Nice job! You might get rid of some chatter by relieving the other two sides of the cutter by grinding or something. Also, keep the tailstock stickout to a minimum.

Had I been thinkin ahead I woulda made the shank 1/2" and held the prototype in a collet in the tailstock and bypassed the chuck altogether" And yes, relief shoulda been done....I kind of rushed thru it during this experiment

Interesting tool. A circular cutoff tool for the tailstock? At least that is what it puts me in the mind of. Rather ingenious, I think. Great Job, thanks for sharing with the rest of us Richard.

This particular trepanning tool requires no relief angles because it is the exact profile of the groove to be cut...it needs refinement but looks promising

the chip form produced tells us that the tool is more rubbing than cutting. You have made a relief angle on the top surface of your cutting edge. But your rake angle is 0 deg. For cutting steel you usually use a rake angle of 5-7 deg. I.e. the vertical surface at your cutting edge should be undercut by 5-7 deg. Then you should get a cleaner cut and curly chips.

Thanks!! Can be made to any size desired...its the beauty of it. "Adjustable" would take some thinking. Its just my prototype made from a grade 8 bolt for my specific job coming up. A new one needs to be made of tool steel....machined, hardened and tempered. I can do all that here ~ Richard

It's so cool to make your own tooling. Keep up the great work.
@MyHeap
@MyHeap 6 жыл бұрын
Adjustable means you make a smaller cutting end dispensing with the curve much like a regular trepanning tool. Grind some side clearance for varying size grooves and mount the tool in a MT2 boring head and put it in the tailstock and adjust the boring head to the correct diameter and off you go. Seems like that would work to me. :-)

This one is a protype made from a large Grade 8 bolt. I ordered some W1 tool steel to make the final version as this one seems to work ok. You inspired me with all the trepanning you do

@MakinSumthinFromNuthin 6 жыл бұрын
Userwl, do you think putting another cutter 180 degrees out cutting upside down to avoid twist is a better way to approach this ?? I really trust your judgement and knowledge when it comes to trepanning and I am just a newbie machinist :) Richard
@userwl2850

Makin Sumthin From Nuthin "if it ain't broke don't fix it" it did exactly what you wanted it to do. The only thing that could happen as you're using the centre to cut off centre it could bend your tailstock or Morse taper on such a small machine. A few pieces is ok but if it was a big quantity I'd think twice as it could cause damage. Certainly doing it with opposite cutting balances out the force. Thanks for your nice comments. David.

Thanks Dave....At slow lathe speeds negligible, at high speeds I was getting chatter and was causing issues. This protype was just a grade 8 bolt....waiting on the W1 I ordered for further refinement

all you do is set the tool post on a 5.74 degree angel and so when you in feed 1000 thon the dial with the angel it ends up being 1 10.000th put a mag mount gage on the side until it reads the way you want it too so as you in feed it will read 1 10.000 so my guess is that doing this you would use a very sharp tipped point tool for this I can t remember the video its that thing under the tool post with the degrees on it so you may want too leve it lose so you can tap it into alignment so you get your 1 in 10.000 th at a time I know you like to do the best you can on any job you do so I now tell you have a good day buddy .

Yes, I have used that technique on a few jobs and even played with that yesterday as a matter of fact. its great for fine tuning an outside diameter but problematic when boring to a specific depth. yes more tool deflrctshone that's the thing with boring bars they flex I bet higher speeds and a sharper tool may help out with that and take smaller cuts I have an idea for a direct indexing head that will index in degrees minits and seconds and even 10ths and I can sell them for under 200 bucks and all you need to operate it is a calculator so no need for plates and all that stuff and no back lash .not bad for a guy with grade 2 hay lol .

I Like the Trepanning Tool, but Personally I would make it to fit into a boring bar holder instead of the tailstock. . . While You SAY it cuts to Exactly .638 diameter I'd wager your repeatability isn't that good. . . Ever see a Drill Bit walk off center ? Your Trepan Tool will want to do the same thing. . . May Be a couple .0001 or May Be a Few .001 depending on how snug your tailstock is. . . Where-as if mounted in a boring bar holder you can dial in the exact diameter and start knocking out part after part after part with excellent repeatability. . . Plus it lets you set the carriage stop as a depth gage.

soooo you made a literal cutter... for the tailstock of a lathe. Careful before you bend the tailstock out of allignment, it's not meant to see that much pressure. Don't see the advantage of this compared to the normal operation; all lathes's turret can be set to do this, as if it were a boring operation. Otherwise neat execution. I'll think about it, maybe there's some neat uses for this. Coulda added the chamfer to the trepanning tool :P
@MakinSumthinFromNuthin

So do you think if I had left another cutter 180 degrees out that was cutting upside down to offset the force of a cutter on just the one side is a good idea? (a cutter at 9 & 3 O'clock) With a radius of just .319 I cant see where much bending would be taking place in cutting soft aluminum with a properly sharpened cutter. Its all experimental at this juncture but you have raised a good point
@dimitar4y
@dimitar4y 6 жыл бұрын
Results of making that tool "two-flute": a) that'd reduce the accuracy and make the manufacturing of the tool more complicated. b) it'd reduce 'one side' wear, and would prevent the tool tilting and biting into the material, crashing the lathe Two flute would be an absolute must for deeper ones or for larger diameter ones. The main problem with this tool isn't so much the momentary load, but the chance of the tool "biting" and seizing into slightly deeper recesses. Right now this tool is like a trinket, and although an oddball, is perfectly okay. I was just thinking of 'advancing' it somehow.
@MakinSumthinFromNuthin
@MakinSumthinFromNuthin 6 жыл бұрын
I was kinda "thinkin" of one cutter being 3-5 thou thinner in finished width than the final cut...the second cutter being the finished size width-wise for the finish cut but both engaging the face simultaneously to offset twist that you referred to which is a concern and thx for pointing that out. Maybe its just a crazy concept altogether....and worthy of the waste basket...but with a bore depth of just .100 I have no way to accurately measure the bore since the telescoping gauges have a .250 width and can not be inserted fully to take the measurement. I cant use calipers and scratch the inner bore. (Optical Device) Reamers have beveled ends and I need a flat shoulder...maybe its beyond what I can do with what equipment I got but trying to make it work cause I never sent a customer away saying...NO, I cant machine it ~ Rich
