I remember hanging out at my homeboy's house one day after school, watching MTV. This video was on as his mom happened to walk past the living room. She stopped on a dime & just stared at the TV. After a minute or two of her standing perfectly still, we looked over & she had tears pouring down her face. You never know what somebody is going through.

As someone who's lived with depression their whole lives, this song and video had the meaning that sometimes, all you really CAN do when you're stuck in that place where everything is just sad and lonely, is get up, get out, and start walking. You may not have a destination yet, but keep walking. You're not alone.

The ending was to emphasize that when one or two people take their lives it isn't reported or noticed. When 300 or 400 people just disappear it became noticed. Suicide is not an answer. Anyone who feels alone, please talk to someone.

I've been a R.E.M fan for forever , and this particular song has always touched my spirit, more so particularly last year getting through the isolation of the pandemic lock down being somewhat of a depressive anyways, with just my cat. "Everybody Hurts" and a few other well chosen pieces were on my play-list constantly........through lots of tears.......I just kept repeating that phrase: "hooooold on"........"hoooold on".

The lead singer, Michael Stipe, wrote this song directed towards teenagers, because their suicide rate is so high. The lyrics “take comfort in your friends” are the ones that touch me the most. When I was a teen, it was only because of my friends that I am still here. R.E.M.’s lyrics are always spot on

This song has SAVED so many lives....including mine...in so many dark and hopeless times.💔 It has been used a lot in suicide awareness campaigns - it's heart-breaking, but somehow gives you hope? Such an important song for so many people.....Everybody Hurts & some of us almost take that final step. Michael Stipe was a good friend of Kurt Cobain, and was devastated when he committed suicide just a year after this single was released. But as we know, for some people, the PAIN is just too much 🖤 R.E.M. will always be remembered for giving people this timeless saviour. Much love to you from Ireland 💚

I loved your observation about changes in music videos through the decades. I grew up during the advent of MTV and VH1 and enjoyed seeing the progression and changes in styles for popular music videos through the years. I’ve never noted what you did though about adding ppl to vids. I also absolutely love that you rated this song 10/10 because it’s one of my all-time favorites. Growing up before videos became the norm, I often think they detract from the song. They can be really enjoyable but they change the experience of the music. This is one of the few videos that I thought really amplified the music. Seeing all the different faces and the painful snippets of their thoughts tells the entire story. Instead of focusing on your own pain, you’re shown how everyone is hurting in their own way. Their situations may be different, but we’re all connected by the same pain. Bravo R.E.M.!

Please make reaction to Diana Ankudinova! Diana’s a contralto gifted with naturally occurring polyphonic overtones. Diana's voice is like a rainbow of colors now and there's a pot of gold that's the gift at the end of the rainbow, and the rainbows being the various tones that and qualities that she has to offer through the song. Diana's polyphonic overtone sounding is indescribable happiness, delight and goosebumps. To perform all this with a contralto chest register, combining with a mixed and head register, ending each phrase with his own unforgettable yodeling technique, no one is able to perform songs, as Diana does.

IMO, the OG of independent bands that were lucky enough to hit it large with WB. I loved REM back in the early 80s. They got very little airplay (on radio) other than the late-night hours or on college stations. Quite a few of their songs have meanings - and some you really need to figure it out. Mike Stipe at one time was considered by fans for election into public office - that's how much his lyrics meant to many people. I was pretty much out of them by the time this toon came out, but it does have a great message and sound to go with it.

People don't know, or they forget, but album sales, R.E.M. outsold Nirvana in the 90's. Good observation, you're right, 90's videos suddenly involved other people other than the band, a little more, a lot more, I never noticed that. I watched a lot more 90's music videos than 80's videos, we didn't have cable in the 80's. And if you didn't have cable, your only option was a show called "Friday Night Videos". There are still 80's videos that I watch that I've never seen before, and I know the song backwards and forwards. My main observation was that a lot of 90's videos were in black and white, and of course the 80's had their own very neon bright color palette.

That’s very true too! The color scheme was very different in the 90s from the 80s!

You know how many lives this song has saved in the last 30 years..including mine. Everyone has their own story. We all have a beginning..buts up to all of us to make that ending what u always wanted it to be...along the ride..it's gonna be a rough ride at times..but guess what .it makes us who we are. Don't ever give up..we get one chance at it..Make it happen.

Great reaction beautiful young lady, REM's music is always deep, thought provoking. In their early days, although the band was from Atlanta, their producer Mitch Easter had his studio in Winston-Salem, NC and this was the little bar called Ziggy's and they would sample new REM songs from Mitch. Such a pleasure it was to hear this song and others before they became well known. Later the Hootie and the Blowfish and the Dave Mattews Band came through there before their record deals, great times those were.
