Quilt as You Go Denim Placemats - Using Scraps from Denim Quilts

This week I used the scraps from my various denim quilts to make simple improv-style quilt-as-you-go placemats.
I took denim off-cuts and pretty 'focus' scraps to make these fun placemats that can be personalized to whoever you want to make quick gifts for.
As I explained in the video you can use leftover batting in these placemats, but if you want them to be proper hot plates (like for a dish straight from the oven instead of a dinner plate) then you will want to use some insul bright. Link below.

How about coasters with the denim scraps or some cute Christmas tree shaped ornaments made like the placemats. Add little scrap pieces o Christmas fabrics or leftover ribbon/ lace scraps. Those would be really cute!

My first ‘real’ quilt was a denim one for a grandson. Didn’t think I would like quilting so I just had a regular ruler, pen, scissors and cardboard! 25 years later and many more regular type of quilts I’m making two more denim quilts for more grandchildren and using an idea I gleaned from one of yours. So thank you for the inspiration and thank 😊 for taking us to the Scottish quilt show. ❤❤❤from Brisbane Australia 🇦🇺

I haven't made any Christmas gifts yet, but I've made a bunch of Project Linus fleece blankets - super easy and quick with a Serger. I am out of batting so I have been sewing my batting scraps together with long zigzag stitches - it looks a lot like Frankenstein but it was oddly satisfying. And i had enough to make 2 big lap quilts. I might tackle that pile of scraps yet 😂 You inspired me to go it

I’m using my dad’s jeans (he lost his battle with cancer in May) and mom and my siblings will get a lap/throw size quilt made with his jeans and flannel shirts, the back side will be a quilt made with things they love, (Harley Davidson, or trains, Hawaiian flowers for mom, etc) I’d love to make my children the placemats with the smaller pieces of the jeans and flannels, in lieu of a quilt. Not sure there will be enough of dad’s clothes for 4 more quilts.

@debragerum7678 I love that you are making some lovely memory quilts. I lost my Dad to cancer about 8 years ago now. I still have some of his T-shirts that I intend to make a quilt with but haven’t worked up to it yet. If you want to make quilts for the kids and there isn’t enough left you might want to mix the denim with some quilting cotton. I have a block tutorial called framed scraps quilt block that is about using precious scraps in small quantities. I also used a couple of my dad’s dress shirts in my scrappy heart quilt pattern (that one requires a purchase though) and one of the ways I thought folk could use that pattern is for memory quilts using really small scraps. Whatever you decide to do will be a wonderful way to remember him and keep him close. Big hugs!

Hey, Kristin! This is a fabulous idea-as are all of your denim projects! These will be perfect for my my new travel trailer. I’m recovering the cushions in denim (backed with fusible fleece for stability. I’m also replacing the gathered brown valances with box-pleated denim valances. My quilts/throws/pillows will also include denims. I’ll use some of your previous designs for these. By the way, did you see Don Kim’s video using the hems of jeans to make a tote? If not, it’s worth checking out. He’s always upcycling clothing to make bags. Thank you, and stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦

Seems like a lot of fuss that could be cut entirely by just piecing the strips before you sew down. Adding a patch takes more time without adding to the cute factor. OK. Gotcha. You like the patch effect and its worth the extra to make that happen. ))))
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 8 ай бұрын
Yeah I like the effect but also I don’t want to do the pre-planning that piecing strips ahead of time would need. But of course if you prefer you could piece the strips first. Different things feel like hassle to different folk!

I love the look of the placemates. I've always been afraid to quilt through just the batting. Doesn't all the fuzz get in the machine? I don't have your patience with the accent pieces. I think I'm going to piece them between the denim pieces before I stitch and flip. I love your idea of just having ONE pop of color too. Thank you Kristin.

I haven’t noticed extra fuzz in the machine but it always needs cleaned out from time to time anyways. I don’t have the patience to piece the strips first 😂 I just want to start! - I love how we all have different things we find tedious! Absolutely do it the way that makes it more fun for you!

I love these, just wondering why you decreased the stitch length to 2.5 when sewing the backing on? If you needed to unpick it wouldn’t it be more difficult? Perhaps you are such a careful sewer that you don’t make mistakes 😉.
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 9 ай бұрын
2.5 is the standard length i stitch at for piecing. The 3 stitch length I was using on the rest is more of a decorative top stitch length. So I put the backing on with the standard length as I want it to be secure!

Kirsten, are you using a demin needle in your machine? Also how are you cutting your denim, with the rotary cutter or scissors prior to having the strips ready. Looks really cool.
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 10 ай бұрын
I’m not using a denim needle but I have before, I don’t find it makes a huge difference personally but everyone’s machine will be different. I cut my jeans apart initially with pinking shears or sharp fabric scissors (like to cut away the pockets, seams etc), then I use a rotary cutter to cut specifically for a quilt from the ‘leg fabric’.

Really liked this, and do you ever have problems with the batting building up inside your bobbin or anywhere else since there isn't any material under the batting when adding your strips/sewing your strips of denim?
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 10 ай бұрын
No I haven’t had that issue. My machine has a double foot lift so when I lift it to the highest the feed dogs lower which stops them catching on the batting when I’m trying to slide it to where I want to start sewing. They re-engage once I lower the foot and sew. That’s really the only thing I do differently when I have batting on the bottom like that.

I see, I noticed you were sewing on a Paff machine, do you like this machine? I ask because I'm using a Babylock and it skips stitches when I sew on denim therefore looking for a machine that can handle thicker fabric. @@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 10 ай бұрын
@user-qi7ki5wk9n I do like my machine and it can handle denim okay but I wouldn’t say it was as good with thicker fabrics as my cheaper Janome is 😂! I have a video about my Pfaff machine if you are interested- can’t remember how long ago but you should be able to search on my channel page I think!

My question is why not sew the accent piece into the denim ahead of time . Just wondered
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 10 ай бұрын
😂 I knew someone would ask that! I meant to do a little voiceover but I forgot! The answer is just for the fun of doing it a bit different and getting the over - under patchwork look. Also doing it this way I didn’t need to plan ahead and do strips all the same size - I could just add things as I go. Of course you can add them ahead of time if you prefer!
