►Oil needs to remain on the inside of the engine to do its job efficiently. Any leak reduces the oil level and can allow foreign contaminants to enter, neither of which is remotely good for engine health. An oil leak around the oil pan is one of the most critical places it can occur, with literally all of the oil passing by it as the engine runs. Removing the pan to fix the leak is your only option.
Removing the oil pan to apply a new bead of sealant is a relatively easy job on an R56 MINI. Only an exhaust pipe must be removed before there's complete access to the oil pan. From there, you'll need to remove a few bolts. However, ensure the oil pan is clean before applying a new bead of sealant; failing to do so will likely cause another leak to form quickly.

Permatex makes a foam gasket remover that does a good job on the VW/Audi gasket sealant.

Thanks for posting this. I'm about to replace the oil pan on my 1999 Audi A6 C5, which has leaked both times I replaced it after it got a nail in it in a parking lot. (I'm jealous to see an oil pan that isn't the lowest ground clearance point!) The last time I replaced it (for a crack), it was okay. The early C5 A6 and Passat had both RTV and a metal gasket on engine code AHA. Starting in 2001 (or late 2000?) they switched to just the sealant on the ATQ engine that uses the same oil pan. Is there an actual change in the engine or did they just figure out that model year that metal gaskets are unnecessary?
