I finally got time to do a spark plug replacement on my Porsche 996 turbo (the procedure on the 997 turbo is not identical but very close). I show what parts that need to be removed, how to gap the new spark plugs and install everything with the correct torque specs. My coils have previously been upgraded, so no replacement needed there. I also had time to do a little visual upgrade at the end.

I own a 997turbo, so I know how complicated changing plug is. This is great work, however I recommend to change plug together at the opportunity of the maintenance around engine. I will change plug and ignition coils when I replace water pump and coolant reservoir tank.

Yes it's a bit of work, but luckily all the parts are pretty easy to remove at least. Porsche recommends changing plugs every 4 years so they can't seize in the block👍

@@NorwegianCarGuy Yes,you are right. The plug should be changed every 4 years. As for me every 4 or 5 years, it is needed to remove the engine because of other reasons, for example oil leaking from cylinder head, alternator failure. Now it is scheduled to change water pump,I will change plug and ignition coil together. Anyway I will be looking forward to your next video, because it is very useful.

You may hate to hear this but you can lower the engine 4-5 inches while leaving everything connected. Might be helpful down the road!

Yea, I have seen other people do that. Hopefully not something I need to do for a while :)

Good evening sir! First, your 996t content is fantastic. Please keep it up! Really (really) appreciate the time and effort you put into detailing what you're doing so I can do the same at home in my garage. Second, do you have a link you could share for the spark plug gapping tool you used (if you indeed still like it)? Thanks! I'll be combining all of the "bumper-off" services soon.

Good evening! Appreciate the compliments!! I bought mine off eBay and put the link in the description now. It's not as accurate as I thought when I bought it because there is some flex in the spark plug, so it moves back a bit after tightening. But once you calculate the flex, it works fine. So I would buy it again. It is also worth having the wire wheel as a backup though if you need to open the gap a little again.

Should be pretty similar on non-turbo, correct? Except step to remove intercooler on non-turbo doesn’t exist

I don't think you have to remove anything but the heat shield then? Should be enough room between the rear bumper and engine. I might be wrong, but I think I have seen it done like that on a lift at least 🤷

I think I'd be replacing the coil packs at the same time because Bosch packs are pretty garbage anyway and those are a pain to get to.

Thanks for the tip, the last owner already upgraded the coil packs to the newer upgraded Bosch ones. As far as I know they are much better, and looked perfect 👍

Took mine in to have the spark plugs and coil packs replaced. Looks like it's money well-spent, then. 😅

It was an easy job if you like to fix stuff. I could not use the standard plugs Porsche was going to use because of the tune, so I found it easiest just to do it myself👍 how much did you have to pay?

@@NorwegianCarGuy fair enough. I'm not a fan of getting my hands dirty. I think it was £800 all in.
