R52 / R57 Mini Cooper rear window lifter repair on convertible JCW. My John Cooper Works Mini Cooper Convertible is a real blast to drive... until the little things break. The mini cooper rear window regulator has broken for me three times. Twice on one side, once on the other.
*** Update 9/27/21 now 4 times!!!! $#!+ this is poor design!!!
I figured if it has been such a problem for me, it's a problem for you too. There is a little plastic part that holds the cables together that breaks. Save your money, do the fix in a couple hours. It's not that bad and only needs simple tools. You can do it!!! Please post in comments if you needed to fix a mini cooper rear window lifter too! (Even if you had it done in a mini dealership.)

I wrestled getting the window regulator back in as you expected. I finally figured out the secret to making it easier. You were on the right track lowering the window. To make it easier, lower it about a third of the way so that the max width at any point is smaller. Great video thanks!

Thanks for all the small details on how to do this. I followed the majority of your steps & watched John H do the same without taking the whole back seats out (just the bottom portion) & not removing the whole panel or seatbelts. Not as thorough as your video but still helpful. My cable was pretty jammed in there preventing it from sliding up or down, so I cut it. Overall fought with it as you said but got it out, replaced the cable & plastic piece that broke & put it back together. Thanks again.

Thanks so much for such a thorough video. Thieves smashed my wife's F57 rear window and I think I'm going to save $500 replacing it myself in the comfort of my own garage. Watching the video, they look substantially similar. Might as well learn it for when the regulators start failing out of warranty. :)

Just did this repair today. Your detail on the round cable take-up wheel let me know that I had the wrong side in the kit I bought on Amazon. I was doing the left rear, but my wheel was for the right rear. Thankfully, the original one was still good, so just reused it. The broken part was the same one you showed here. Thank you for this video!

Greetings from Australia. What a fantastic video, documenting all the steps really well and nicely put together. I’ve only had my R52 two months when the regulator jammed up. Ordered the part (which unfortunately isn’t cheap) and just put it in today. Followed your video and found it pretty simple, it was even on the same side (right side, driver’s side here in Australia). I’m just sorry you’ve had to do this three times.

Just followed your video to change my regulator in ‘07 RR52. Only addition to add was that my o-ring from the window motor to the regulator got chewed by cable. Got replace o-ring at Ace Hardware. Now I can finally drop the top after 6 months. Again, great job on your video😁

Congrats on your repair. I agree about not getting to drop the top. Because of that, I would rarely drive the car. Too hot to fix it in the blazing sun, drive my other car. I swear I put about 6,000 miles on this car in 6 years because of top cables and window regulators. Diy saved thousands!!! Such a ripoff with these crappy plastics breaking down.

Great job, the fancy tool is called a spanner wrench, which works great on all the windows. Be sure to lubricate with white lithium grease to prolong the life of the cables

Thanks for such a detailed instructions. Just today I had those small windows halfway open and suddenly while driving I heard a clonk and saw that the driver side window had dropped all the way to the bottom. Now I need to follow your instructions to see what really happened and how to fix it.

Set aside a day to do it. There are a few real annoying parts. Taking out the back seats from the middle is a pain.

@@robdude1969 Actually already I took it apart right after posting my previous comment and saw that the plastic clip was broken just like in your video. No major problems doing the disassembly even the 10 mm bolt between the seats was easy to remove when back seats were folded down. Just for curiosity I also called local Mini dealer and they quoted $1200 if both regulator and motor need to be replaced and $1000 if just one of them is broken. I ordered something called "Rear Quarter Window Regulator Set 51377111017 for Mini One R52 R57 Convertible" from eBay for $17 including shipping to SoCal thus this turned out to be a really cheap DIY project. Thanks again for a great video.

@@robdude1969 On mine one of the plastic pulleys was broken, so the typical white plastic part hadn't failed, and the wires were damaged, too, so I ended up needing the whole assembly, unlike most people, apparently.

I remember doing this repair, not the most fun job. Lots of feeling around and skinned knuckles. Take breaks, grab a beer, be patient. Dont plan on driving the car to work the next day in case things go wrong, but you CAN do this!

VERY helpful step-by-step guide. Doing this job now and removed everything out successfully (just need wait for the regulator to arrive in the mail!). > ... I had difficulty removing the rear seat base. It's much easier if you remove the four plastic kid/baby seat plugs from the seat base before trying to pull it out.

that rear upper seat middle bolt was a huge pain in the butt on mine. I'm glad your stuff all came out easy enough.

Just performed this on R52 2007 Sidewalk. At 3:00, there are 3 snaps into the door frame that should be pulled out first. 4:45 remove the plastic snap that holds the wires for the motor. I attempted to fix the regulator myself using new 1/16th wire rope but noticed the motor housing loosen to the point where the wire would skip the spool. To best reinstall the regulator, put in with window fully out, once post is cleared bring in slowly then align bottom post first, followed by left then right (if working Right rear (US Passenger) window). Other than failing to repair my window regular and having to buy one I was very pleased with this video, I assumed I saved $300+ in labor if I took it to local mechanic, probably $600 if I took it to dealership. Oh my god I did it! Amazing! It was perfect... aaaand it broke again after 3 days. Whyyy god whyyyy? Someone told me you have to lubricate the moving parts. I ordered another replacement kit and I’m gonna try again. If anyone know why this would happen again after fixing lmk. Ugh. Thank god for this video though.

