I used to be a cashier and we had a woman who would hold up a line for half an hour if management didn't step in, expecting someone to take pity on her and pay for her stuff. She was never just buying groceries, it was groceries plus clothes and some knickknacks. I know, because I went through her purchases to weed out things she could put back until she could pay--and then she never came to my register again. She got several of the cashiers to cave and pay for it though, and sometimes customers behind her in line would cave. Cashiers don't really make that much money, so it always made me angry, and then she'd target them specifically the next week. Because now she knows who's generosity she can exploit.

Feeding the trolls. Do you know where the concept of this came from? Some old fairy story about a Troll guarding a bridge, and extracting payment from everyone who wanted to cross the bridge. Can't recall the precise ending, but even as a kid I thought "Just cross the darned river elsewhere (or have the villagers band together and build a different bridge), or put in a ferry, and the Troll will starve". Go around obstacles. People are part of the problem when someone evinces this kind of scamming habit. Actively enabling is idiotic. Any manager who encourages this by permitting that person to hold up the line by BEGGING should be sacked, because he/she is actually costing his/her store real money. Escort from the premises immediately, and ensure staff don't hand over their own hard earned cash too.

Oh I used to work as a cashier and we had one of those old ladies who tries to scam people into paying for her shopping. We couldn’t because the store didn’t let us carry our own money or cards but she was quite good at conning other shoppers. But unfortunately for her our checkout team is quite small and every new cashier was warned about her. Even our managers told us we could warn the other customers about her and her scamming very quickly dried up. She stopped coming pretty soon.

Nowadays most businesses don’t allow cashiers to do refunds. It’s a shame, really. At the grocery store I work at, our cashiers can’t issue refunds of any kind and can’t even void an item off an active order if it’s over $5. They have to call me or another manager every time. I get what you’re saying though. Even if he couldn’t do that, he could have called a manager. I know my petty ass would have gladly undone the entire order, then refused sale. Hehe

We had someone come in just this week with a refund on a coat and an item of jewellery. I made a mistake when I was processing it (we are only human after all) and called my boss. When she looked at the item of jewellery, it wasn’t from our shop, but had our barcode stuck to the back of it (the lady didn’t have a receipt for this item). The boss allowed an exchange for the jewellery and gave her a refund on the coat (receipt produced for that). The exchange item was only worth £1.50, but the customer still scammed us for that much.

Not as bad as OP's store but years ago I worked at a small shop. We would sometimes go for group dinners. With most of my friends we just split the bill, knowing it'll all work out in the end. One day you might pay a little more. Another day you may pay a little less. But this one woman made sure if her order was less expensive than the average, that we had to separate it out to the penny. Okay. Fair is fair. However, when she'd order a more expensive meal than the rest of us she would say lets just split it equally because it would be easier. None of us went broke but her annoying little game pretty much put an end to group dinners...at least the ones she was invited to.

About 8 years ago we had a team outing at a bar/grill and this one guy racked up a rather sizeable tab...and left without paying. I don't drink much in public (in private? weeeelllll...another tale for another time) so I was quite sober as things were winding down. Found out he'd left and his tab went unpaid, so I covered it. The very next day in the office at the kitchenette as we were getting our coffee in the morning, he jokingly says to me "Well look what the cat dragged in!" and I clapped back with "Well look who forgot to pay his bar tab yesterday!" He froze in place, his face going through the motions of confusion, contemplation, recollection, then horror. He pales and looks at me and is like "Holy shit I never paid...Oh my god!" and I'm like don't worry, I covered your bill. He settled up right then and there. So yeah, not everyone that steals is an asshole. Sometimes they're just too damn drunk to know what they're doing lol

Over a decade and a half ago my partner and I attended a semi-work bbq. Everyone either worked at the same company or had worked there previously. It was at a restaurant, but not a terribly expensive one, and some in the group ordered considerably more than others. I'd been enjoying the beer and conversation and wasn't paying attention to the whole group and as we wound down the bill arrived and someone suggested we split the bill equally. I was ok with that, but my partner objected and with a couple of quick looks had a few other people objecting as well. I wasn't drunk, but she was stone-cold sober. Anyway, we walked away paying for the three plates and less than ten drinks we'd had over three hours. Afterward she listed exactly how much the guy who'd suggested the even split had ordered. On his own he had ordered more than three times as much as we had as a couple and his mate was over twice. No other single person there came close to consuming what they had

