In today's video, we're looking at the newest software update for the Hisense U8G, which is M0801. I haven't done a complete deep-dive into this update yet; however, I wanted to talk about two standout features that are both a welcomed edition and slightly bothersome.
First, let's talk about Freesync and Local Dimming. FINALLY, we are able to fully utilize local dimming while using Freesync and/or at least having Freesync enabled. In previous updates, local dimming was either set to off, greyed out, or did not actually function if you had Freesync turned on, regardless of whether or not Freesync was even operating at the time it was enabled. Now with M0801 Freesync can be enabled and/or actively operating while retaining full utilization of Local Dimming. I have tested this on both the Xbox Series X, PC, and PlayStation 5 on both the Hisense U8G and the Hisense U7G.
Now for the bad. One thing that is beginning to drive me a little crazy, even though it's such a small thing, is the black screen issue that has been presented with update M0801 on the Hisense U8G and U7G. When attempting to play content from any source (Without game mode enabled), the Hisense U8G disables its picture for 3-5 seconds while the audio is playing in the background before finally enabling the picture. I am unsure if this is due to it attempting to process the video feed with its picture presets; however, this does not happen in "Game Mode" which is turn disables all the extra picture settings to lower latency, so I can only assume this is the case. At the end of the day, it's not a deal breaker; however, this is something that was not previously preset in past updates.

I’ve been using it for about a week or so. Added a new gaming bar style readout for persistent fps/ALLM/vrr/hdr information. No noticeable changes to image quality. My system info does randomly pop up on screen though periodically while gaming which is strange and inconsistent.

Please help me if I’m incorrect, I understand for international versions on the ex. U7G, the HDMI ports 3&4, are the ports you will use when connecting to your next gen console to get the full features. Is that correct?

For international models all 4 ports are hdmi 2.0. In North American models port 3 and 4 are hdmi 2.1 for 4K/120hz.

Was a little late to update to this firmware but everything seems fine on my U8G & U9DG. Look forward to you checking out the U8H at some point. Seems everyone loves it but not sure if worth upgrading to from U8G/U9DG.

With this new update does HDR color (or just color in general) still take a hit on both consoles when playing games at 120Hz using the text clarity setting (aka full 4K)?

Xbox/PC yes, PS5 no. From what I’ve been reading, it might have something to do with how it’s reading or processing the signal from Microsoft. Some have fixed it by changing their bitrate settings on the series x

I can't decide between the Hisense H8G and the TCL 831X1. I cant find any Review for the 831X1. Which is the better TV as a PC monitor for 4K 120Hz gaming? It's important to me that VRR works properly or at least that the TV doesn't have VRR or G-Sync/Gamma flickering because my current LG Nano has that and it's extremely annoying because I can't enjoy some games when it's constantly flickering at 4K with 120Hz?

Im unfamiliar with the TCL model you mentioned, and it appears to be specific to the international market. Specs show freesync and hdmi 2.1, so providing they are close to full power ports I don’t suspect you’ll have any issues. A lot of flickering issues can be caused by poor hdmi 2.1 cables that are also under spec for the bitrate transfer. Never trust cheap brands advertising “up to 48gbps” as that could also mean the cable performed below standard threshold as well. I’ve personally never had an issue with Ugreen.

I was streaming some Amazon tv last night. when I began backing out of Amazon, a notice popped up on the screen saying that there is an upgrade available for my U7G HiSence TV. I selected do the upgrade. The screen went blue with the word upgrading and the bar to show the progression of the upgrade. It has been 12 hours and the percent of upgrading completed is still 0%. There is the typical notice "Do not turn off the device or cut off the power while upgrading." And, nothing is happening. I have not tried turning off the power and restarting the TV for fear that the upgrade has removed the original firmware. Don't know what to do or who to contact. Help! please advise ASAP.

Sounds like the update is stuck. I would contact support first and source the latest firmware file for usb install, then try cutting the power. If it works after that’s great, but if not then at least you have the file for manual side load. Stuck at 0% sounds like either an internet issue or a storage issue.

Hi, I have a Xbox series s and use a 2.1 Hdmi cable on my Hisense U7G tv. The tv supports 120 fps at 4k so I should be able to play 1440p/120pfs however in my Xbox display settings if I select 120fps it defaults to 1080p and 1440p/60fps. My Hisense settings menu doesn’t offer me the option to enable hdmi advance settings. Anyone have an suggestions?

1440p/120hz is software locked in the Series S, at least the last time I checked. FOr 120hz, you can only do 1080p, or 1440p at 60Hz.

Is it OK to leave freesync enabled on TV all the time even when watching cable box or 4k firestick? Also I now have M1103 firmware (U8H) wondering if you have this firmware & if it fixed your black screen issue. Also could it be your Apple TV that was causing it?

It’s fine to leave freesync on all the time as it only kicks in once a compatible source device sends a freesync signal. I believe it was CEC causing the blackscreen issue while it was racking settings from other input devices that were not on the live source. I haven’t experienced the issue in a very long time now :)

I have a question, for some reason my local dimming is being weird and the medium is actually stronger than the high. The low is low, the medium is medium, and the high is very low. Whenever I switch from medium to high everything on screen gets overall darker. Any idea?

