Tamiya Extra Thin (TET) is a mainstay in the hobby, but one of the annoyances is the cap brush that can't seem to reach the dregs when the bottle starts to run low. Here's an insanely, headsmackingly simple tip to address that.

If you turn the cap upside down, you can temporarily cap the bottle with it to stop fumes, you can also mix your own from acetone and butyl acetate (model airplane dope thinner) to a 1:1 mix. Same thing.

I have a kanban system on Tamiya Extra Thin. When I am down to one bottle, I order another. When the first reaches its end of life, I tip the dregs into the next bottle.

Hidden treasure indeed. I usually use low bottles of Extra Thin and mix them with low bottles of Tamiya Orange - end up with a Tamiya Testors. But, perhaps I'm dreaming this and have a secret desire to keep model companies happy, but I think cement works a little better new. I think this is certainly true with CA. If I do a ship I use a lot of Aleene's Tacky (sweet PVA) and new bottles are tackier. Since observing this I've been thinking about effect when I open a new Tamiya - think that's better too. Not a huge difference, but better. The stuff is cheap.

Really cool feature for Tamiya to include, be it intentional or just a by-product of the design. I tend to use a dedicated 00-sized brush for TET and remove the included brush from the cap, though.

Hi @mosokaiser - what type of brush do you use and how do you stop the bristles gluing together?
@MosoKaiser
@MosoKaiser 11 ай бұрын
@@the_zombie_ritual897 Some type of natural hair (important, won't melt with solvent exposure) size 00 brush that I relegated to liquid cement duties after losing its ability to keep a fine point but still being perfectly good for cemen application. Bristles gluing together is not an issue with liquid cement like Tamiya Extra Thin, since those are essentially nothing but solvent so it alone won't stick bristles together, and whatever miniscule amounts of styrene the brush might pick up when used, potentially causing some stiffening, is instantly liquified when dipped in the cement again.

What I did, I removed the brush in the cap and I use a dedicated normal fine brush for glueing. That way you can always get in the bottle. The brush might harden out if you don't use it for a while, but when you use it again let it sit in the bottle for a little bit and the brush will be usable again.

@@the_zombie_ritual897 hi, it's a regular cheap synthetic brush. The funny thing is after you use it, it becomes rock hard, next time you use it, first you put it in the tamiya extra thin and voila the brush becomes soft again. 👍 i hope it helps.

You don't need to pull the tip out using pliers. You can just pull the whole brush shaft out of the cap using your fingers and then just press it back in just not as far doing the same thing. I started doing that with the Testors Liquid Cement oh those many years ago. I just thought everybody already knew how to solve this problem. Just goes to show that what you know doesn't mean that everyone else knows it too.

@DoogsModels
@DoogsModels 11 ай бұрын
it doesn't "stick". Glue is actually a terrible name for it. It's more of a chemical welder. It melts styrene and then as it evaporates out the styrene cures "welded" together. Need to move relatively fast though as it evaporates quickly. If you can already get the two parts together and let capillary action pull it down the join, that's the ideal way to go.

Or as I recently found out Lacquer thinner works the same as Tamiya extra thin cement. I would bet that Tamiya extra thin cements is actually lacquer thinner. Lacquer is a very chemically hot solvent that melts plastic. So for the price of a quart of lacquer thinner you could buy 20 bottles of the extra thin cement. Just keep topping off your bottle. I love finding cheaper alternative model building products. People are paying way too much for brand name products. Work cheaper and buy more models. But I like your tip of lengthening the brush Thanks

Caveat - I'm not a doctor. But my understanding is that, at commercial/professional exposure levels, that's where the risk exists. Obviously don't drink the stuff or use it as a lotion. But having a small pot on your desk and using it reasonably, the risks are minimal.

I do 95% of my work in a garage, with the door opened, with airflow coming from behind me so I rarely have any concerns about ventilation.
