After several strut projects the last month, I think I've come up with the absolute fastest and easiest way you can do the job while removing as few parts as possible. I'll show you step-by-step disassembly and assembly when I remove the strut to replace the shock and spring. If you're only replacing the spring, bearing, shock mount, dust cover or bump stop, it's the same procedure except you don't need to loosen the axle and tie rod.

I usually just remove the strut with the entire top hat. 3 13mm nuts on top of the strut tower, then you have plenty of access to the one nut that holds the strut into the top hat/bearing. If you remove the 10mm bolt holding the bottom of the spring hat on, you can literally wind the spring off, so it's no longer under tension. I've also found that you don't need to remove the tie rod, the knuckle will move enough with it attached. It is easier to remove the bolts on the inner axle, that outer axle bolt is torqued to something like 350 ft lbs

Great video, I just loosened the center nut for the axle removal. This might just be easier than loosening the axle on the inside.

Thanks! Appreciate it👍 I was considering that too, but previous experiences got me to do the inside as the outside can often be a pain to get out of the upright.

But you have to tighten the axle nut to 430nm when you put it back together. Simpler to do the 6 bolts at the inner side.

The only add I would make is to use a ratcheting motorcycle tiedown to pull the control arm down. Hook one end to the other side control arm and hook the remaining to the side you are working on as close to the ball joint as you can. The ratchet it tight and it will pull that control arm down another three or four inches.

Nice video, i have a Boxster and i want to replace the springs only, this looks like a nice method for that, wont have to worry about drive shafts at the front or removing the strut. Just a thought on the strut top nut, could you pen round the three bolts, loosen them and push it to the end of the slot, it may give the access you need. Subscribed.

Thanks! Appreciate it. On the previous video I do the same but just changing the spring👍 I ended up buying a Schwaben set so I can reach them and torque them correctly. But moving them over is a really good idea👍

Thank you for your presentation, what about using a spring compressor to squeeze the spring down enough to be able to replace the boot and bump stop then reassemble?
@NorwegianCarGuy
@NorwegianCarGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds pretty tight and fiddly, which could make it take longer. The spring is not really the issue, the damper will constantly push up making it difficult to get anything off. Could work, but I think getting the strut out will be easier 🤷👍

@@NorwegianCarGuy Thanks, there isn't a whole lot of spring to get a hold of, I guess I was thinking to be able to allow enough space to slip the boot and bump stop into place...keep well

Yes, you swap them from your OEM front dampers.

You missed a part off, on the top of the suspension strut there’s a spacer below your lower washer. You can see in your video you don’t swap it from one strut to the other. I’m not sure if I’ve explained it well? Under the large washer which sits below the the top mount bearing is a small spacer.
@mrh6577
@mrh6577 3 жыл бұрын
You can see it at the 15min mark to 15min 20sec
@NorwegianCarGuy
@NorwegianCarGuy 3 жыл бұрын
@@mrh6577 I think you are right. I moved everything over, but that spacer must have been missing from when they put the lowering springs on. I guess 5th time is the charm then... I should be able to get it on quickly at least

@@NorwegianCarGuy I’ve been watching some video’s to remind me how it’s done. I stripped mine down 2 years ago because the spring broke. Now the shock absorber is leaking. I’ve ordered 2 and waiting for them to turn up. I’m going to leave the drive shaft in and undo the hub nut which is what I done last time.

@@mrh6577 I checked now, and you are luckily wrong :) There is a groove in the top of the bump stop and the cone washer (99634351300) is in that groove so you cant see it :)

@@NorwegianCarGuy Nice! I'll HAVE to check out your Roadster videos. I daily drive my 2010 Roadster as often as I can. It's such a great around-town car because I can easily position it wherever I want to be in traffic due to the super quick acceleration. Then, when I get home, I just plug it into the wall and it's good to go the next day! It will honestly be a bittersweet day when the original Roadsters are worth half-a-million and are no longer feasible to daily drive.
@NorwegianCarGuy
@NorwegianCarGuy Жыл бұрын
@@rollingstocks if you live a dry place it should not really be a problem to daily it no matter how much it's worth because pretty much all the parts on it is super cheap👍 but for me it was an issue with all the salt in the winter... Wish I would have kept the last one a bit longer though, then the value would have been double of what I sold it for😖 It was an amazing daily for me, for the exact same reasons as you said👍 my full owners review might give you some good tips👍
