We take a shorter look at the more efficient Lexus LC500h. This hybrid may not be as green as a plug or EV but offers a look at newer technology. While this car is over 100k there may be some reasons to consider it over the German rivals. There is plenty of technical information and more in this review.

I read somewhere that the hybrid gives you something like 600-700 mile range... That’s insane for a “sports” car! This isn’t a track car. This is for that long Weekend drive while looking cooler than anyone else on the road. I love it!

I see plenty of retired professionals with thick wallets doing lots of cruising. This hybrid would be amazing for the the mountain road trip. It is impossible to use the V8 on public roads anyway, 3.5l V6 is strong enough in this car and electrical motor just smoothens the engine at full throttle and works magic in the city. Only seen it few time so far in Japan but lexus does very good in here. Great cars.
@louislazarus2734
@louislazarus2734 5 жыл бұрын
This guy is a really good reviewer! The Hybrid is the way to go for sensible people who want a REALLY, REALLY, REALLY NICE CAR. The V8 is for people who think they are professional race car drivers turned loose on the public roads to terrorize everyone. I've got the 2018 V8 and if I had to do it all over again, the Hybrid would have been my choice. Yes, it's really fun to have the power and sound of that V8 but 99% of the time I'm just driving from here to there and enjoying the comfort and quality of the car. That's the realistic part of the equation. Guys who want race cars should be buying those 600-800 horsepower supercars from Germany, Italy and of course Chevrolet. They will probably wind up killing themselves or some other people chasing their fantasies and not having the good sense to remember the roads are public highways and not race tracks. I've been driving a 435 h.p. 1969 Corvette since 1970. It's been my daily driver for all these years. As a younger guy I definitely did stupid stuff but as you get older, you just grow up, mature (a bit) and just want to "get there safely". I understand youth and now I'm getting to understand old age. The LC 500 is NOT A RACE CAR. Don't buy one for that reason. It is arguably the nicest car available today....especially for the money. Unlike those other cars, this one will spend very little time in the shop being repaired and when it needs something, it won't cost an arm and a leg to get the part. I would encourage anyone who is interested in buying a wonderful automobile to go test drive both versions of the LC 500. You will fall in love. If you decide to buy one, the choice is relatively easy as long as you are honest with yourself. I succumbed to the fantasy. I love my car but would definitely get the Hybrid if given the opportunity to choose again.

This car speaks to me, especially with the hybrid drivetrain. I don’t think I will ever buy a new car that sells for $100k but I’m in love with the idea of a car this fast that can get such high mpg and still have Toyota/Lexus reliability. If a more affordable car had this drivetrain I’d buy it. Maybe that’s where Toyota is heading with their sports cars in the next 10 years.

Whether you go for the V-8 or the H is up to you. I would suggest they are both fantastic but here's the real point. If you can find a better car, then go buy it. You can find faster cars. You can find more expensive cars. You can find more fuel economical cars. There are a lot of cars that do one particular thing pretty well but the LC 500 does EVERYTHING REALLY, REALLY, REALLY WELL. It is beautiful. It is fast enough. It handles great. It is comfortable. It is safe. And, it is extremely reliable. I've had my 2018 V-8 LC 500 for just over four years now. It's been a PERFECT CAR. I wouldn't change one single thing about it. Once you learn VOICE COMMAND, you will almost never have to use the trackpad which makes the car much safer than those very dangerous TOUCH SCREENS. So again, if you can find a better car, then go buy it.

Great review. I'm picking up my LC today. It was a hard choice. I looked at the Maserati GT, used 911 turbo and a used Ferrari California. The California and the Maserati were the two best for me. Both had a naturally aspirated 457hp engine and in the case of the Ferrari, the power to weight ratio along with everything else just made it the clear winner, despite being a 9 year old car. I was deeply disappointed in the 2008 911 Turbo. That turbo lag was horrific and hit really didn't handle as well around corners as I thought it should. I ended up on the LC. I thought it had a good compromise with what I wanted. I want reliability and I'm willing to sacrifice the performance more. I've been a long term Lexus owner. I can recommend the Maserati and Ferrari California if you want a fast and sexy car that may not be as reliable.

Fantastic review as always, thank you. I am looking at ordering an LC 500. First, I have to have the V8, but my question for you is the wheel size. In your driving of both LCs, do you think the 20" wheel helps with the ride over the 21"? My dealer has one car to test drive, and it has the 21" wheels. We plan to get the car in blue with the tan interior. In owning many different cars in over a 50 year span time, the interior is the one of the finest, cut and stitched materials I have seen.

