If you're looking for some straight-up advice on getting a better hold on your AR-15, this Quick Tip is for you! There's a bewildering array of handguard-mounted vertical grips and hand stops on the market today. Fortunately, Brownells Gun Tech™ Caleb has a firm grasp on the topic and is here to help! A simple, Old School clamp-on foregrip, like the Knight's Armament vertical grip, is meant to be grasped by your entire support hand. A variation on the full-length vertical grip is the massive Grip Pod, which has quick-deploy BIPOD legs inside. Magpul and Bravo Company offer short vertical grips that have become extremely popular. They are less bulky, and because most folks use a vertical grip more like a hand stop, not wrapping your full hand around the grip isn't a handicap. A short vertical grip provides another practical benefit, which Caleb explains for us. A HANDSTOP helps you grasp the handguard and pull the rifle back into your shoulder for a secure hold. Magpul offers two hand stops, the very low-profile XTM and the larger Vertical Fore Grip. The VFG really combines the functions of a hand stop with a short vertical grip. A BARRICADE STOP, like the Noveske K9, lets you steady the rifle by bracing the forend against a wall, fence, or similar structure.
So how do these devices work in real life? Caleb's got a coupla AR-15s, and he demos several of these products for us. (He tends to like a vertical foregrip on a shorter handguard and a hand stop on a longer 'guard.) Bottom line: the "best" vertical grip or hand stop is the one the feels best to you.

Remember to consider the legal ramifications of adding foregrips to AR pistols, which have barrels shorter than 16". Caleb's 13.7" gun here is a short barreled rifle (SBR) with a rifle stock, so it's legal for him to add a vertical foregrip. Repeal the NFA and abolish the ATF.

Went on an adventure of foregrips, I've tried them all. VFGs, AFGs, Handstops. found I liked them all just fine, but now I'm running none at all as I find it easier to carry around my rifle without a giant obstruction on the end and allows me to shit around my grip easier. So now I'm running plain Magpul mlok rail covers

I remember buying the original Magpul AFG in 2010. It made handling my M4 a lot better than fighting with the GripPod that was issued with it. Slowly working towards cloning that rifle, priority is on finishing the Mk.12 Mod.0 though.

Many people load-out to what they were trained. I learned on the magwell hold, despite using a full-length M-16. It gave one hell of a barrel swing, but it's what I know. I picked up a vertical magwell grip from MFT, I think it was. It lets me keep the familiar grip point I know and keeps me from accidentally torqueing a magazine out of alignment. It also has a pair of recesses for remote switches. This has the added benefit of leaving plenty of room for my Harris bipod without hanging it out past the muzzle.

I didn’t like it at 1st, but I’m a fan of that vertical & hand stop grip on that 13.7 You get perfect hand placement and using the C grip/clamp allows you to control the barrel, which helps get your sights back on target faster after each shot. I understand that style of grip/clamp isn’t for everyone and I’m not sure if your thumb would get in the way of the LPVO, but I really do like that set up!

My wife's IWI X95 has proven to be a unique contender when shopping for foregrips. In case you are unaware, the stock handguards are removeable on the X95 which leaves you with a picatinny rail underneath. Although the included pic rails are rather short which has made for some interesting options. Currently we are experimenting with the Magpul RVG but I also have two versions of angled foregrips on the way as well. Both the Magpul AFG and AFG-2. However, like most women, she does not like the feel of a picatinny rail on her support hand. So I imagine this will be a long-term process of trial and error. But at least she is having fun in the meantime! Stay classy my friend.

Magpul AFG is my fave. C clamp is pretty nice. I should mention in this edit that I used the AFG to also brace against some cover, doesn't have any teeth but it's pretty effective. Next purchase is a rail cover to give my thumb a bit of a break from the pic rail on top of my handguard.

I use a Magpul M-LOK angled fore-grip; but I mounted it on the right side (3:00), so I'm gripping it with my fingers. That fits my hand the best, with the handguard resting flat on my palm, and my wrist straighter with my arm. My thumb is pointed forward at 9:00, so I'm squeezing the sides of the handguard with my thumb and fingers; getting a nice, firm grip.

AFG is most comfortable. The magpul vertical grip is nice but doesn't do as well on an AK, hinders the mag rotation slightly. ARs don't have that problem luckily. AFG does what the shorter vertical grip does but does so better.

Will there be more barrel lengths for the BRN-180? I’d love to buy an upper, but due to my shoulder disability, the added weight of a 16 inch barrel and handguard is a little much to handle anymore. I think a 13.7 BRN180 pin and weld would sell pretty well, as it’s been the new “hotness” for a couple years now.

I noticed that some people cant their short handguard forward and some cant theirs backward like you have it. Is their a reason to cant it forward vs backward as backward seems like it would fit your hand more naturally? Also why did people stop using that bracing tool seems for competitive shooting being able to solidly brace against a surface would provide more accuracy

I use the BCM one a lot. I put it on backwards though, so that the angle is pushing forward. It makes it so that my hand locks in like it's being hooked on to, regardless of how slippery or dirty my hands are. Allows for even more stability when dodging bullets. Idk about anyone else, but getting shot at makes my hands involuntarily shake. Being able to crank down on my grip helps solve that problem.

I had that old school vertical grip when I deployed. Funny thing is, some officers wanted to see if I had attached it to a 240-B, could I shoot standing up. Was able to but I had the size and strength to do so! What bi-pods would you recommend? I want one that folds back pointing towards me versus forward due to my hand moving from the hand guard to stand them up and right back to my hand guard. But it seems the ones that fold back are weak when you are ready to shoot in the prone.

have a question that might worth a video : I'm a new AR-15 owner and despite getting a Windham Weaponry, the trigger is pretty awful, grainy and heavy. Is it a going to break-in and get smoother as I shoot with it ? Or should I upgrade it ?
@ryanpeck3377
@ryanpeck3377 2 жыл бұрын
It will smooth out some but if its really bad it wont fix it. Best to just upgrade. ALG has a decent basic upgrade. Basically a smoothed out mil-spec trigger for around $60, then there is the Larue MBT for around $100. Then the high end Geissele triggers for $240. And stay away from cassette stule drop-in triggers. They have reliability issues and are more trouble than they are worth. Besides changing the regular two pin style triggers isnt that difficult
