In fact, I would say that employees are obsessed with getting paid! Why can't employees just work for free due to their love and passion for the job? Whenever my boss needed me and knew I wouldn't come in he'd hit me with the "you don't have to walk to work we'll come get ya plus dinner" eventually the price changed based on the day but the guy knew people needed incentive to come in on an off day

Where I worked once, they had the policy that, when you have to do additional work, you'd get paid extra. Like overtime on the same day your're actually already working? 1.25x your hourly rate. You would have to come in extra on a day, you're were not scheduled for? 1.5x your hourly rate. You would have to come in on weekends or holidays? 1.75x your hourly rate. I once had to work 1 month in another city for a client locally. 6 days a week (mo-sa) instead of my normal 5 days a week (mo-fr) contract. On top of the higher rate, they paid for tickets from a to the customer (including additional tickets going back home saturday evenings and returning monday morngings so I can spend at least a whole sunday at home with wife and family) and also a 4-star hotel (including breakfast and dinner buffet) and all additional traveling expenses, e.g. a daily ride from the hotel to the client and back, except lunches (because I would pay for my own lunches if I would work for them back home). Totally resonable, I thought back then. I later found out, that that was exceptionally generous at later jobs.

When I was a teen my brother kept getting offered work by a local farmer, can't remember exact amount but more than minimum wage, drove there and back and a large lunch and a huge dinner at end. It was because the local village had very few people old enough to work but still young enough to be fit that weren't already working so he set the price accoordingly. As for overtime up until about 15 years ago I know jobs that gave 1.5 or double time for any overtime in a day, then we had a lot of migrants (not meaning that in a anti migrant way) so businesses had a large supply of workers desperate to work for low wages so a high paid job with double time overtime went to minimum wage, and even minimum wage for overtime hours too as they had no end of people wanting to work.

My former place of work had to offer $4.00 extra an hour on weekends so people would work their weekend shifts and not call in and if you get called in on the weekend you got the $4.00 extra an hour and the $3.00 an hour call in pay also. I got called in a lot of weekends cause my supervisor was lazy as hell and didn't do anything and Everytime someone got sick she thought she was coming down with it too. So glad I left that job though.

@@carstennsfw generous? What is the alternative? 🤔 US labour laws are a trip! Where I am, overtime and sat is 1.5x sun and public hols are 2x. By law. I have also never traveled for work where I didn't get what you're describing, even in my very first job at 23 straight out of school. To my knowledge, there are very few jobs that can get away with some of the abuses I hear about from reddit... even restaurants have a mandated minimum wage bc for a long time they were running that tip-as-pay scam. Side note: one thing I have discovered recently from a friend is that some of the more expensive hotels/restaurants actually keep part or all tips paid by credit card. They claim it's to cover the merchandiser fee for the cc. 🙄 I always ask, and if that's the case, I tip cash. It's criminal!

The issue i'd see is something like a bar, my mother worked in one where the serving staff were lazy and thought they were above the kitchen staff, she would walk in for a evening shift and find dishes that were still there from the night before and almost shouted at telling her they need them washed now as it was evening meal time and they had no dishes to serve with, for a 4 hour shift she would often be in 8 hours but only paid for 4, the bar staff refused to share their tips (there was a tip jar) as they said they were hard workers and reasons like she was just kitchen staff, the management were rude to her and said she must do all dishes before she is allowed to go home, the bar staff would spend most of their time just talking to locals and when quiet sit around doing nothing but talk to each other about how easy they had it, they took regular cigarette breaks, long lunch breaks and always walked out on time when their shift ended saying they weren't paid to work past that time. Yet my mother would have no break, not even time to go to the bathroom. In that case I can see pooling tips to be for the best.

to the guy driving his boss.....what he is doing is (in the USA anyway), flat out illegal due to labor laws. The BS gap in the work schedule unfortunately isn't, but the boss demanding he picks him up and takes him home without compensation is. By law, that can be considered work without pay. In addition, by default, the company is using OPs resources either without permission or by coercion. AND if OP stands up for himself and is fired, he has grounds to sue for wrongful termination. OP also mentioned he worked at a "Big Box" store, so there most likely are superiors to this boss to talk to about this. Just symptoms or tested positive? Not that I want an employee or coworker come in even with just symtoms of a cold. That's poor management even from just a risk perspective. If one employee is mildly ill, let him rest a couple of days so he can come in fit again. If he comes in sick, he might protract his illness even further and has to absent for weeks on a doctors note and on top of that infect more employees too. Why would I risk that? I'm telling that from a point of view in a country with statutory health insurance. Which means an employer will get money from the insurance company for the tim any empoyee is on sick leave. (And by the way the employee gets paid sick leave as well of course.) So all the employer has to do, is to somehow cover if needed. He will not lose profit. And still there are employers (or managers) here too, who try to persuade a sick employee to come in nevertheless. I can only imagine that they rather risk their employees health and their own mid term profit with that, then fill out those bureaucratic forms and having to spend some time to find a cover (like actually doing part of their job).

So, the worst wage theft I experienced was in the Army, for almost a year my pay did not match my pay grade. I was an E-5 getting paid an E-4, which includes Base pay, housing allowance, and food allowance. It took me and my S1 (administration) telling the pay office we'll be going to IG (Inspecting General), the equivalent to any inspection board for everything in the Army, for them to finally process my promotion. I enjoyed a HUGE back pay and live a little bit more comfortably with my pay raise because I was already pinching to save large amounts but now, I sometimes have more money than I know what to do with. Moral of the story: Always threaten or go straight with any inspection board/enforcement agency to get you hard earned money.

