For me personally this is the best Plane I have tried. This plane fits so well in your hand and is very easy to work with. It is amazing how well the metal is worked on this tool, something like this can only be created out of love for woodworking...
Enjoy watching my video 🎥

I own a Lie-Nielsen #4 Bronze smoother. It is a truly wonderful tool. Hand sharpened to 12,000 grit, slight camber on the iron and with it tightly set, I can finish plane boards easily. It has become my go to finish smoother. The weight, the bedrock design and the balnce all come together to make one of the best tools that I have ever owned.

@@imi-11 The Stanley is definitely sized for comparatively malnourished 19th century city dwellers. This tool is beautiful. My Stanley No. 4 Bailey does the job, despite the handle being a bit small in my hand but it looks somewhat crude when compared to your new toy.

Love my Lie Nielsen tools, do yourself a favour and pickup the 2 screwdrivers they make for adjusting the frog and tightening the cap screw, they fit much better than ordinary screwdrivers and won't marr the screw heads of your plane.

My hand me down Stanley 4, made in about 1900, from my grandad is producing the same results. It has a flat (ish) front handle, along with the rear handle being rosewood. The blade is well used, but loads left on it. Hardwood, softwood, man made boards etc without any problems. I do clean as and when along with honing. But, we have choices now...

The best plane ever is the one you need at the time which does the job required of it. I used the LN #4 bronze and the LN low angle jack plane. The latter can do almost everything. LN is my prefetence because I need not be concerned whether the plane I use is "as good as a LN."

Beautiful piece of kit indeed. I think you should get rid of the rubber under the honing stone idea though. When using the Stanley set angle jig, the rubber works fine to hold everything in place however, when honing the back of the blades, the stones tend to dip & dive into the rubber matting which cause rocking pressure on the tip of the blade which causes rounding over time. Been there, done that with chisel honing years ago.

I agree that is a fine plane but the one that can save you time and again Lie-Nielsen no longer makes. It is a simple 1/2 inch wide shoulder type plane with rosewood sandwiched between two bronze plates and a rosewood insert to lock in the iron. To adjust it you learn to tap the base slightly (or more) in various spots and in certain directions. It will open up rabbets dadoes etc., by just the tinest amounts when you need it. If you try the low angle jack plane in the either size you may find you like those better than the No. 4.

I Googled the question and found this answer "We use Manganese Bronze for the bodies of Bronze tools. These castings are fully stress relieved, a process that removes inherent stresses and ensures that the tool will remain flat and true. The blade is A2 cryogenically treated Tool Steel, hardened to Rockwell 60-62 and double tempered." My notebook from Anaconda Copper does not mention Aluminum bronze, for some reason or another. -Veteran '66-68

I agree it's a magnificent plane. But it's also essentially a copy of my 100 year old #4 Bailey. It looks a little shorter in the video, and the blade is thicker. With both planes properly tuned, I wonder what the difference would be? 1% I think a minor improvement over a century of innovation doesn't supplant the king.
@imi-11
@imi-11 2 жыл бұрын
@bobcougar77 I had before bailey No.4 used it for about 5 years. If you ask me the difference is too big, I personally would always opt for Lie Nielsen for many reasons not to list them here now.

@@imi-11 Fair enough, I've never used the Lie Nielson. So maybe I'm missing something. I'm not disputing the quality of the tool and I'm glad they are making such high quality items. Just questioning the functional improvement as well as, I suppose, a bit of giving the king it's due.
