@@TheDgdimicksorry, I beg to differ. While I was a military spouse, I was employed at one of the military banking facilities. I can’t tell you how many times I saw spouses “wearing” their sponsor’s rank, including O6’s. They were less common, but they still existed. Nine times out of ten, they were second or third spouses rolling into the rank instead of growing into it with their spouse. I waited on the wife of an O5 who pulled that “don’t you know who I am“ bit because she didn’t to show her ID. The general in line behind her tapped her shoulder and said “show the lady your ID before I call your husband”. There are all sorts who make it to high rank, and sometimes their wives’ heads swell a bit too much.

@@TheDgdimickJust because you've never heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I knew a major's wife when I was enlisted who thought that she crapped gold bricks. She was a nightmare. She treated anyone who was enlisted like they were nonentities at best or like dirt on the bottom of her shoes at worst. No one like dealing with her. The standing threat of her getting us demoted, extra duty or having pay taken away were her go-to threats whenever we wouldn't bow down to her and kiss her ample back side. It wasn't until she tried to pull that power play with another officer's wife when finally something was done about it.

I remember this from my days in the navy. At sick call a woman came in and demanded immediate attention. The personnel tried to explain that the que was by the seriousness of the illness. When she tried to pull her husband's rank to jump the line for something very minor. Unfortunately for her one of the women waiting her turn was the base commander's wife. She then pulled her husband's rank and position right back. She stated that she would be next to last with the Karen following her. The story was all over the base the next day. And it wasn't a small base. I was there and saw it all first hand. I was a base driver and supplying transport to a patent.

@@francit4856 Good military spouses know how to support their spouses' careers. At the very least, don't flash rank. Much better, be of service to the military community. For nearly everyone involved, military service is disruptive and stressful, and working to be helpful both alleviates your own stress and makes the whole facility work better. That actually works for the rest of society too - it's just more intense with military.

I’ve had two minor IDWHL moments which were not Kareny enough for Reddit but amused me at the time so I thought I would share. Firstly, in the UK we have a nationwide chain of convenience stores called The Co-op. Their staff often wear grey fleeces. I have a grey fleece but it is completely different in style. Theirs is thicker and quilted. A couple of times I have been mistaken for an employee but this one time, I was in a store that was not my local one. A woman asked me where something was and I replied that I had no idea. She said “Don’t you work here”and I say no. She said that maybe I should wear a different jacket so people don’t get confused. I tried to quip back that does she expect me to carry a selection of shirts and jackets when I go shopping so I can change in the car park before I go into each shop. However, I must have sounded brusquer than I intended because she looked absolutely shocked. This caused me to have a fit of giggles which was infectious and she started giggling too. I flagged down an employee and we went on our merry way.

The second story was when I actually did work in retail for a large UK supermarket who’s motto is Every Little Helps (though many believe that the initial letter E is superfluous). My store was in a small town outside Chesterfield, England and I could often be seen manning the self service checkouts. It was my day off and I went to the larger store in Chesterfield itself to get some bits. I went into the self service area and was scanning my goods when a lady in the next lane turned to me and said “Excuse me” (in a polite manner). I turned to her and she looked at me and clocked that I wan’t in uniform. She looked half confused and half embarrassed. I told her not to worry and said that she’s probably seen me in the Clay Cross store. Recognition then dawned and we laughed. Sadly, I didn’t see her again and I resigned soon after.

Story #1 - Any Karen grabs my wrist and tries to drag me is taking a trip to the ER. Story #3 - That Colonel is basically out of the Air Force. The demotion means he got an Article 15, which is a career killer for an officer or even a senior NCO. He was probably asked to resign his commission shortly after being reassigned. Way to go, Karen; you're now the wife of a civilian.

In my country, that O6 would have been demoted back to private, stripped of everything and be given a dishonorable discharge. His wife would do time in the can + BIG fine and have to pay back all damaged goods from the store. Husband would also have big fine for lyoing to the cops/security/mp's. And maybe even little jailtime himself.

@@Some_Guy6 In the US services the lowest rank an officer can be is O-1; second lieutenant in the Army, Marines, and Air/Space Force, and ensign in the Navy and Coast Guard. An officer can't be demoted into the enlisted ranks regardless of what he does. I'm almost certain he received an honorable discharge. In order to be dishonorably discharged you'd have to be court-martialed and convicted on some pretty serious charges. Serious enough that they'd include a prison sentence before the DD.

@@AngelaVEdwards Some of that is just the way the human brain works. About 30 years ago I worked in a convenience store we were renovating. We had put a sign on the front door saying we were closed and why, and covered the doors with newspaper. We had to leave the doors unlocked for safety reasons and because we had to keep going in and out. People still kept coming in. They claimed they didn't see the sign or newspaper, that it blended in with all the other signage on the front (soda, cigarettes, drinks, etc). We turned the closed sign upside down. That actually stopped 99% of the people from coming in, because with it upside down, it was different enough from the rest of the signs then, that people stopped to actually read what it said. With it right-side up, it blended in too much.

Big orange home improvement store story: Well it's been awhile since I've been there since I have two big blue home improvement stores that are closer to me. But the last time I checked, big orange's uniform was an orange bib apron with their logo on it. PX story: For those not in the know, an O6 actually is a high-ranking officer, just a step below the Admiral and General ranks. In the Navy or Coast Guard it's a Captain. In the Army, Marines, Air Force and Space Force it's a full-bird Colonel. You would think by the time someone actually reaches that rank they would know better than to pull that type of BS! And being dropped two ranks to an O-4 (Navy Lt. Cmdr., Army Major) is a huge demotion and blow to the career path and paycheck. It works in stupid situations, too. A friend of mine, A, a nurse, joined the Medical Corps and was sent to a training base in Canada, with his wife, also a nurse ( but a civilian!). His wife discovered that the Base Commandant's wife was a close friend from school, so of course got together with her. So a Sergeant visits Private A, and says "Your wife is friendly with the Commandant's wife" "Yes, says Pte A, "They are old friends from school" "Not any more, they aren't" says Sergeant. "I'm not going to tell my wife she can't talk to her bestie", says Pte A. Then in walks the Sergeant Major... Long story short, it rose up and up, until it got to A's Commanding Officer, and A still insisted that his wife had every right to talk to an old friend, and was nothing to do with the Army. Even the Base Commandant's wife was defending her right to have chats with her old friend... So Pte A was busted out of the Army.

I'd respond similarly if threatened with jail: "I have nothing to lose, so, yes, Karen, PLEASE have the police take me there again!" Although, I'll probably never be confused for an employee thankfully. I do kind of feel like I'd be liable to have a day when I'm yelled at for doing drugs/being intoxicated (due to wearing prescription sunglasses for light sensitivity I was born with, as well as speech problems and certain mental things at times), harming myself for attention (due to volunteering at the local Animal Control and getting scratched by claws on occasion) when in public by a judgemental Karen with nothing better to do, though. I hope that never happens either, and for their sake, they should probably also hope it never happens, especially if they want to try getting physical.
