As a woman under 5', I can confirm that people definitely percieve petite women as young or trying to be young. When people ask me how old I am, they either get very surprised at my answer or tell me that I'm "just a baby!!!" and act like I'm the most adorable thing they've ever seen (I'm 27). It can be very condescending and weird

I'm a very petite tiny woman and no one has ever called me a baby. That's awful. I'm sorry that you've gone through that. I can't imagine. I'm going to say it's probably because I have a pretty commanding personality. I was the I was one of two girls in a family full of very loud, very boisterous, very large men. Like my cousins. So no one's ever said that to me. Plus with the work I do no one would ever consider me a tiny woman because I've put myself in some pretty dangerous situations. I work with victims of human trafficking and domestic violence and I've stood in front of clients and their abusers. I'm not tiny. Not afraid. Maybe I should be but I'm not.

I'm a 40 year old 4'10" woman. I go out with my children (16,14, and 4) to doctors visits etc, and get, "we can't accept siblings as a guardian unless they're 18." Then when I show them ID the daggers come out. You can't be serious. You look like a TEENAGER! This is all said with malice, not sincere surprise. I don't get taken seriously by anyone. I'm just some sort of novelty. The fact of the matter is, finding clothing in my size is SO incredibly hard. I shop in the juniors section, I try to find modest, plain clothes for the most part. I don't dress like a teenager, I don't think. Jeans, tees, maxi or midi dresses, maxi skirts... nothing short or revealing. I don't know if it's jealousy or what, but it's incredibly insulting.

I can relate to petite women in the height sense. I'm 5'4, and I live in Sweden so here I am considered very short. I've had too many people try to pick me up or take my things and hold them up over their heads. The problem for those people is that I'm not petite in size, I'm naturally very muscular and curvy, so not only am I way heavier than I look ( because for some reason people forget muscle weighs more than fat) but I'm also very strong. It would be in poor taste for OP to whine directly to her client about how accommodating for her disability is just too hard and too expensive and those accommodations make OP personally uncomfortable and she promised her husband that she wouldn't make any changes to the building (i.e. buying lights you can adjust the brightness of, or adding a wheelchair ramp or something) so it would also make HIM uncomfortable too, so now the client is told that she's making everybody uncomfortable. Keep in mind SIL actually have any real suggestions on how you’re supposed to dress, because she’ll say that no matter what you wear. You could wear jeans in T-shirt and she still call you that. Just the same as it’s not transphobic to not want to sleep with a trans person because of genitalia, it’s okay not wax someone because of genitalia. Also male genitalia is completely different to wax so it can be unsafe to ‘just wax it’. Even then, the comfort of the stylist is paramount. If they don’t wax male genitalia, whether on a man or a woman, then that’s their choice. It doesn’t make them transphobic. If it was eyebrows or underarms or legs, absolutely you’d have a case to argue transphobia, but in a case where genitals are the subject, and just as it’s not sexist to not wax certain genitals, it’s not transphobic!

Last story: So I'm a transgender man and I just wanted to say that the OP's reasoning for not wanting to wax Alex is totally understandable and justified. I always get so sad when I see fellow transgender people act entitled and claim transphobia at the drop of a hat because it just thickens the stigma around transgender people and the stereotype that transgender people are all very overly sensitive and stuff🥲 Also since we're on the topic, it's not transphobic to not want to date a transgender person for not having the genitalia you're attracted to! People don't get upset if you prefer blondes over brunettes, so if you prefer dating cisgender women or fully transitioned transgender women, that's not transphobic and totally fine, it's just a preference. 5th story: I have a trans woman (pre op) friend and she had wax once after transition and she described in VIVID detail that it hurt TOO MUCH specially because the hormones make the skin more sensitive. After that, she gladly just waxed with professionals who are trained to deal with male genitalia on hormones because it's way more delicate than the outer labia. If the procedure is done the same, it can tear the skin of the testes off. NTA, if the OP isn't trained and proceeded, she could have hurt Alex VERY BADLY and Alex should understand it.

Regarding the last story, As a trans person myself. I have no problem with the fact she refused. In fact i think it was a bit bad that the client didn't inform her that she was trans while taking her appointement. I mean. it's not like an appointement to the hairdresser where no one care if you're trans or not, here, we are speaking of genitalia. it's clearly a more sensitive matter. and i think it's fair to ask if they are ok with it before taking an appointement. Sure it can feel bad to be rejected from multiple places, but you also easily can find places that will do it without problem. So yeah, i really don't see any transphobique stuff here. just someone that lacked a bit of common sense by not warning the person who gonna have to take care of their genitals. A bit sad that it always endup as "discrimination" and "transphobic" and ruin people reputation instead of just being taken as logical..

