I also use both zbrush and blender in the industry. But that being said it’s true if you’re in the pipeline I would recommend zbrush and Maya because they are industry standards. You can be sure that no matter what studio you go to people there will be using those programs. I switched from Maya to Blender a long time ago and it’s great with all of the add ons, but now looking back I wished I stuck with Maya because of all of the collective studio knowledge on it plus programs are all free for me anyways. Zbrush is a given must to learn.

Instead I’m worrying about so many other things I’d need to type out a half an hour lesson just to describe it Let the artists do their art, ffs. Tools and settings should help the artists do exactly what they imagine, not have the artists help the computer understand what we’re trying to achieve Sorry but it could just be done better. iF you beggining your journey start with blender, it gives you more angles to master, hardsurface sculpting, rendering, riggin, you can grasp all the basics and learn how to combine them, maybe you will land a job that will require you to make props or maybe even some environmental structures at the beginning, meanwhile blender will definitly find solutions for higher polycount and vertex, and at some point you will be ahead of competition a multipurpouse artist able to be flexible to any workflow. and ye you will be the BEAST of new age of modelers that go with the flow of new technologies and possibilities. BUT If you just wanna catch up to old farts that to lazy to learn anymore, stick to that dinosaur zbrush and extintct in the near future with hes crazy creators who dont even know how proper mordern UI should look/work :) cheers

When I went to school for animation years ago, they gave us this student discount for access to Maya. I got Zbrush as a result of that, and was tinkering with it and really loved using it. Then years later I discovered Blender has 3D modeling as well, so I figured "it's free, I should try it out!" Well I hated using it, it didn't feel anywhere near as welcoming to a new person as Zbrush did, and I ditched the fucking thing. So for me it wasn't as simple as "they're the same thing."

I find that interesting. I had a similar experience, but I remember me and my fellow students HATED zbrush at first because of how unintuitive and clunky even simple things like zooming in felt. There's also the design priorities of an application's developers. Pixo have always been artist focussed in their software's communication: masking and polygroups, real-time sculpting feedback and lighting (matcaps and pixols), the ability to take any parts of the ui you use and slap them around the edges of the viewport. Maya on the other hand has the same issues as Blender: it can be done in Maya, but it'll have more steps and take a bespoke workflow, usually with the help of devs or plugins to make things properly usable (until they buy the plugin).

Started off using nomad sculpt, I was surprised to find out from a guy who has taught ZBrush for 20 years that nomad sculpt handles polygons better than blender. He was saying he could handle around 30 million on the iPad whereas blender struggled with that level, obviously ZBrush can handle 100 million. Which is why I'm looking to upgrade to ZBrush, not to mention blender isn't as intuitive without having to go into a plethora of menus before even getting started.

@@gcharb2d I've said same thing for the Fur/Hair system for long time, but they finally updated that.