I find the high tends to do the same on mine as well and almost crushes the colours more by messing with the contrast ratios. I find medium the most appealing for me. As to what this happens, I’m not too sure.

@@qwazyd0gg strange cause this is something recent for me. Unless 60hz Dolby vision and 120hz HDR10 are treated completely different. Cause when I use Dolby vision it seems to be okay

Qwazzy! I hear you recommend using text clarity optimization over picture quality optimization for Gaming(Series X)? Did you check and see if it's actually True 4K with 4:4:4 chroma on Xbox series x? If so I will use it then.

Borderlands menu text seems much sharper; however, that’s the biggest difference I have been able to see. Can you recommend any other ways of testing it via the console?

@@qwazyd0gg the only way via console I think works is start a HDR game and see if it's RGB 10bit. I don't know how to check if it's 4:4:4 chroma or not. I thought text clarity was only full 4k compared to picture quality

It does read 10bit in the readout while using test clarity. It also shows significant benefits on Windows, which usually mimics the Xbox quality wise based on Microsoft’s algorithms.

No way is it 4 4 4 chroma. It dosent even look good as the picture is way washed out in tcm. You need to turn down the brightness to like 20 bust games with fog look bad and the colors aren't great

Hope all is well! Haven't seen new content in a while. Anyway, for me it's been a while since I took a critical look at my U8G as it's been performing great. (I edited the rest of this commet) While I just tested it and VRR, local dimming and low latency ARE working on the XBSX, it's only with Freesync turned off. I know it's working because I can see the refresh rate fluctuating when I close out of the TV menu. So I don't know if Xbox has an HDMI VRR that it defaults to when I disable Freesync on the TV, or enabling Freesync on the TV just disables local dimming and has no impact on refresh rate, I don't see any reason for enabling Freesync. I don't need it to be on for PS5 nor XBSX. Maybe it's more crucial for PC games?

all the sliders worked when these tvs launched. then they broke alot of stuff with 1st update and just recently fixed with m801. some ppl get the TV to late to know about the launch firmware

This update I got it recently over the air and everything was okay until later I found out that all Dolby Vision videos on Netflix and Amazon are broken , distortion color , and I had to call Hisense who replaced the whole motherboard and that fix the problem and I went back to previous firmware m0210 . The technician from Hisense who fixed the problem told me not to update the TV if there are no issues with the TV . I have U8G .USA

It held up great and is still running strong. I gifted it to my father after upgrading to a larger panel for my bedroom. I well say that it appeared to develop a little more DSE than I original remembered seeing at the start, but it was still more than passable quality wise over the years.

There is no Freesync on the PS5, at least yet. So by simply enabling HDMI Enhanced on the TV and VRR on the console it will trigger HDMI level VRR. Since I use an AVR to route everything to my TV, it’s just nice to be able to leave Freesync on now as my Xbox uses the same input. For LD, I personally favor medium.

For gaming or anything with a lot of on screen text, absolutely. On series X it will still dull the colors a touch so if you’re striving for maximum POP, that’s the only time I would recommend otherwise.

I haven’t yet unfortunately; however, from what I’ve been hearing initially, it too suffers from vertical resolution loss in 120hz 4K and is pending an update similar to the u8g

Yes you do. The other preset has a vertical resolution loss causing a slightly fuzzy picture in fine detail

hi there I currently have the Hisense u9dg and i am on the n0510 firmware. your video was the closest thing i could find when it comes to answering questions about local dimming and freesync. is n0510 newer than m0801? literally cannot find the answers anywhere and my local dimming still doesnt work with plain vrr or free sync. kind of want to get rid of the tv. please help

N series updates are newer than M series. I’m running an N series update now on my U7G and LD is still functional with Freesync for me.

also LD does work with hdmi vrr on my tv and previously freesync caused terrible blooming but that has somehow corrected itself. it still disables LD for freesync but its tolerable now

Honestly though it’s a pretty valid guess and one I would also assume to be true as well. There’s a lot more to those “dual panel” u9dg so I’m sure they have to approach them differently than other panels in their lineup

What’s your output device? You need to have hdr enabled on your gaming device and play an hdr compatible title. Most modern titles are, but some are not.

It may depend on GPU; however, if you go into display settings, you should see HDR options for Windows 11. Once you enable it for Windows, then it should activate HDR game mode on the TV.

Yes, the u6 series is a 60hz panel. As for the blur, it should be bandwidth issues. Are you on performance mode and quality mode when gaming? Sometimes on newer titles performance mode will favour performance over quality to stop micro dips in fps.

Freesync is more sensitive and works down to a slightly lower Hz rating for dipped frames, but the term Freesync is just a labeling of AMDs variable refresh rate technology and algorithm. They’re essentially the same thing

Enable on ps5 and disable on tv. The ps5 does not support freesync so by enabling vrr on console it will engage with the tv level hdmi 2.1 vrr rather than the TVs freesync. If you turn off vrr on console then there is no variable refresh rate working at all, regardless if it is enabled on the tv.

