The most important part of an engine out landing is to land near vertical with enough inertia in the rotor system to execute a controlled touchdown. On dirt or grass or open fields or confined areas vertical is important.

I see what you mean but from what I understand, autorotation performance (depending on the aircraft of course) is best with a good bit of forward airspeed. You can do near vertical autorotations but your decent rate is going to be higher meaning you need to pull more up collective in the flare, the more forward airspeed you’ve got, the more forgiving the aircraft will be in the flair. But if you’ve got a tight spot you’re trying to set her down in that doesn’t have the room for you to come in with much forward airspeed then you gotta come down as vertical as possible to get it in so that’s a good scenario for a vertical decent.

Any body remember that working on a chopper in Nam, even if you just put in one bolt. you HAD to take the test flight and the pilot alwys finished with an auto- rotation.

Boy this brings back memories of going to helicopter school at Silver state helicopters at Long Beach Airport. At least I got my private before they went belly up stealing everyone’s money.

Nice job, make sure you have the throttle all the way into the detent then you won’t get that yaw when you level off and raise collective.

Great job! But when attempting these CFIT maneuvers, ALWAYS prepare for the unexpected. With this in mind NO Shorts or Short Sleeve Shirts. Like the IP, ONLY NOMEX CLOTHING, GLOVES, HELMET AND HIGH SUPPORT FOOTWEAR. Remember AR is a Controlled Flight Into Terrain. Things can and do go wrong. Prepare for the worst, Plan for the best. Nice job from I'm estimating at 500'. A former LEO Pilot.

Very common from why I have seen for them to where a flight suite. I think it is partly based on the lack of secure storage inside a helicopter.

The maneuver is called Autorotation. If pilot lost engine power, using the centrifugal force of the rotating assembly can slowly bring the heli down using reverse thrust on the blades. The engine fails, pilot lowers the collective which is the device that changes the pitch on the blades, alllows the rpm of the rotors to stay higher and the heli basically screws down through the air and then the pilot pulls the cyclic and collective to flare at the end causing the heli to tilt back slowing it down dramatically just before touch down. Autorotation is something every pilot trains for. Helicopters can be much safer than fixed wing in the event of a failure. Provided it’s flown by a properly trained pilot.

It's because of that helicopter that the pilot was able to walk away from that incident. Fixed-wing aircraft don't have the convenience of auto rotate which is basically like a helicopters built-in parachute because as long as the rotors continue to spin and create lift to get them safely to the ground whereas fixed-wing have to maintain forward momentum helicopters on the other hand fall straight down with the rotor spinning creating enough lift to land safely

@@gustavohenriquefauth8920 planes need to touch down at a much higher airspeed or else they stall meaning they need a long place to land. Where I fly I would not want to be in a fixed wing because it’s so pupulated there would be nowhere for them to land. I on the other hand could put it into a 20’x20’ spot pretty comfy
