Lochner v. New York | 198 U.S. 45 (1905)
In the late 1800s, as the labor movement took hold in the United States, many states passed legislation to protect workers. One such law passed in New York in 1897 and known as the Bakeshop Act, capped the number of hours bakers were permitted to work on a daily and weekly basis. The State of New York indicted bakery owner Joseph Lochner twice under the Bakeshop Act for permitting an employee to exceed the maximum allowable 60-hour workweek.
Lochner was convicted and fined by the Oneida County Court. Lochner’s conviction was affirmed by the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court, and New York’s highest court, the Court of Appeals. Lochner appealed to the United States Supreme Court.

I just changed my major, pivoting into that same direction. Would you mind if I messaged you more about it? I still have a nascent understanding of what to expect. Thank you if you could!

Strict scrutiny wasn't really a concept back then, that comes from all the Jurisprudence from Caroline products

Whoever created this video should have specified which decision was overturned by the "West Coast Hotel vs. Parish" decision. That decision was about minimum wage law and had nothing to do with the employee work hour restrictions from the "Lochner vs. New York" decision. This is why so many people are so confused about constitutional law. So many people trying to educate on the subject never seem to clarify context. They make these videos for the casual viewer and never get call out for mistakes.

The justices were dumb back then, many were former slave owners or from families that owned slaves. These justices saw no reason why a bakers couldn't work themselves to the bone for slave wages at 80 hours per week at 5 days per week or 16 hour days? That insane! These were idiots justices. Although, I can understand it a bakery wanted its bakers to work two 8 hour shifts during the holiday seasons like Thanksgiving or Christmas, that's reasonable as long as the employee was pay extra wages for all these hours behind hot ovens.
