In this HVAC Video, I Show SEVERELY UNDERCHARGED, UNDERCHARGED, CORRECTLY CHARGED, and OVERCHARGED Scenarios on a Running R-410A Refrigerant Air Conditioner with a Piston Metering Device While Checking the Charge with Total Superheat. I Adjusted the Refrigerant Charge Level 4 times and Checked the Charge 4 times. Supervision is needed by a licensed HVACR Tech while performing tasks as Experience and Apprenticeship garners Wisdom and Safety.

When I refill R-410A according to target subcooling, but suction line pressure is still at 90s, which means saturation temperature in evaporator below 32F. To avoid a frozen evaporator and suction line, I’ve to continue refilling refrigerant and take target subcooling aside. What’s wrong with the system? Thank you very much

Wow ! I was in the refrigeration trade for 42 years before I retired in 2005. I must say things have really gotten much more complex. With your instructions,I am in the process of installing 3 split heat pumps in my home. One is in and two are on schedule for spring. A good refresher course is always welcome! O yes, I did order the guidebook and the q cards to help if a get into a bind. THANKS for your help.🤠 Yes I'm doing all the work myself. I'm only 78 young...

How to calculate this if the AC has "winter mode" installed - the condenser fan spins depending on the temperature of the condenser (so it can spin at normal speed, slow or not at all). Would that affect the "outside temperature" in the calculation?

I’m fairly new to residential HVAC. Installed a new unit. These units come precharged for a 15 foot line set and the existing line set is only 8 feet, does this mean I need to recover some of the charge? It seemed to be overcharged just by checking the gauges. I recovered some refrigerant which lowered my Head pressure but had no effect on suction pressure. I can not get evap coil temp below 55 degrees. The house will not cool down below 77 when it’s warm outside. It is a 410a piston system.

Enjoy your videos and have gotten good use from your book and reference cards. Have a couple questions.. maybe you have videos already.. 1. I've noticed with condensers that have a microchannel coil than the manufacturer doesn't seem to specify a subcooling. And when following the manufacturer instruction to just go off their pressure and temperature chart for liquid line I end up with a SC that was far higher than I would had if I was just going off SC alone. So wonder if you can explain this or show the proper way to check equipment with microchannel. 2. Other question is what is the best practice for checking refrigerant charge on a system/circuit with more than one compressor? I've seen some equipment (actually back to the microchannel) where their temp pressure chart was based on both compressors in operation. Some older equipment not using microchannel coils that have 2 or 3 compressors I'm wondering if I can simply operate one compressor at a time and check charge. I suppose the charge on one would be good on the other.. however checking these individually is good validation that equipment is working. Just curious what common practice is for this. Thanks!

You know funny thing is, I watched a building maintenance guy recharge a R22 system at my complex back in 2015 in Austin, TX. He didn't do any of this subcooling or superheat calculation with temp probes everywhere. In fact I didn't even know there was this whole thing about subcooling or superheat. He simply charged it to the right pressure and left it at that and the system worked fine. I would assume he's licensed as every AC units at the complex is R22 systems... no way he'd be hired as maintenance guy if he wasn't licensed to do R22. But in Taiwan there is NO regulation on HVAC. We could buy R22, even R12 over the counter here! And none of the AC guys I talk to here are ever licensed or even heard of a license.

If you have no superheat, and .2 is so low it could be 0 with a little calibration error, you are so overcharged you are starting to flood back liquid to the compressor and are in danger of killing it.

What do you do when you don't know what metering device the system is using? Sometimes you don't have access of looking at the inside coil so how can you know what metering device the system has?

raul robles how come you can’t see your evaporator?? Are you talking about a package unit or a split unit. Either way you have to take a few screws out to be able to see.

@@mwatkins2464 talking about the evaporator on top of the furnace. I always have some that are closed good. I feel like I would have to cut out a hole to see in but I feel like there is another way to know without doing all the extra work

raul robles you shouldn’t have to cut anything unless someone did a hack job on it. Just follow your copper tubing where it goes inside the unit. The metering device will be on the small tubing. You should have some 5/16 screws to take out if yours is a split unit.

My contractor charged me $250 and did none of this, besides connecting the guages. Then proceeded to tell me my compressor was faulty and needs replacement, $6K. Where can i find a honest contractor who will diagnose a Heat pump that wont cool or heat and proceed to fix the issue?.

The unit is a new installation, R410A 1.5 ton Run Tru by Trane, new lines and New 1.5 ton evaporator with a piston, air coming out of the closest vent is 62 F, my pressure an Low side is 151psi, my saturation temperature is around 52 degrees but the temperature at the low side is 60 degrees, I learned at school that is supposed to be all the way around, I do not understand, please comment, I am new on this field 🙏🙏🙏

Salvador Gonzalez usually the saturation temperature is lower than the actual low side pipe temperature at the condenser. If you were to measure the temperature at the outlet of the evap coil, it would probably be a couple of degrees cooler than when it gets to the condenser. If you did a proper vacuum and you have a piston, Make sure your charged the unit according to the superheat charge base on the wet bulb of the house at the nearest return grille. Compare with a SH table. When there’s a high heat load, the temperature of the pipe won’t be as cool but as the unit runs and removes the humidity and heat load it will get cooler. Make sure your superheat is correct.

Do you have a psychrometer (sling, digital, or thermocouple with sock) to measure indoor wet bulb temp? In order to get your charge correct you need to find out what the indoor wet bulb temp is. Here's a helpful formula to calculate target superheat: indoor wb x 3, minus 80, minus outdoor ambient temp, divided by 2.

WHY is it that newer systems don't install a sight glass in the liquid line?? Cost can not be a factor surely! I have a Goodman 2 1/2 ton heat pump on R22 and it,s been fantastic for 13 years now. Yea I do all the pm checks. For I installed it in 2011. Older units are so much simpler to solve problems on than newer units. Much too much electronics. Wait until there is a big electrical surge. Think of all those circuit boards!!