NVIDIA insider drivers breaks the HDMI 2.1 and makes my screen go black . But 517.22 seem to do the trick. You ever have any issue like that with drivers and or could just be a insider thing.I just recently put a RTX Evga 3070 in my system so i could get the HDMI 2.1 goodness.I did have to replace my HDMI cord which was supposedly an hdmi 2.1 i got from Canada computers an I CAN brand more like I CANT lol . Now i have a braided 2.1 spec and all is good .DID you have any issues finding a good HDMI 2.1 ?

For quality cables I almost exclusively use UGreen cables from Amazon. I too had issues with low spec hdmi 2.1 cables as most are labeled (up to 48gbps) but usually fall short. So far I’m 100% success with 5 UGreen cables ranging from 6ft to 15ft without issues with audio or 120hz 4K. As for driver issues on pc, I haven’t experienced any black screens with my Evga 3060. The black screen issue I have now is only on my main unit while switching video feeds (Netflix content, KZfaq, ps5, etc); however, my pc is solely for productivity and gaming and very little content consumption.

Depends if you can get a consistent 120fps with vsync. Too much under/over can show tearing

@@DonGynikoo i was wrong its actually a 3000 series thing and 4000 along with 2 firmware updates for the 4090 . It is also driver profile based. Warzone does the gama flash thing in menu ,ntb in game and some games, none what so ever .So long story short its the nature of the beast lol .Vrr , Gsync for me is a must . You loose quality..I notice a nice option in accessibility options ,High contrast text instead of that other text tweak @120.I play all my games with HDR and when you use that original text tweak it breaks the HDR

That’s interesting feedback! I just installed a 3080 from a 3060 yesterday and play in 120hz hdr in text clarity mode on my u7 and have yet to have an issue. Did a fresh driver install on the 3080 but my 3060 was back one or two versions.

I know my tv runs at 120hz because control n my nephew was playing 2k22 n I realized it was playing at 120 I’m not sure if the tv is running the vrr or allm only because it’s on auto n the tv don’t say anything but hdr10 and the hz and 2160-3260 but I’m generally happy with the tv most movies I’ve noticed aren’t even playing at this tv capability the best I’ve seen was uhd with hdr10 @2160 which looked amazing with clear n motion enhancement depending on what I watch or through which I choose to watch through either my ps5 or the tv I switch certain settings now that I’m comfortable with it !!!! That’s the key finding what apps run with best setting and also knowing what your watching because most ppl just say this TV SUCKS but TOP GUN LOOKED FRIGGIN AMAZIN AND CONTROL @ 4k hdr10 with 120hz looked amazing !!!!

I work 50 hrs a week I h am raising my 6 yr old nephew I have like 10 minutes a week for myself WHICH IS Spent ON PS5 lmao 🤣 took 30 years to turn me into a gamer I never enjoyed it all of a sudden I’m on my ps5 every opportunity I get which is becoming rare I bought madden 23 thinking I was gonna play competition like I do nhl hut but it was so confusing n time consuming and my skills were just not their like they were from yrs of nhl play plus theirs only truly 15 guys you need at three positions footballs 22 at 7-8 positions and just much more complex but I only played competitively during last season cause I was home everyday Afro 21/2 months when my little brother passed away 🥲now I’m at my regular life plus got my nephew to look after

Wow man! You’ve got an insanely busy life, and I’m very sorry to hear about your loss 😔. We have very similar schedules my friend. I have a 7 and 13 year old, and between work and KZfaq (although KZfaq creation has been slipping due to time constraints and a passing in my family as well), I have little free time. I give myself 2 hours a night, very late at night, to game and watch something before I go to sleep while the rest of the family is in bed.

Made the motion for me worse on netflix and prime when watching shows and movies. The series x works good now. Wish my tv would just work right though.

@@qwazyd0gg it is from my nvidea shield. It all worked great for tv/movies before the update. It seems to be more prevalent in the dolby vision titles. The motion is pretty bad.

That’s strange. Have you tried a factory reset. I just watched House of Dragons and Dahmer last night on an Apple TV 4K and hadn’t noticed any changes for the worse

@@qwazyd0gg I just ran Dahmer on netflix from the tv app and it was good. Do you think if I were to put a lot of apps on the tv itself if it would effect the picture quality? I'm going to try resetting the tv first and share my results.

Make sure your shield is also outputting in 24p. If it’s set to higher then it may be introducing artificial frames causing motion artifacts

Sorry, I was more so referring to firmware updates beginning with M, such as M0210 vs launch firmware that began with an L which suffered from Red Ghosting.

So I chatted with Hisense and asked for the information this is what I was sent from the rep. Keep in mind he copy pasted it and had all jacked up with Japanese in it and I asked him to make it legible and literally told me to just read english which I told him to do the work because I paid and Hisense does not provide easy access to the information like Call of duty does after an update. so here is what I was sent M0801 1.
