We feel the same brother... And it is not only this game. Without access to POKEs you were pretty much f..d as a kid in the 80s. The games were 1000x harder than today.

I was given a 48k in 1992. When I got R Type I did the honourable thing - I bought a Multiface ....... It was worth it - my index finger is still working, and I finished the game !

I think it says something that I didn't even consider this a particularly hard game by Sepctrum standards - I could get to about level 4 I think. Whichever is the one after the giant spaceship.

I agree on masterclass programming. Bob Pape used the hardware abilities of the ZX Spectrum to achieve spectacular effects. Basically, this is a character-based (8*8 pixel grid) game. In order to conceal this, the background scrolls pixel by pixel (redefined characters, I presume). Thus the Speccy doesn't have to shovel around large chunks of pixels on screen. It is sufficient to deal with character-size elements. This technique frees a lot of CPU cycles to power the game. There is even time for beeper sound effects - and on the ZX Spectrum with 48 kB the beeper in operation means that the CPU cannot do anything else but generate sound.

This port is the reason why I'm so interested on the ZX Spectrum. A clear example of the fascinating things you can do with such limited hardware

I think the limitations made the spectrum game the best version. The fact that the sprites move 8 pixels at a time to avoid colour clash and if you played it properly (q,a,o,p and space) you could get sections where positional accuracy was crucial that I found created a better gaming experience than the arcade version. But then I didn't play the arcade version nearly as much!

Bob Pape has to be easily one of the best Spectrum programmers of all time. Great work as always by Mark Jones on graphics too. This is easily one of, if not the best arcade conversions on the Spectrum, they were usually pretty awful.

Probably, but there are several other good programmers on zx-spectrum: David Perry, Joffa Smith, Mike Lamb, Jon Ritman, Dave Thompson, Dominic Robinson, David Shea, Rafaelle Cecco, John M. Phillips, etc... Good arcade conversions on speccy: Rainbow Islands, Ikari Warriors, Renegade, Arkanoid, Arkanoid Revenge of Doh, Green Beret, Terra Cresta, Flying Shark, Cabal

But how do we compare this game to Zynaps and later-released Zybex? To be honest, I love all three. And all three are great in their Spectrum renditions.
@sl9sl9
@sl9sl9 5 жыл бұрын
Zynaps looks and sounds great and plays great too, with near perfect smoothness at all times. Zybex looks worse than the others and lags a lot every time an audio explosion plays. R-Type is just in a different league, it has all the massive bosses from the arcade, gorgeous levels and variety that elevates it beyond everything else. There is just no contest IMO.

Thanks to ppl for pointing out the author of this masterpiece wrote a book, what an excellent thing to do, I've been reading it today so exciting to me as it's been a real long time now since I coded a game. Reading about it and watching this playthrough this looks like a very smart piece of work. I've programmed lots of 6502 and x86 but very little z80. Now I've got to make a game for the zxspectrum, start by writing a z80 assembler while absorbing Zaks book. I revisited the 81 a few times and that thing was fun last time I did write a z80 disassembler in UNIX shell script. Yes, this is a most lavish inspiration thanks and greetz

Nobody could imagine the buzz of this masterpiece, from today's perspective - the average birthday card has better graphics and infinitely better sound ! I'm in the stupid position of having bought and built one of the first ZX81s off the production line, but not getting a Spectrum till 1992, as it was in its death throes. I seem to be locked in a bit of a time warp, because I just can't get past this game .....

It's crazy that somehow the Spectrum can show all of this onscreen with no sprite flicker (I know it doesn't even use sprites), and from what I can tell there's not really any obvious slowdown either. In many ways this is actually more impressive than even the SNES version of Super R-Type that was created generations later on much more powerful and sophisticated hardware.

The best space shooter on the ZX-SPECTRUM! Respect to programmers!

I soldered an Atari-style Gamepad port to my Didaktik M Keyboard, which was a matrix of switches to play the game with a gamepad. The original R-Type on Spectrum did not support any type of Joystick, which my computer had. Both Kemston and Sinclair Joystick port. Just redefinable keys. So you had to redefine keys for the mapping on the gamepad from Atari. It plays wonderful like that! Really responsive and I made it through levels easily.

A very good adaptation of the game, for zx at that time it was a miracle! Of course there is no background music, but there are very beautiful sprites, the style for this beautiful PC, the ZX has very good and correct colors, the C-64 has bad colors, but very cool SID music! Porting by 200% is very good for this hardware at that time!

When people write about how it's a masterclass in programming - they undersell it. Unlike (almost) every other 8 bit computer or console out there - ZX Spectrum was not made to have games. In fact all it could do is 'text mode'. No sprites. So all the graphics you see - it's basically devs modifying the stock font. Literally. Every 8x8 space is basically a letter. And as far as ZX Spectrum is concerned - it simply fills the screen with text. I'd add "every frame" - but Speccy doesn't even have a concept of frames.

It was very strange that such a brilliant game never got a sound enhancement for the AY chip of the ZX Spectrum 128. The 128 kB versions of the ZX Spectrum appeared in 1985 and R-Type's conversion to the Speccy happened 1988 when the 128 kB models had been the new standard Spectrum versions for something like 3 years.
@gwishart

@@seraphinberktold7087 Bob Pape (the programmer) explains this in his book, "It's Behind You". Basically, he'd been told by his boss that a musician would be providing in-game music and sound effects, so Pape left space for the data and ensured there were enough spare clock-cycles to have an interrupt driven music routine running in the background. Shortly before the game was due to go for mastering, his boss told him that there was no musician and that Pape was responsible for all the music and sound effects. It's the same reason the Amstrad CPC version is also music-less: just after the Spectrum version went for mastering - in mid-September, Keith Goodyer was handed the Spectrum code and graphics and told the CPC version was being released in November, so he had only 21 days to write the entire game.
