In my time in the Air Force (5 years Army, 17 years Air Force) "Quick effective Shelter" meant the hotel was within walking distance.

JPJohnBo : I Myself, John Rodriguez, was ,and , STILL AM intrigued on how Former Marines and Soldiers were able to successfully Enlist and Serve as Airmen , when, Post- Marine Corps ( 01 July 1991AD, End of Active Service ( EAS) ), I was told by both Marine Corps SNCOs that the Air Force NEVER, EVER took in Former Marines and Soldiers.

I use to sleep like that in Vietnam wearing my poncho with a slight change. My weapon was in my hands underneath the poncho. No way am I leaving it on the ground, good weather or bad.

This is the most "Infantry" thing I've seen so far, most of the times you have 10 to 30 minutes to rest so no time to waste, this method is always the go to that every folks in the unit used. I've lost count of how many times I've had sleeping system on me and never used it. Stay strong soldiers💪💪 by an Italian infantry man!

Literally just happened to me lol. I was too tired to set up my sleep system so the mat and clothes on me worked good ish... 1.5 hrs of sleep later then back to security and patrol work.

I rarely pulled out my poncho, just slept where I could with the best cover and or concealment. The poncho is great if time permits. We were taught to ground our rucks. I used the kidney pad as a pillow and wrapped in a woobie sometimes with a poncho. I have since learned to carry my bivy with me and a poncho so I can have a little more comfort.

That's a really good idea! The pads of my backpacker freaking comfortable as hell when I sat down like that before hunting or backpacking, I never thought about draping a military poncho over me in the rain I had some ultra light rain gear and I always had an umbrella haha this is definitely more tactical. The umbrella was just for when we would stop for a rest or something and it started pouring rain you could pop it in the top of your bag between your back in the bag and be covered while you sit and rest. This is better tho lol

Love my poncho! I have my woodland camo from the 80’s, was lucky enough to find a surplus one for $20. New ones seem to be unobtainable and/or ultra expensive. I re-waterproofed both and they are rock solid. Love me a poncho! Swagman too!

My get home shelter is a poncho “And a head-bug net (Florida)” for some reason the prepping community thinks you have to lay down to sleep. I appreciate someone willing to address the reality of sleeping against a tree in your poncho 👍 I haven’t had to do it in 30 years but if I can’t sleep then I just move till I can sleep 👍 also definitely going to check out the siting pad 😁👍

I thought, “Ooh, new type of shelter! Wonder what it could be?” Then, as it started, I thought, “Oh. I bet he’s going to put a poncho on, sit down, and call it a shelter, isn’t he?” Is it April 1st, cos you got me!😂

Back in the day, used to do something very similar in the jungle with the old Parka, Wet Weather. We would go to Clothing Sales and get the biggest parka they had in stock. On a halt, would just do the rucksack flop and put the parka on. Just like a little, one-man tent. Easier to move and fight with the parka on rather than a poncho. JMHO

I guess people never thought about this, we did. When your stuck on a flightline in the dead of winter, a ponch with a woobie was our gtg, besides our uniform an insulated feild jacket, more layers the better in my book. Thx for the vid Bro

I see a lot of commenters have some far out plans. Simple is best, I’ve used pretty much your same style of “shelter” when hunting and the weather got bad short term. The pack against the tree is a lot more comfortable than tree bark. Still want to try the candle idea but haven’t yet.

Placing chemical hand/feet warmers under your arm pits or between your legs works well and won't set you on fire! MRE heaters will work as well but add a lot of moisture to your little shelter!

I carry a 3-4 person " instant tent" that I throw in the air, and when it lands, it is set up. This tent weighs less than 3 pounds and is a 4 season tent. I carry tarps, but they are used as a buffer between the ground and the floor of my tent . It just doesn't make much sense NOT to carry one

Don't even bother taking your weapon off if you're alone while doing this honestly. It's not gonna increase the signature of the poncho at all, and better not to leave it on the ground if it's wet. Also instead of trying to tuck the poncho I just wear a hair tie on my wrist I could tie it up with. I already have hair long enough that I'd need to tie it up so carrying an extra tie isn't unrealistic

Procedure: find bear cave, evict bear(s), build fire.....Support: make sure eviction notice is properly filled-out, filed, and in waterproof container as well as, served. Result/expectation: the bear(s) become new/real enemies combatant thereby confusing previous enemies. Source: Fung Shui ( or new English version 'art of war'...Sun Zues)....Caution: beware of triangles in the wilderness 😊 😎