Thank you. Your guide was helpful. I have a question though. I had to replace the blue cable spool that guides the cable at the top of the window. As you mentioned in your video, I had to hammer it in. I could not find any video on how to do this exactly, so, I hammered away and eventually got it into place. It is not a smooth fit and I’m worried it will fail. Do you have any info on how I should have hammered the thing into place?

Did I talk about that? If it has friction, it will wear. If it has too much friction and binds, it will fail. So long as it is held in place and spins freely, you should be fine. Good luck!!

@@robdude1969 haven’t gotten the parts yet but the small window was stuck all the way down and couldn’t be brought up. I was afraid of people breaking in or getting rained on. I followed these instructions and worked like a charm! The window is now up. I’ll have to order the parts and truly fix it in a week or two when I find the parts. I am 100% confident I can fix it now by using this video

They suck. I hated that part a lot. The center catch has a 10mm bolt that holds the middles in place. A lock of sorts. Remove the bolt and throw it away. Pure evil.

Super super helpful! Thanks so much. Also, you can buy a regulator repair kit on eBay for $50 which is also really easy to replace instead of buying a whole new regulator for $200+. Also saves the hassle of re-aligning the window.

I can’t get the window out of the vehicle… removed the motor - it seems like the lower regulator is jammed and won’t let the window move up the track… so frustrating! Any thoughts?

See if you can undo the window from the track or release the motor. It’s a real pain if you cannot movie it up and down to get out easily. Good luck!

You are gonna need to open it manually. There is a manual release.

Some partial notes from an F57: the rear 10mm is a gigantic pain to access. EDIT: no it's not. You just have to remove four top-side torx bolts, then the top bracket. I'm not always that dumb. Other random F57 notes: access to the lower capture bolt was blocked by an amplifier on my wife's S with standard stereo. The front of the panel had 3 push pins, the rear had (I think) 1. The seats come out easily after you break the plastic trim (it's cheap and you'll do better next time) in the middle to expose the 10mm bolt that captures the hinges. I pulled the driver's door sill trim. The rear push pins capture some cheap fiber interior trim AND the panel, so they still have to come out even though they look like they might not.

that's another problem. I had it too... maybe switch in trunk not engaged all the way. you may need to manually crank it, maybe your cables are jacked up, maybe motor, not sure, but search up mini convertible top repair. I wish I could help you more. good luck!!

I have had both sides go out. Can you move them manually? Did you ever hear a pop during top or window use? There is a stupid little plastic piece that was designed to fail. I am sure of this insures service for life.... I hate planned obsolescence. We need CLASS ACTION!!!

@@robdude1969 thanks. Looks like I have take out the Windows to properly diagnose the issue. Initially I could move them manually, but no longer. One is open, the other closed. Glad temperature is reasonable.

@@patrickdreiding3342 oh man, first time I had to do this in blistering heat. second time was ok... third time was the worst. I hated this car for this BS and Top BS too... the part took three weeks, then it was Hot again... I didn't drive it for a few months. All working now... it's a blast to drive when it works right. Good luck. If they aren't moving, they are probably bound up with those cables in a rat nest.

@@robdude1969 You are amazing! With help from the video and the service manual I was able to get both windows out. Biggest issue was pulling out the unit with the window down. I had to remove the motor to loosen the cables so I could lift the window on the frame and then pull the whole unit out. Do you know where I can purchase replacement cables, etc.? I took pictures but could not upload.

yeah, getting it back in is a pain too... careful if you have tint!!! I have links on the description, they may be useful. Crappy thing - My mini has 41000 miles on it. 10 years or 40,000 miles... dammit. good luck! so happy for your successes!

You can buy the wire part for $47.00, no need for whole part if your motor is good,,

I just found a kit on ebay that just replaces the cables and wheels instead of the whole regulator

Someone needs to make a metal piece instead of plastic piece unless it's a weak link on purpose so it doesn't damage a more expensive piece 🤔

Ugh. That pin on the bottom where the speaker is! I can’t get the thing out because the window is down too. I stopped for a beer. Maybe that’ll help

If you take off the motor and slide the window up on the track a bit it may help. Be sure not to unbolt those three lifter mounting nuts all the way, just loosen them. The bottom one (I think the one you are mad at) broke on mine and I had to do this job again recently. This effing car!!! Cheers. Good luck it’s just a puzzle to test your patience.

@@robdude1969 I think in the video where you put back the module, after that you didn't do that mounting bolt at the very bottom though.

Great catch. When we made this video, the replacement part I got was with a loose stud. I chose not to show it in the video because it was a huge pain. I left it. Unfortunately I had to do this again to address this issue since it rattled after a couple months. Fourth time is a charm as they say.

@@robdude1969 have you got the actually video in how to replace the wire module and that plastic that broke? I found it in some other channel but best if u have this part to show as well
