Good job man. Grease is preferable to oil on bushings for longevity. You are correct some lubricant is better than none. Ideally if you can find bearings that fit for both ends of machine you would be golden. Bushings are a cheap way out for this type of equipment. Great find. I just acquired a craftsmen 6”x48 with 9” disc for 50$ All cast iron bed and and stand. It’s a beast from the 70s. I will be going through the whole unit before putting to full time use. It runs well but needs new switch and wiring first order of business. That’s no problem for me but the last guy made a death machine wiring job lol.

thanks, I've got a British version of this! Same problem, just about to take it apart and your video is really helpful, thanks for sharing. Just completed my service and on my machine (called 'Perform'). Removing the roller alignment stud (3:10) is a bit more tricky as there's a butterfly nut on the stud. To remove the stud in order to remove the roller, you have to wind on an additional nut, tighten the two against each other and then the stud can be wound out.

I just bought a mastercraft belt/disc sander. And the first try it worked great. 2nd time turning it on. It made this exact humming noise. No movement. It has proper power voltage plugged in. I'm guessing it's faulty right out of the box

Yeah that’s quite possible. They don’t make things very well anymore.

Same sander, had for over 20 years. Needs the same cleanup on it, but was well worth buying.

Rather surprised that bushings were used for that. Specially considering the load. I would assume that the original instructions would mention regular oiling.

@george curtis- I agree, bearings would have been nice.

Those are bronze oil impregnated bushings. Need thin oil.

I'm young in the DIY game but would some valve grinding compound on the rod help them bushings enough? If the drum was spun on the rod or vise versa
@Casey_Schmidt
@Casey_Schmidt Жыл бұрын
Yes and no. There a millions ways to fix something and if valve grinding compound is what you have on hand, then that’s what you use. On the other hand, when using abrasives (especially liquid abrasives) it is very important to make sure it is thoroughly removed from any moving part otherwise they’ll continue to wear.

I greased the shaft on my top bearing and oil the bore then reassemble them and have had no trouble since however I like your model better than my model my model is 315 .25 1140 when you mind stating your model number in the comments

I have a similar sander and the belt is slightly tilted to the right which is causing it to grind more on one side any tips to correct this issue. Thanks

Adjust the tracking with the tracking screw. Just tighten or loosen the screw until the belt is centered.

Great video Casey, just one question though. How do you get the disk sander off? My disc sander side does not spin with the motor. I have removed the allen screw that retained it on the shaft but I am unable to get the aluminum disk backing off of the shaft to see what is going on behind the disk. Thanks for any help you might be able to offer.

I’m really not sure. I never took that part of it apart, sorry!

I finally figured out a way to slide a flat tip screwdriver in behind the aluminum disc and managed to pry it loose and slide it off then.

Both spinners are spinning fine by hand. When I turn mine on there is a low hum but it does not seem to have as much power as yours. Any suggestions?

Could be a problem with the motor or the bearings in the motor.

I got this sander from my mom who got it from her dad and the thing works great. Until today when the belt broke so the top sander doesn't spin. Did you ever find a website to get parts?
@Casey_Schmidt

Nope. No parts were required for my fix. Just clean and relube.

Hmm I found exact model sander you have same price too and its fully working ....how do you like sander any negatives ,im thinking of buying it but usually dont buy craftsmen Im suspect about the brand after buying a few and having to return .My wifes brother lives in Japan so get most of tools from out there , they are extremely well made definitely worth paying extra for shipping imo.

@Neva Woke - In my opinion, if you’re only using it occasionally, it’s perfectly fine and you can save some money. But if you use it quite frequently, pay for the better quality machine. That said, this one does feel well built for Craftsman standards; very heavy and sturdy.