The first story reminds me of an old friend my husband and I cut off. I want to say first that this "friend" made almost twice as much money as my husband and I put together. He would always talk about wanting to go out. The first two times we went out with him we said that we all pay our own tabs at the bar. He would slowly drink maybe 3 beers within 4 hours of time. Then we went out with him a few times more times and always got stuck with the bill. He bought us breakfast one day and the total bill was $35 with tip. My husband was trying to be nice and offered to pay the tab at the bar the next day. I watched this guy lush down 9 beers and 3 shots within 2 hours when it was our tab. My husband can put them down when at the bar and he couldn't even try to keep up. Needless to say, after 4 hours of being there our tap was $200 plus tip. I was not happy! Then we went out with him a couple more times and he always used the excuse that he forgot his wallet or he'd get us next time. The last time we ever went anywhere with him was terrible. My husband told him to make sure and have his wallet because we aren't buying. When the bill came he said that he forgot his wallet in the car and he'd be right back. I looked at my phone for the time when he left. My husband and I sat there for 45 minutes while he stayed outside the whole time. I got so mad that I asked the waitress to split our bill and have his separated. Once we paid our bill, we walked out (55 minutes later now) and the loser was still outside having a cigarette. We told him that he better get in there and pay his tab before they call the police on him and we left. Never talked to him again. It's terrible to be a mooch but when you have tons of money and no kids you are a special kind of AH to mooch off a couple that does have kids and struggle to go out a do anything after the bills are paid.

These people can't bear to live with uncertainty, so they instead prefer to believe whatever lie gets fed to them over telegram, some website or trash TV like fox. Because real science is messy, constantly evolving, dealing with apparently contradictory tidbits of information ... and most people never learned to figure out something on their own with no helpful teacher behind their back confirming something as correct as soon as they get it right, so they have no f*ing idea how hard it is to establish a ground truth. And since they don't want to live with ambiguity and "I don't know", they instead chose to believe whatever the person in their tribe says. This isn't them being taught to act like that. @@brag0001 I have met people who litterally got beat up because someone said they were sexist, racist, rapist, etc. Fun fact, this can cost someone a carreer even falsely accused. I also remember a BLM movement in my home town that a white bylaw officer arrested a seemingly random black guy and the movement demanded that all (Canadian) cops are retained because they are all racist, profiling and everything without once asking why (else they would have found the public info that the individual had a warrent out for skipping bail on a trafficking charge). And to prove this isn't new, assure from all the linchings in USA, there was a man named Samuel Mudd who in 1865 was falsely accused of assassinating President Lincoln. Even after not only proving without a shadow of a doubt that he was on the other side of town working at the time, AND THE MURDERER BEING CAUGHT, his name was tarnished so much that he had to flee and change his name, giving rise to the saying "His name is Mudd". We say blood is thicker than water and that family must stick together, using this as an excuse to defend rapists and thieves cause they are family... People jump onto full swing defending "minorities" to the point that they allow the oppressed to oppress (by proof of "fixing the white washing in anime", then claiming "black face" when a darker skinned individual is drawn... when it is a genre of animations about Asians living in their Asian country where there is not much reference to pick up on with foreign races.) The long-short of what I have observed is that we tend to jump on the first opinion we are given without asking what the other side of the story is. We see things as black and white when we live in a world of grey and thus believe that, because one thing is bad, the opposite must be good. Else if we were made to critically think (as people who love Science claim to do), then OP's coworkers would not seek to find their opinions before asking OP what his side is and judging from there. Sadly, it is also a fault of my own, but one I work hard to correct...

He tearfully told her to take the coffee and cooking oil off his bill. I could see that he was upset so I told the cashier to ring up those things with my stuff and let him take it. He'd ask for money to get you something, so you give him $5 go get some chips or something. He would intentionally get something he knows you don't like and then say "Oh that's too bad. A friend of mine stopped smoking for an entire year. He became an aggressive anti-smoker and constantly harassed his brother over him smoking. After a year he started smoking again. a friend of mine is really into mixology too, he makes great drinks and has spirits in the same price range as op in the 3rd story. I bet karen wouldn't even be able to taste the difference between a good cheep and an average spirit, so, it's just entitlement. Not to talk about not bringing anything to a neighborhood party

I've only been to one of those large neighborhood bbqs once in my life, and we didn't live there, we got invited by my dad's boss, who loved his sense of humour and work ethic. Anyway, we were told we didn't have to bring anything, but we STILL brought my families famous gingerbread. People who go to potluck/bbqs and just mooch the whole way confuse me.