Story 1 Edits: Edit; thank you all for your comments, we DO have cameras in our pool area and I will be showing and sending footage to both my sister and brother in law. Also they both work in law enforcement as well and do know what these type of accusations can do to mine and my husband’s careers. Another detail to add is that they themselves have been contacted by the school for accusations my niece has said about them and vice versa where they had to contact teachers for something my niece accused them of as well. I understand being a parent and standing by your child’s side but when they’ve had to deal with this situation before.. Last edit: My niece is in therapy and has been for a couple of years. It was suggested by her school counselor and her parents found a therapist and she sees them like once or twice a month. She has a really bad perception of therapy as her parents say therapy does not work and is only for “crazy” people and now she seems to have the same perception. Not everyone in law enforcement is a cop lol I work more in the clerical side of my department, I’m finishing up school to be more in the psychology side of things. Whereas my sister and BIL work more hands on with inmates. I told my sister about the cameras and emailed her any and all footage from the backyard and front. She then told me that I was being over dramatic with the whole situation and that we all know her daughter lies. I reiterated how lies like that could cost me my job or my friends jobs and she said “it’s not like you have a real law enforcement job”. She that she doesn’t feel like an apology is necessary. I didn’t feel like fighting anymore and decided that NC would be best for now. Throwing this in here since it’s on the same topic: I spoke with my brother (26M) about the situation. Growing up with three older sisters, he always knew how to stay out of the drama and always be neutral with all of us. He lives a state away and we don’t have much contact besides the occasional “how are you” texts. I told him about the situation and asked how he would handle it. COME TO FIND OUT, she did the same to him at my wedding about 8 months ago. My brother works with kids and that could have cost him his job as well! My niece told her parents my brother was sneaking her drinks and they believed her, even though they were AT my wedding as well. He said he went NC after that since he didn’t think the drama was worth it as he lives a whole state away and doesn’t really come visit unless it’s for Christmas. Which he didn’t this past year but we all thought it was because he had just been in town for my wedding.

I may get some hate for this. But for the last story, I think OP needs to have something in their booking policy that specifies "Biological Woman". Because if that wasnt clear when booking I understand the frustration of Alex. OP is not the AH for the interaction or her boundaries, but may be a small AH for not having a clear definition of what they can offer. You can't say 'serves all women' then not serve a subset group of women. If the reverse happened, FtM and the genitals were still bio women, but the rest was male, how would they have acted? It's just that a clear set policy that's well established and easily found before hand may've saved this from happening.

The trans-woman client story: I am a transman so I understand this feeling of possible discrimination well through experience. OP of the story is NOT being discriminatory. Taking personal feelings/agreements out of it, if OP does not have the experience in waxing clients with male genitalia, it is entirely reasonable that she defers to someone else who does. Why should OP possibly get in trouble or sued if something goes wrong during the waxing due to inexperience? At that point, it has nothing to do with the client being trans as a cis gender man would be rejected in the same fashion and for the same reason. Frankly, while it is uncomfortable for the trans person, the client should have made the point known when booking that they are trans, especially when it comes to intimate areas... that's a policy I go by anyway and I try to be transparent about this when necessary just to save everyone time. Taking OP's personal feelings into account, she is the one who determines who she takes on as clients. She could reject someone for any or no reason at all. She'd need to deal with the consequences of rejecting someone, of course, like lost income or the possible rumors about discrimination but, I think OP assisting in finding the client someone who can meet their need says enough that it isn't based on prejudice against the person, it was based on inexperience with waxing male genitalia. I'd make the same decision in their shoes. Why would anyone risk their entire livelihood on that when there are people who can do it more safely? Maybe OP could consider training for this situation in the future if the agreement with the husband could be discussed. IMO, society is becoming a bit too overly sensitive on some groups of people to a point where those groups can leverage it to get what they want or cry discrimination... It's becoming concerning and I think that pendulum is swinging too far now. For Trans people, we just want to live our lives normally as possible. We don't want to make a big deal about the fact we're trans, as much as we can anyway... Complaining about every little fault is making trans people sound like fragile babies that need to be coddled and the world being bubble wrapped for us. While standing up for rights is absolutely necessary when it treads on human rights, this is too small of an issue to cry discrimination about, especially when there's logical reasons as to why someone decides to turn you away and you are being given assistance to find what you want done. Why would I ask someone who isn't trained or experienced to do something to me? I don't ask a random person to do surgery on me then cry discrimination if they say no because they don't know what they are doing. So, OP's issue is the genitalia that the body has and not having the experience of working with it, not the gender the person goes by so the discrimination claim is BS in my opinion based on the info given. NTA.
