltage 12-13v depending on charge state, then crank the starter and observe voltage drop. Shouldn’t drop below 8.4volts on battery terminals worst case scenario. When batteries had each cell lugs exposed years ago you could easily measure the voltage of each cell which should all read the same. Another good test is to charge the battery fully, then discharge at the 10th ampere rating of the battery to see if its capacity is up to spec. I prefer moving coil meters to electronic test meters.

Sir, this video scared the heck out of me and I'll tell you why. Look at the 3:12 mark and notice how close together the handles of that tester are. Notice too that the insulation on those handles doesn't fully cover the ends and that you're less than an inch from getting a lesson in 12vdc arc welding, or worse. I say "or worse" because back in the 90s, when I owned my own shop, one of my mechanics had just finished charging a battery and used a cheese grater type load tester, similar to the one you have, to load test the battery. All it took was a slight pull on the cables and the ends of the handles touched in a shower of sparks. Bad enough, but that also ignited the hydrogen gas that had built up while charging and exploded the battery, severely injuring the man with the splattering acid. Please, for safety's sake, add some insulation to those clamps and take care that they aren't pointing at each other when testing batteries. I enjoy your channel and would like to see more of your content for many years to come.