I also want to add that it seems to be a global problem with military and govt pay offices! They wanted to underpay me because they refused to believe I had 2 qualifications, despite showing original documents. I had to have the department head from one college send a formal letter before they would pay my proper wage ($4 an hour more). (at a time when they make you move interstate and you are on your own and have to pay for everything with SFA money)

Learning to put your foot down at work is one of the most empowering feelings. Worked in a kitchen for a university under a union, contract and all, late nights into early mornings and I lived an hour away on a good weather day, manager's thought they'd save costs by making all workers stay and help clean and close until all stations were done, but absolutely would not pay overtime. I laughed at my manager and said "My contract has me working until 12:30 and responsible for my station only unless you want to pay me overtime, I'm going home." The only reply I got was an angry walk away and a "I hate union contracts." It felt good

I've had bosses like this in the past. I almost got fired because of the "customer is always right" mentality. A customer told a store assistant manager that I slammed her paint cans on the counter and threw the paint sticks at her face. Mind you, there was a security camera pointed at the counter. The manager didnt even hear my side. She sent me to her office and apologized to the customer for my behavior and gave her 20% off (the employee discount fyi) and I think she even got a free $10 gift card. My ass got chewed out and she was about to fire me when the store manager and my department manager walked in. Store manager told me I could go back to my department with my manager and needed a word with the assistant store manager. My department manager saw what happened and had the store manager watch the security camera footage. Sure enough, what the customer claimed never happened. The assistant store manager ended up getting written up for giving an employee discount to a customer. They're only allowed to offer customers 5% off product and a $10 free gift card. That assistant store manager did not like me. That was unfortunately not the last incident with her.

At the end of their meal, all the diners gave them $100 each and the sort of head of the group said it was to be split evenly between them to the manager himself. Then he pulled the infamous stunt and the group rightfully got on his ass over it. The girls did get their tip only for him to turn around and fire her over it, leading to the GoFundMe

To add on, the group of 44 wanted to do something very nice that day. They even called before hand to ensure that they got the tipping rules beforehand. When the waitress told them that she had gotten her tip stolen, they were enraged, demanded their tip back and gave it to her in the parking lot. The restaurant never pooled tips before and the owner wanted to use a cut for a party held for the employees later. They then fired her over “unrelated reasons”. The restaurant is now backpedaling and repeatedly tries to make themselves the victim by denying allegations and saying the tipper and the waitress are lying.

After me and my coworker had to explain to him that I did not steal the money, he proceeded to “teach us kids a lesson” (most of us were teens, I was 17) by taking all of our tips for himself, refused letting us clock out until we admit someone stole from the register. most of this seems its related to how dumb working in an “at will” area is (you can get fired for no reason legally) 😭

Supporters of At-Will actually say that it balances the power of of the employer vs employee since both can terminate the contract at any time… which is bullshit since employers held so much power over the years and the laws in the US protect them so goddamned much that giving both a bit of power does nothing to change the dynamic… its like trickle down economics all over again.

ALMOST any reason, it comes with a lot of caveats, for example: you can not be fired in retaliation or for gender/race/orientation/religion/political reasons, or for following the law or refusing to break the law, nor can you be fired for being sick. Companies get away with it because employees don’t bother fighting back, those that do typically win and many courts don’t tolerate company lawyers who try to drag things out.

@@black1917 I agree and disagree with you. First I agree that employment at will means they can fire you for any reason or no reason except for an illegal reason. Illegal reasons being those you've already outlined adding in whistleblower, environmental and workers compensation. What most people don't realize is how hard fought and dearly won all of these exceptions were to obtain. I further agree that many people do not exercise their rights. Where I disagree is that if they exercised their rights they would win and that courts don't have tolerance for employers shenanigans. The legal process can drag on for years. In large states or federal cases litigation can drag on for five or more years. There aren't many plaintiff's that have the financial or emotional wherewithal to survive the process itself. Also some courts are decidedly pro business and as a general rule the pro business leaning increases with the level of the court-- i.e., appellate courts generally more pro business than trial courts. This does not apply to every individual court or every state but it is a noticeable trend.

I'm glad I've never had an issue with my supervisors and managers. Though, I've almost quit as my coworker had drove me insane when working together in one place. I'm not the only one everyone has had issues with this guy. He's pissed off so many that my supervisor almost went up to where we were working to give him a row after my second run in with him.

Employee theft is actually a major issue in the retail industry. Most likely someone else in that area actually was stealing but OP got caught in the trap they set for them.

I get that it's the OP's material, but if the videos were made on company time with company resources, and they don't have anything in writing saying that the OP owns the material, then they maybe out of luck.

Honestly I recently moved back to the US after 20 years in Europe- the lack of employee rights scares the holy crap out of me. Living with constant anxiety about 'on demand' employment and employers with the power to deny your unemployment just sucks..

What people fail to realize is that federal law dictates that tipped employees if the total of their hourly wage and tips does not equal the minimum wage their employer has to pay them half again of what the minimum wage is. So say the minimum wage is $12 an hour. If the total of their wages and tips equal out to $11.99 then because their pay did not equal up to minimum wage their boss has to pay them an additional $6 an hour. So in that case they would essentially be making $18 an hour. Which is a hell of a lot more than most jobs pay and a lot more than a lot of servers deserve. I would know I work in food service for years and I never felt like I deserved more than ten bucks an hour. And that is federal labor law so if you are a server and your boss isn't honoring that you need to report them to the labor board

I got sent home from Hooters once and ended up getting fired (also for being “late” at 4:59 even though we had to show up fifteen unpaid minutes early so technically I wasn’t late) because my co workers hair extensions were tangled in the back and I came up behind her and tried to fix it for her and she’s like stahhhp and I was like “sorry it’s ratty I was trying to help” and she fast walks crying to the manager 😳 I really thought her and I were friends and that it would’ve been nice to help geez never again now you can go around with a booger for all I care
