I bought mine back in 1992. (It doesn't have the knicker; I wish it did.) It was the first really "fine" hand tool I bought. Every time I'm at my bench, I find a use for it. Yes, it can be a little tedious to set up. But once everything is right, it's a great tool.

Thanks for the tips on using the skew rabbet block plane. I have a used, right hand model coming my way and the blade sharpening technique will be new territory for me with the skewed blade. I'm looking forward to it though and I'm sure that I'll add a lefty to the stable soon. (I just can't, not have a somewhat matched pair instead of fighting grain direction.

Veritas actually makes, in my opinion, the best set of blade sharpeners that money can buy. They even have a part that will set up multiple angles and skews making them 100% repeatable sharpening for skewed blades such as these and gets them scalpel sharp with some good diamond stones.....

I cannot understand how some people cannot sharpen this blade .The bevel is large enough to make registration dead easy.I have Veritas tools because there is a shop just around the corner from my house but I have to say the LN are more beautiful and probably will be more of a generational tool ,providing someone in your family follows you .Unfortunately none of my children like woodwork.

So you base the value of an heirloom on its looks? Don't get me wrong, I prefer LN to Veritas too (nothing at all wrong with Veritas,I just prefer the style of LN) but I found that to be an odd comment because in terms of overall quality, Lee Valley is right up there with Lie Nielsen. Cheers

Hi, newby to woodworking here, so far I have one chisel and two planes, little and large, thinking this would help me to get 100% proper joints even if my sawing/chiselling is not 100%? I am left handed, but I can manage planes both way, so .......... its either this tool or a number 3 plane and a chisel,

I am left-handed as well and am considering the right-hand version of this plane for cleaning up tenons. You can do a lot of work in a shop with just a #5 and a block plane (be it skewed or not). These are definitely the first two planes to have in a shop.

Yes, this plane will help you to fit a mortise and tenon (and a few others) properly.

Hilarious! I've read that hand tool woodworking mostly caters to the very successful CEO business executive who has alot of free time as his minions do all the work. And whose financial status and passion for woodworking results in funding a big shop, an expensive bench, and all the hand tool bells and whistles he may need. The AMSR pace of these vids really serve accentuate that!
