Very interested in this, great video. Is it possible to do a two tiered plan? I have a project I'm thinking of which will run around two walls of a room with a helix lifting approximately 18" to 2 ft above the first base board to the second. Or I may do away with a the helix and just have a track running up a slope to make the height difference. Bit complicated I know and I would normally just plan and lay but I found in the past that on rare occasion things didn't quite go to plan. Great for beginners but is this software up to my demands :)

Just figured out how to print templates of my layout on Atlas Track Planning Software! Go to File, Print, and under Range click the box that says "In full-size (1:1)." Then a box in the bottom left activates called "Full-size preview..." I clicked on that and chose the parts of my layout I wanted to print. It came out great!

As you said, the Atlas software is a rebadged version of SCARM - and on the website for that software they have a stack of really good tutorial videos that get into the more advanced features of the program. It's a very useful piece of software, easy to use, and I've used it to kick around some layout ideas for our club layout - I use it to produce some PDF files of my thoughts, along with the 3-D rendering, and email those to other club members for their thoughts and ideas. Since I am completely non-artistically inclined, there's no way I could produce a suitable sketch plan to show others... Thanks for the video.

Thanks for watching and your comment Ken. The SCARM website does have a wealth of information including ready made track plans. The simplest of tools are always the most useful. I am terrible at drawing also even though years ago I went to drafting school I still prefer using software. I even draw terrible looking stick people.

thanks Tom, I've used SCARM for a short time a while back. Admittedly I had been doing drawings to document a global communications network in Visio for 10 years. So it came a bit intuitively to me. How far can this software get me? I realize that it's only small part. But almost everything else out there stinks.

Good question Peter. SCARM IMO is the best free track planning software available, and with the available plug ins you can do just about everything. The latest 3D features look promising but I haven't tried it out as yet. If your looking for a simulator type software there are a few out there, the best I've seen is www.trainzportal.com/

Steve, thanks for watching this tutorial on the Atlas Track Planning Software. I have never used Right Track Software and most likely never will since the company went out of business about 6 years ago shortly after Atlas severed ties with them. Not too long after I did this video SCARM changed their structure and went from a free software to a paid softwars and since Atlas used a stripped down version of SCARM they also had to go with charging for the software.

SCARM is no longer free. Took a lot of users by surprise. It can be used for free with up to 100 objects. So maybe good for a small layout. I feel the improvements make it a worthwhile purchase. Also available is an animation for your layout plan that allows running several trains at once. This would be great for checking operations.

I've used the trial versions of most of them. The Atlas software limits you to Atlas track pieces. I began designing and building my grandson's 3x8 N scale layout using Atlas, then switched to SCARM. Then downloaded the software for running a loco and 10 cars, just to make certain the runaround track and passing sidings were long enough to be practical. Everyone loves free stuff that gets the job done well. I'm willing to pay for SCARM to finish designing my own 11x13 layout, and will also pay for the software to run multiple trains. I suspect this will pay for itself in not having to make layout changes because of poor operations planning. Tom, keep up the good work on your channel.

It may have something to do with SCARM becoming a paid software. It was a limited copy of the software. From what I'm hearing from other modelers, the developer is being a real a** about support. One was banned from the site when having issues.

Now that I'm back on my computer, I can see that the software is no longer free as it was when I did the video. If you tried to access it from the link on my video it may not have worked. Here is the new link: shop.atlasrr.com/t-software.aspx Like I said before, the original developer of the SCARM software which Atlas was allowed to use a limited edition, now charges for the software. Atlas is now charging for the software also.
