MiniLive #2: Coconut Sugar Scrub - This video is part of a series of Facebook Live videos I did in which I share quick things I do to make my life a little simpler and a little greener.
While there are endless variations of Coconut Sugar Scrubs, and I certainly didn’t come up with the concept, this is one I use quite often. This scrub exfoliates, softens, and moisturizes. As an extra bonus, my kids tell me it tastes fabulous.
To make, simply mix 2 parts sugar to 1 part coconut oil in an air-tight container. That's it!
Use any kind of sugar... granulated, Turbinado (aka “raw”), brown, superfine… Any of them work great in a scrub. Decide based on preference and purpose. The more coarse the sugar, the more exfoliating the scrub. Vary the amount of sugar based on how thick you want the scrub--less sugar for a liquidier scrub or more for a looser scrub.
Adding essential oils (EOs) is a great way to create a custom scent. Choose the EOs that makes you happy and suits your purpose. Peppermint to invigorate, lavender to calm, citrus to inspire. Whatever works for you. Or none at all! A naked scrub in its simplest form. Just make sure they’re pure essential oils and not diluted in a carrier oil. How much to add will depend on how much scrub to make. For a scrub with 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 cup coconut oil, start with 20 drops. Add more for a stronger scent.

Hey Lisa, I wanted to let you know that I tried y'all coconut oil you recommended, and I love it! I will for sure stick to using only your coconut oil for moisturizing my skin. It absorbs better, has a great scent, and the texture is really nice. I'm a big fan of all your products, and I hope y'all consider launching a deodorant in the future.

Excellent! It's great to hear the Coconut Oil is working for you! No plans at the moment for a deodorant. It's a tricky product to make, but I'd love for us to come out with one too!

I've discovered a use for the sugar scrub you might not have encountered--I do quite a bit of construction and landscaping, sometimes my gloves do not have enough grip. A small splash of the sugar soap, rubbed up and down fingers, thumbs and palms, gives the gloves excellent grip. The grip can be refreshed with a little bit of water, holding a moist cloth for a few seconds is about right for that. Enjoy!

I love all of these!! Can you do one for washing your hair with the liquid and or the soap?

Hi Julie- Thanks for the suggestion and I'll think about how to do a video on this topic. In the meantime, I do have an article on my website at bit.ly/ShampooToSoap. I do wash my hair regularly with the Castile Soap or the Organic Sugar Soap (whichever strikes my fancy that day) and have done so for several years now. A good ½ Tbsp. of Castile Soap or a pump of Sugar Soap is enough for my long, thick hair. When using soap, the key is to follow up with an acidic rinse. The soap has an alkaline pH which makes our hair kind of tacky/sticky feeling. The acidic rinse smooths everything down. There are two options for an acidic rinse. For my long, thicker hair, I use about 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar (ACV) diluted with another 1/2 cup of water. Or, I dilute a capful of Dr. Bronner’s Organic Citrus Hair Rinse in 1 cup of water and then pour it over my head and work it through and rinse thoroughly. Use less of either dilution if your hair is shorter. During the couple weeks of transition, especially if you’re coming from a conventional shampoo/conditioner regimen, you may need to use another crème conditioner after the rinse.

Hi Lisa, last night at Whole Foods, I checked out your coconut oil product. I'm curious about which ones have a nutty smell and which ones don't. If there's a scent, is it overpowering? I plan to use it for skin moisturizing and scalp care.

Hi there- The White Kernel Virgin Coconut Oil has a slightly milder scent than the Whole Kernel, but I use the Whole Kernel regularly for personal care - exactly for what you described - and I do not find the scent to be overpowering. I find it to be quite cozy and comforting.

How long is the shelf life?

Hi Priscilla- The coconut oil and soap are self-preserving at these concentrations. The scrub will last for a good long while, but if it starts to smell or look "off" it should be dumped. If you think you'll go through the scrub more slowly, try making a half batch.
