Nancy continues with the seventh tutorial for the Quilt As You Go Block By Block series. She refers to the book, Block by Block from Beth Donaldson. The book is out of print but you may be able find the book on Ebay or Amazon.
It's time to put the blocks together. It can be a bit of a confusing process but Nancy will try to go as slow as possible. It does help to have the book if you are able to find it.
The first thing to do is trim down the blocks. The blocks have been appli-quilted and quilted. Starting with a side of the block with sashing, take your ruler and measure a half inch from the sashing and trim. Continue measuring a half inch away from the sashing around the block and trim. Where there is no sashing, trim the extra off right next to the edge of the block. You may end up trimming off a little bit of the sashing, but that's okay. Continue trimming the rest of your blocks the half inch from the edge of the sashing and then up to the edge of the block where there is no sashing.
The next step is assembling the blocks. It takes a couple of steps to do this. First, separate the sashing from the batting and backing and flip it over. Move the batting and backing out of the way and use big needles to pin it back. Flip back over. Take a second block and place it on top of the first block matching edges where the backing and batting are pinned back. Use additional big pins to pin the edges together matching them as closely as possible. Ease in the sashing if it is sticking over the edge. Put in a lot of pins to hold the edges together especially if you are easing in some of the fabric.
Take the blocks to your sewing machine. Using a full quarter inch, instead of a scant quarter inch, start sewing the blocks together. Yep-you saw that correctly! Nancy sews right over the pins going nice and slow. She eases in the extra fabric to make sure the blocks stay close to the right size since they have already been quilted. Do a back stitch to secure the end of the sewing. Continue the same process to sew the next blocks together.
Use Marti Michell's fusible webbing or Heat Press Batting Together to hold the batting in place for all the next steps. Take the extra pins out. Flip the blocks over and open up the sections on the back. Pull a little on the right hand side and iron down the sashing on the block. On the opposite block, take the batting and pull it down from the backing. You'll need to trim the batting as evenly to the edge of the neighboring block as you can. Using the scissors with a slight curve cut away the extra batting up to the stitched edge of the other block. Once it is all trimmed, lay the fusible side down of the fusible webbing and iron in place. Take the backing and fold it under until it is just passed the stitching line and iron. The small busy multicolored pattern hides the seam. Using Roxanne Glue-Baste-It, Nancy places dots of glue, just inside the seam line. Then she presses the glue until it is dry.
She takes the blocks to the sewing machine and sews down the ledge right next to the large center block catching the seam on the back. The sewing quilts the blocks together. Continue quilting the sashing if you want to. Check the back to see if you caught the back seam while sewing next to the ledge. If you didn't, you can hand sew where you missed.

Nancy, I've just attached my first two blocks. I won't lie; I was scared to death I was going to ruin this quilt for my first grandson, but these two blocks sewn together have restored my confidence. I'm ready to do the last two. Then onto the rows...Thanks for such excellent tutorials.

I’m a little late to this game (!) but am trying this technique for the first time. My first QAYG. I have Beth Donaldson’s book, Block by Block, but could not grasp her process of attaching the blocks into rows - even with illustrations. It was very confusing and seemed backwards. Then I happened upon Nancy’s GAYG video series and her clear instructions were a godsend! I followed each video very carefully, and after completing the block quilting, being careful not to quilt the specified sashings, I attached the blocks into rows. However, when trying to then attach the rows together I realized that something in the video instructions wasn’t quite right as part of the sashings were sewn down (during block attachment) making the connection of rows impossible. So, I went back to the book and reread over and over the confusing instructions. Finally I created a few mini blocks to try and follow Beth’s instructions, and once finally successful, realized there was indeed a few key instructions missing from Nancy’s video! :-( All this to say that you really need the book for attaching the blocks together correctly. It would be impossible for me to explain. But everything else about Nancy’s videos seems to be correct and she is an excellent teacher! I’m just trying to save someone else from having to figure out what to unstitch in order to assemble. It was quite the process!

Hi Jeanne - I'm not sure what you mean? Can you fold over the edges onto freezer paper with the glue - yes but you do need to get the freezer paper out - I would recommend that you use a cut away stabilizer instead of the FP so you don't have to take it out - Hope this helps? - Nancy

Hi - the "black" piece is the fusible interfacing that will hold the batting together through washings. The glue is water soluble and will go away when washed. With out the interfacing to hold the batting they will separate when the quilt is washed - hope that makes since :)