Even though I´m German myself, I have to agree. BMWs are made of cheap materials like plastic, therefore they break down all the time and Audis are nothing special unless we´re talking about top-of-the-line models like the A7/A8/RSx, yet they cost a fortune. Mercedes Benz are kind of the sweet spot. They´re not too unreliable, they look really good and they feature a substantial and usable amount of tech without breaking your bank too hard. Porsches on the other hand, are made of quality materials, they´re reliable, worth the money and pure driving machines. Still, it´s JDM over everything for me.

Bought my 500h last year and still loving the car. The only problem I have come across is with the gearing, sometimes it simply loses the plot and especially when I want to play. Not too much of a biggy for me, but can be annoying. I've no problem with the soundtrack, but if it could be turned off at will, I'd be okay with that. As a package, I just adore the car and the presence it brings to the road. Frankly, I do not believe there is a better looking car currently on the market and one that oozes far more quality than cars costing 2 maybe 3 times as much.

A very fine review, both in thoughts and opinions, and visually as filmed. A beautiful car for sure, my thoughts are the 'rhythmic gear change' and synth' engine is pure Gran Turismo video game influenced, very artificial. Cars of this quality should be quiet, or at least have that option when the sound is basically a V6 ringtone..

Most car enthusiasts (like myself), think that for a car to be good it should have a v8, good sounds and HP+trq and we bash on Toyota for doing the opposite. But you know what? Those guys at Toyota knows exactly what the majority wants - quiet, smooth, dull and good mpg. That's why they have been selling cars by the millions! I have a modified BMW 335i and a tuned Lexus IS350 with swapped 2JZ and everyone in my family hates those because they are noisy and stiff. They said, it's hard to drive. They said they would never trade their their Audi A4, Toyota Camry and Corolla for my cars.

While the 5.0L V8 is probably the driver's choice, for the luxury GT mission the LC is trying to get at, I actually pick the hybrid version as the better car. It won't be as fun to push hard & there's no eargasm when you prod the gas pedal, but this is the quieter version thanks to the EV mode operation & you'll be stopping much less for fuel.

Fair as always, with a clear position for the hybrid version why to buy, enjoy and drive it. Good that Lexus improved the ride quality with current versions. But the weird desk-vacuum-cleaner like sound inside is so horrible!!! thanks you pointed this out again at the end.

Mr. Goose. Thank you for all that you give us. I bought a GT350 in January, in part do to the overall high remarks you had about it. I'm thinking when I'm done paying it off, I'll be in the market for a used LC500 V8. Obviously they're in different categories and price points, but I'm hoping the luxury vehicle depreciation will hit this car hard!!! That, any I don't see many people buying them since it's such an outlier in the Lexus lineup. How do you see this car holding value in the future?

Excellent detailed and thorough review! I'd probably get the V8 over the hybrid. I've driven both and the V8 is a better Driving Experience. The hybrid costs a little more and wasn't as fun.

As more and more vehicles are made as EVs, I think the hybrid LC will fit right in. I'm wondering if the LC turns into a full EV - faster than the V8 and no more oil changes and smog checks. That will be tempting.

iMANTlS ... It all depends on where you live. I see tons of these all over Tampa and New Tampa , Florida. The v8 would be my pick, but I can really see the why people would go for the Hybrid. I was a tech for Lexus in the early 2000s and their "Synergy" drive system is leap years ahead of the other competition, reliability wise.

@ zbigniewzapora; Depends, warranty still might be around, or if it's Lexus Certified it'll be good for a few more years. Highly unlikely that this car will have any problems outside of warranty...

John-Michael Shaw What happened? Watching this, noticed he did not say anything negative on the hybrid or the other electronics, which sounded odd. Anyway great review and this car has awesome color indeed.

Great review Interesting car no doubt about it, if I was to buy one I'd get the V8. I think manufacturer's need to do a rethink on ride comfort in urban settings instead of sacrificing it for outright performance. I think personally tyre sizes and wheels have gone too far.

I actually like this more with the smaller wheels. Might just be the design as a whole but I think they look better with the overall car design.

I hope Lexus does hybrid sports cars instead of forced induction. For example instead of twin turbo V8(m5, e63s), rear wheel drive V8 with 2 hybrid motors in the front
@Trussme96

They are working on turbo v6s and turbo v8s for their F-Sport models. A hybrid setup with extra motors and batteries is simply too heavy for sporty driving unless you make the entire body carbon fiber which would be far too expensive.

From what you are saying, I think the Infiniti Direct Response Hybrid is a much less irritating and more sporting architecture. I absolutelutely love my Q50, but I think this system will be more succesful, just because it is bolted on a LC500. But the price tag is nearly i8 territory and having driven that car around Oulton Park, it is just mega.