Story 1: OP could have said "Sure, I'll get it" but before handing the food over to mooch "The food is free but the delivery charge is $$$" (total of the food cost)...or OP can take it home :) Story 2: If OP had the receipt then... Story 3: Auntie is an anti-Karen device! Nice one! Story 4: Her kid was 4 years underage so essentially Karen did the equivalent of giving her car to a 12 year old to go drive. Story 5: The owner should have told the police that he wanted to press charges on the Karen...she committed blackmail and/or extortion...either way it's a felony...or two.

For story 4 I would have asked if they'd be okay with giving the kid one just to help teach responsible drinking. But wouldn't have pressed any further if they said no. Learning to drink responsibly should be taught at younger ages, NOT at 21.

I used to work with a lady who occasionally got her lunch paid for by total strangers. She would go to a small cafe and order lunch, then find that she'd left her purse at home. She was an older woman and looked slightly ditzy so a young man would alway6 come to her rescue and pay for her lunch. At least she didn't make a habit of doing it.

Hold the phone some other people agreed it wasn’t worth getting him in trouble over?! He accused OP of creating a hostile work environment and they think he did something wrong explaining his actions by telling the truth? Who the heck are these people?! OP was put into trouble by him for not buying him free food and was even generous enough to buy pick him up something if he pays for it. That is much worse then “narcing” because the charges are false. The only way to get out of trouble was to tell the boss what really happened. That’s not narcing, that’s setting the record straight!

First story...OP should definitely not feel bad about outing that mooch. My own son did that to me...more than once! He invited me to lunch and when it came time to pay, oops, he forgot his wallet, or didn't have enough money on him. After falling for that a couple of times, the next time he invited me to lunch, I asked him if he had the money, because I wasn't paying again. He was pissed, but paid.

Story 4: Hurray for OP! Assertively but not aggressively stating he will call the police and press charges if Karen misbehaves again. That’s what everyone should do! APC - Always Press Charges! Story 5: Falsely accusing someone of a crime is slander per se. OP should sue not just for the money (in slander per se damages are presumed), but to start a paper trail on the woman to use as evidence related to other problems she causes.

I used to be a cashier and I can confirm that I dealt with entitled crap like number two CONSTANTLY, sometimes they would literally just dump their change (uncounted of course) on to the moving conveyer and expect me to not only somehow keep the conveyer from eating it but also to just count it all for them, and they had cash too, they just wanted to get rid of their change and were two cheap to use the coinstar. I also got the people coming up with overflowing $300+ dollar carts full of stuff and trying to pay for it with a $20 bill, then sitting there wanting to void stuff off one by one, of course starting with the 20 cent packets of koolaid then wanting the new total as if that somehow made a difference, I could go on…

I was actually a recipient of the kindness of a fellow shopper recently. I didn't realize I had left my wallet at home until I went to pay for my $30 of groceries I had grabbed on my way home from work. I sheepishly called over the employee watching the self checkouts and explained that I had forgotten my wallet. When she asked me if I wanted her to hold them while I went to get it I explained that I don't drive and instead walk everywhere so she should just have them restocked and I would come back another day. The nice customer nearby offered to pay for them, and at first I tried to refuse but she insisted so I thanked her and wished her well. The idea that some people think nothing of taking advantage of good people like her pisses me off. The old lady in story 2 needs to be banned from the store. She openly admitted to not only not being a paying customer, but outright leeching off of actual paying customers.

All of these Karen stories must be getting to me, last night I dreamed that we had a birthday party for my daughter at a indoor games venue, the cake was left on our reserved table while we played the games . When we returned we found that the cake box had been opened, the people at a nearby table had giant slabs of it and the entire cake had the icing scraped off. Apparently I don’t take this crap, confronting the woman who tried getting into my face. Tackled her down and was snapping photos so I had evidence when I woke.

I had a "friend" in college, Steve, who used to follow me down the cafeteria line. We had meal tickets, and each ticket, you get 7 items.
