QUICK GIFT: Dining Scarf (or Bib! Or STOLE!) Sewing Tutorial🧣

2 жыл бұрынBy viewer request, this dining scarf (or rather, STOLE 💅🏽) is easy to make and great for gift giving! Get a jump on the holidays, and get back to sewing fun stuff. Like, evening gowns.

📐 Measurements:
2 rectangles, 9 x 45 inches (33 x 114 cm). Longer if you like!
Mark neck pleat stitch line on center of fabric, 1 1/2 inches (4 cm) away from scarf edge, and 1 inch (2.5 cm) long
Place closures 2 inches (5 cm) away from scarf edge, and 12 1/2 inches (32 cm) down from center “neck” line (adjust to your preference).
🧵 Supplies:
Double Wide Bias Tape (mine is “Berry Sorbet”, link below!)
1/2 yard each of 2 contrasting cotton fabrics, at least 45 inches wide (quilting cotton works great, but you can make a longer scarf if you’re using 60 inch wide fabric)
Large hook and eye, snap, or velcro dots
Cotton prints used were purchased @joannstores

this is the same reason i was looking for this tutorial. Mom had a stroke 2 years ago and everything just slips out the right side of her mouth. being right handed she is having a hard time getting used to holding things and functioning with her left. I hope your mom is doing alright and you have help caring for her.

My mom was an amazing sewer since she was a young girl. I LOVED this video. You two are SUNSHINE!! Now that mom has dementia she could use a dining stole but I never learned to sew. After watching your tutorial I believe I can do it. I’m not scared!! I’m going to Joann!! I’m AM!! I’m making these for her, for me, for all of the people!!!

Oh my goodness! I will be making these for both of my parents! They live in a nursing home and they put bibs on them. I know it is to protect their clothes, but it is so undignified. I hate to see them wearing a bib. This is a perfect solution and it will leave them with their dignity intact. I can’t thank you enough for this wonderful project. Now, kick back and relax a little bit before you have to return to the city.

This dining scarf might be great for me and my hubby when we get food from the drive through and eat in the car. In spring and summer we find a picnic spot but in winter we eat in the car. Eating in the car can be tricky!

Fun video. Love the dinning stole. Also, love that you use your sweet Featherweight machine. I'm a FW girl too. In fact I have 3 of them. One I've had since 1955. Bought to make my maternity clothes while expecting my first born. They didn't make petite clothes back then for us under 5 footers. LOL

Marcy, thanks for the wonderful humour you three brought to our Saturday afternoon (before we meet up with friends for our supper club soiree), and the easy steps for your mother-in-law's stole. My idea for step 19 - since I work in a hospital - how about a Velcro closure for those with less dexterity? I didn't have enough time to zip up some 'stoles' for our evening as I’ve been baking my first ever pumpkin pie (I usually make soup 😂) and a spiced apple and almond topped crumble, being accompanied by cream and custard and of course a bottle of vino. I love the ozarks!!! Mountain View is like my 3rd home. My uncle lives there and plays the fiddle with the band at the ozark folk center. His name is Billy Wayne. Thank you so much for your video. I made one out of satin for my soon-to-be daughter-in-law's wedding dress. They are having Italian and she was concerned about getting something on her dress. Love this idea, great for eating or making it out of heavier fabric for cold weather. Looking at all the patterns in the room you shoot this in, your mother-in-law must love different colors and patterns together. I bet you two get along like two peas in a pod. After the first time serving spaghetti to the bridge club mom made enough spaghetti bibs for all of them for the next time.. They were a big hit! I just leave my doom by apron on. Don't need it to cook, just to eat!

I made one for my mom. I use a 100% cotton as the main fabric. I found a cheap towel set at the grocery store for $5.99 . And use that for the back. I wanted to have a little bit of weight to it. Even with the Terry cloth fabric I was able to put the binding on no problems! My mom goes on outings ton outings to restaurant with arsenior club. Now she won't be messy! 😁 I really enjoy your videos! Thanks!

I love the magnet idea, for those with less mobility that would be so much easier!

@@thehandmadeharriells I made a hooded cowl out of black crushed velvet, but I dont like pulling things over my head like you would have to do with a medieval type cowl. So I made a split in the drape part in the front, but I didn't want to fuss with hooks and eyes, toggles and loops or buttons and button holes. I chose to get earth magnets, but they are very strong for their size and they tend to slam together. I made little envelopes out of small squares of felt and put a magnet into each of them, I made 6 total. I then placed these wrapped magnets inside of the wide seam allowance making a placket on each side of the opening of the cowl (like a shirt placket). You have to test the magnets to see if the left will stick to the right or repel each other. This might take a little fiddling. Once the magnets are all facing the right way, sew down the placket and above and below each magnet so each one is secured in it's own pocket. With my crushed velvet, you cant even see the magnets at all, not even the stitching around each one. I hand stitched almost the whole cowl. With the magnets wrapped in felt and velvet, they do still stick together well, but they dont slam hard together and they're much easier to pull apart when I want to remove the cowl. If you ever use magnets, I suggest hand washing the finished item because it could stick to the sides of the washing machine or dryer. I do not know if they will ever rust or discolor from washing.

@@thehandmadeharriells Hello! They are almost like quilted hot pads, but 3 dimensional and they’re used for keeping a bowl of something hot or cold. Like soup or ice cream. I’ve thought of making them for Christmas gifts and I love your explanation on your sewing projects so I was looking to see if you had such a tutorial.

