I think the POH for the DC3 has you start with hand pumping hydraulics to 400-500 psi and I think to be able to set cowls to open then set mix on auto lean, crack throttle 3/4", rear tanks, cowls open, batt cart, note man pressure, boost pump, starter on 30 seconds, engage and turn magneto on while count 5 to 6 blades and then prime. Startup should be smooth and quick. POH says speed 2 of supercharge can be turned on only once while engine runs which is used around 18000ft. 900-1000 rpm switch both generators on. Fun plane to fly around in.

Even if i push the yoke FULLY foward the airplane is in the air at about 70 knots.. dont know what im doing wrong here ... Powersettings are checked aswell. Maybe you have to fully fuel and load it up? Or maybe the performance of the sim is not accurat enough? How is your experience with this?
@sprocketsimulations
@sprocketsimulations Жыл бұрын
Check your trim and nose it down. No flaps. 100 is probably fully loaded but I usual rotate around 85/90 with 50% fuel. If you are starting on the runway fired up the trim is most like set with the nose up too much. I like around 2 degrees nose up, maybe a little less.

It takes practice but the best way is to keep power on. Come in around 100mph and reduce the power but do not close it. With the thrust it will give you the ability to still keep the aircraft under control. The tail will drop, and I found that having the tail wheel locked until under 40 helps ground looping. Apply some brakes and you should be good. I hope to be releasing a video soon on tail draggers in general and will include landing the DC-3

Another tidbit about the fuel feeds, there's 2 separate valves for each engine feed separately under the throttle to the left and to the right by the floorboards. The right side one is hard to see at first, so dont be like me and make it almost to Halifax and think the one on the left is for both engines to take from. Of course, in the simulator you can cheat, pause the game, fill your tanks right up before you even realize what's wrong, but it definately takes away from the realism lol.

This is amazing that you have that many hours in this aircraft. Very jealous!!! MSFS definitely does not take any of this into consideration. You can actually just fire it up with the right sequence without timing the blades. But we are talking about a game called a simulator. It’s close… but never going to be exact. Can you provide some of your experience with MP and RPM and altitude for what we should be setting. What I have read is 30/2050 but most airline pilots say as low as 27/28. What did you fly at?

@@richardotoole8905 Braking? I've found a better strategy is on landing to cut throttle and keep in full flaps and most importantly keep that tail UP, which if anything requires exerting increasing forward pressure on the yoke as you slow, don't use braking or you'll pearl onto your nose! That huge tail rudder provides the lateral control, and it needs to be up in the air!! The DC-3 will quite naturally glide to a low enough speed in 2-point stance under full rudder control where one won't be able to keep the tail up any longer and it will drop all on its own, THEN you just unlock the tail wheel and taxi away like a pro. My biggest issues with her is landing in a significant crosswind...she really wants to round up and it can be tough to counter!

I had the same learning curves with the Beech 18. I’ve had some better landings already. I found that practicing on a super long runway of not taking off but getting the tail up and keeping your throttle and pressure on the yoke to stay around 50-60 and get used to how much rudder is needed. It’s not much. That’s what when on in the video. Over correcting both ways until the tail dropped and the basically slid out. Tail draggers are always super difficult to land with a crosswind. I’ll get there with more practice. Personally I like the challenge.

@@sprocketsimulations Cool. Sorry for my harsh comment I've edited it to be more nuanced. I've read things about locking the tail in the comments. The funny part is, the handling and initial handling is very very stable so it's so harsh when after touchdown it starts taildragging..
@sprocketsimulations
@sprocketsimulations Жыл бұрын
Oh I didn’t take it harsh at all. Expect a video in the coming weeks. Tail wheel lock definitely helps until your speed is down. Very very slight differential braking until you are under 20ish knots and then unlock the tail wheel for taxi. Once I drop the tail I typically just use small inputs as it is a big plane and takes a second to see how much you have put it over. That’s when the skidding happens. I practiced at a long runway like Bakersfield and kept it in landing conditions and would just take off get about 30ft in the air and land. You can get about 3 practice sessions per length of runway.
@Goldadon
@Goldadon Жыл бұрын
@@sprocketsimulations Thanks. I get on better now. Tail wheel lock on and when aero rudder doesnt have much effect I unlock the rear heel. The most difficult part is when you are about to put down the rear wheel to the ground. The plane at that moment is too slow for decent manouvrabilaty.

Why no 3 wheels landing ? It helps to control the plane on the ground...
@sprocketsimulations
@sprocketsimulations Жыл бұрын
Most tail draggers require a wheeled landing or a tail low. This is for a lot of reasons and based a lot of conditions such as surface and wind. It also helps with vision over the nose and is better for that little wagon wheel out the back. To very over generalize this, soft/short field landings are ok to do a 3 wheel. Otherwise you would do a wheeled. With a proper wheeled landing you will have more control because you’re not at stall speed right away. Three wheel you will only have your rudder and if there is an upwind that dips your wing you won’t have as much control. This landing was my first definitely not done well. I have practice now and will be coming out with to land this properly until MSFS with a wheeled landed.

Unflyable for me. Always banks off severely and goes into a nose dive. It's useless.

Have a look at my video on flying tail draggers. It might help. I haven’t experienced any weird banking or dives. Double check your trim and auto gyro if you are using it.

Unfortunately, I do not believe there is a switch, but you can use a key binding to turn it on. I use a flight panel that will switch it on.
