DIYNate shows a very simple fix for this common problem with step / pedal trash cans and uses zip ties to secure the lid to the back of his stainless steel "Simple Human" trash can.

In this video, DIYNate shows a solve he used a few years back on his stainless steel indoor Simple Human brand trash can when the lid kept popping off. The plastic joint / hinge in the back had worn out and the lever arm was no longer correctly connected to the base of the trash can. DIYNate simply drilled a few small holes into the three joint areas and then ran small zip ties through those holes.
This solution has worked for several years, and finally, one of the zip ties broke and needed to be replaced. DIYNate went ahead and replaced the zip tie and recorded this video in the hopes of helping some people solve their step / pop-up trash can lid problems. While pop-up / touch-free / easy step trash cans are great, this can be one of the top nuisances that leads people to want to t replace their trash can. This simple fix may just keep you from needing to buy a new trash can and hopefully save you some frustration and money!

Thank you so much for this video! It's not so much as saving money for me, it's about not having to create more waste with this big hunk of metal and plastic just because one little piece is broken.

Brittany - I love your attitude on that. I am the same way - I hate throwing a big, bulky, almost perfectly good item away, knowing it is going to end up in a landfill when it still has many years of useful life. This one is almost comical in that regard - throwing away a broken trashcan feels like something that should never happen (what trash can do you put a broken trash can in?). Thanks for your comment and appreciate your efforts to keep things in use vs. creating waste! - DIYNate

@DIYNate 3 ай бұрын
Sorry about not zooming in or giving a better picture of where to drill the holes. It kind of depends where the plastic broke and really, you probably can’t go wrong with where you put the holes and zip ties as long as you think about it from a hinge function or support. Good luck and will try and do better in explaining and showing in future videos. Thanks for your comment - it is appreciated! Best, DIYNate

@DIYNate

Sorry about not having a better close-up for you. I basically put the holes in the two bracket areas that clamp on the trashcan on the side and also one in the bracket in the dead center that wraps around the metal rod that is used to lift the lid. Holes were directly in from front to back of the can and fed the zip ties through them and then secured. Hope that helps and thanks for watching! Sorry again for not having a better closeup - working to make my videos better as I create more. - DIYNate

I have a different issue. My lid goes up fine with the pedal, but does not come back down. I have to push it down. Do you have a fix for this?
@DIYNate
@DIYNate 11 ай бұрын
That sounds a bit tricky but most likely, there is something disrupting the return flow - gravity should bring it back down but if the can hinges aren’t correctly seated or the metal post isn’t catching on the ‘backswing’ correctly, you may want to see if you can figure out what is causing the gravity motion not to work. One other somewhat obvious thing - look to make sure no gunk or debris is caught in the hinges. Good luck on the fix! - DIYNate

I have the opposite problem. Mine won’t close all the way.
@DIYNate
@DIYNate 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure I have a solution for that one but hope you were able to get it solved. My guess is it may be an issue with the post that lifts the lid, the side clamps needing to be pushed down all the way, or possibly a piece of trash stuck somewhere along the lip / back edge causing the closing mechanism not to let it go down all the way. Good luck with the fix! - DIYNate

I have a simple trash can. My Indians broke. The lid is just taking a lot longer to soft close. I tried cleaning as much of the trash can as I can. I can’t figure out what is causing the hesitation.
@DIYNate
@DIYNate 8 ай бұрын
I think you are taking the right approach - cleaning around the top areas and hinges, but maybe even trying to clean around the pedal and on the inside where the rod is may be helpful. Maybe take out the liner / black inner shell and see if it closes faster when that is out - may help you in diagnosing why the slow close problem. Good luck and hope you get it fixed! - DIYNate