If you've ever hefted a cast iron table model, it's a noticeable difference! Probably half the weight or more since the Featherweight is cast aluminum instead. I'd love to get one but hubby says I can't collect any more, lol. Just scored a 1961 Rocketeer, so I'll have to make do with that one!

Thank you so much for this! I'm always dropping food down my shirt and I don't really want to wear a traditional bib so this is perfect for me! I just have to make a matching lap cover/giant napkin to keep my skirts clean. Maybe a half apron? Nah, too much work.

I love your eyes too! I sent the tip of my sewing machine needle flying once. The pin survived, just a little bent out of shape! I am extra careful now. Love this, my friends mother lives in a personal care home and I wanted to make her a clothing protector (that’s what they call adult bibs). My attempt ended up being waaaay to big around the neck and heavy! This is perfect and easy!

Yikes! Yeah, that happened to me once and the needle tip flew and hit my face about an inch below my eye. That sealed the deal for me 😅 These end up very light and comfy around the neck, I hope you try it!

I absolutely love this video and am going to use the phrase "Dining Stole" (or Dining Scarves). It sounds so much more elegant than Adult Bib! I am chesty and am tired of staining my tops (It's always with the worst foods: oil, tomato sauce, etc). I can certainly wear a dining stole and know a few people who might appreciate one. I can even monogram them on my embroidery machine! Thank you for the entertaining video and the idea!

Fun as usual, even if it was sewing sonething "practical-ish" (I'm with you when it comes to wanting to sew something more than a curved square;). Honestly, this could be useful for many and these instructions allow for lots of variation and batch production which, just as for masks, is useful for items that get used and washed often! Thanks... getting ideas for my father-in-law and his retirement home!

How much more yardage/inches should be added if the wearer is "chestier" or "fuller figured" than the 45in and 9in suggested in the tutorial? Great tutorial.

Hi Jessica, sorry I missed this! It all depends on how chesty/tall/wide your person is…i would say add more than you think you need on both width and length, and cut just one panel. Then pinch it at the center back “neck” and try it on. If it feels too bulky around the neck or ends up too wide or long, you can always trim away-then use than panel to cut the other panel, and sew & bind. For reference, Rob’s a 40 chest and I’m a 35, and we’re both wearing the tutorial measurements 💗

Hiii! These earrings, right? They’re my favorites for these videos. They were crazy cheap, I think I found them in Times Square, pre pandemic, in some fast fashion shop 😔. I couldn’t resist them. I’m actually on the hunt for a quality pair, I wonder how long these will last!

Methinks perhaps the textile choices should be a bit fancier to be called a stole. Something with a beautiful (replica) WAX PRINT perhaps? 😁 And maybe a thinner gold bias tape for some glam. Regardless, you certainly had the best machine to sew this project up on! Is that Mama Harriell's amazing antique? I love it!! Hope you two had a great evening out, and that Rob's birthday is a great one!

I have some beautiful material I’d like to make some of these dining “stoles”! Problem is, they are only 40” long! How can I make them longer?

Hi Cindy! You could always use a contrasting/complementary piece of fabric for the center back, essentially lengthening the rectangle in the behind-the-neck area, which won’t be seen as much as the front. Just cut your material in two 20 inch lengths, then add that other rectangle to the center. Or if your main fabric is wide enough, you could use that for the insert!

Good on you collectively Dear Harriells. Well done, as always. As a, um, rather busty girl (38FF) I think my life is in need of a bunch of these. Nothing, just nothing, falls straight into my lap. Le Sigh. A moment for stash bragging - The Village of Value just delivered unto me someone's WOOL de-stash-ing. Haven't done a burn test, but everything is at least 60% wool. Who does this? Who? Thank you collective Sewing Gods! Potentially hundreds of dollars of wool fabric for about 100 bucks with a 20% off certificate. Wha... Also - if you manage to win like this at the second-hand-shop, go back the next day for the re-stocked rack. It took me from a fancy as f7*# pencil skirt (because I'm going to try welt pockets And I think there's enough for my first attempt at pattern matching). When I went back there was the same amount of the same fabric. So I'm now making a 1950's-style Chanel suit jacket. Tailoring. Gulp. Prayers and good thought welcome... So, on the docket for a winter wardrobe: - a shall/scarf, a circle skirt, a pencil skirt, the fancy as **&$# pencil skirt (and matching jacket - squee!), a 1950's fitted jacket with a lovely huge flaired collar, an 1890's walking skirt, some sort of blazer in grey checked suiting and some sort of something in butter yellow material. Wool. It will all be in Wool. And I'm in Canada. Winter is coming. Everything is getting lined in contrasting fabric. Whee... Enjoy the travel. Nice to see Mom-in-law's Featherweight again. And, if you shop on Tuesdays, and have a bit of white in your hair, and you shop at the same time in the work-shift-cycle so you start to know the staff... if they ask you if you are a senior, you say Yes, Mam.. And yeah, this whole thing kind of makes me feel like I have a horseshoe comfortably fitting up me bum. Who. De-stash's. Wool. Like seriously, some of this stuff has to come from Britain

Great idea! even for the grandkids ... spaghetti is so 'dangerous' .. I may make some big kid options ( and some adult ones too) for special holidays when everyone is dressed a bit fancy. I wonder if this would be a good wedding shower gift for the bride... a fancy one with embroidery etc. for those times when she actually gets to eat :D. Also I love your featherweight - is that your treasure or your wonderful MIL's?
